AOL Did It

The End of My AOL Website and Journals

I checked at 6:00 p.m. to see if AOL removed my website and my journals from the Internet. They did! Thus ends a season in my life.

Last Two Days

There is transcendent power in a strong intergenerational family. An effectively interdependent family of children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins can be a powerful force in helping people have a sense of who they are and where they came from and what they stand for. (Stephen R. Covey, Daily Reflections for Highly Effective People, October 29)

LAST TWO DAYS

Please be aware that on October 31st AOL will discontinue support for the genealogy website I have maintained on their service for many years. If there is something on the website that you'd like you should either print it or save a copy of the webpage file either today or tomorrow.

This blog, Henthorn Genelaogy News, is provided by Google. I'll continue to post here from time to time as I decide what I want to do next with my interest in genealogy.

Thanks again to everyone who shared information and support over the years.

Reminder

Photo: Corel

If you are interested in the information on my AOL genealogy website and you want to keep some of the information only a few more days remain to take action. On 31 October 2008 the website will be removed from the Internet by AOL. I haven't decided whether I will rebuild the website somewhere else. Therefore if you want something you should either print out the webpage or save the webpage on your own computer.

I did archived all of the pieces of the website on a thumb drive. While I was doing that work I noticed that the Monroe County, Ohio History page had 8,900 visits. I estimate that there were at least 27,000 visits made to my homepage during the life of the website. I estimate because around the time the counter reached 25,000 it was somehow reset to zero by AOL.

I've given some thought to whether I should restrict access to the information if I decide to make it available again on the Internet. Because of privacy concerns there is always a possiblity of offending someone if everyone on the Internet has access to the genealogy information. Access by "invitation only" could reduce or eliminate this issue. If you have an opinion about this I'd like to hear from you.

Henthorn Genealogy Website Downloaded

Yesterday I worked most of the day downloading all of the webpages I'd uploaded to my free AOL webspace. I put all of the files on a thumb drive that I bought for this purpose. Completing this project insured that I have a copy of everything on a device that I can move from one computer to another.

After my genealogy website is discontinued at the end of the month I will still be able to retrieve and share any of the information that someone might request. Also, I'll be able to put any of the files, I choose, back on the Internet should I decide that's something I want to do.

I've thought of one more project that I need to accomplish. There is a link from a Monroe County, Ohio webpage to a document that I've made available on my webspace for many years. That link will break at the end of the month. Today I'm trying to make contact with the person responsible for the page with the link. I'm not having much luck. I tried a couple of Email addresses and they were out of date.

Mr. Dickie's New Google Blogs

For a few months I have been keeping a personal journal (Mr. Dickie's Blog) on Google. I've been pleased with how the service works.
I announced earlier that AOL will discontinue Journal support on October 31, 2008. Google agreed to move AOL journals to their service. They created an easy procedure to facilitate the transfer.

I'm pleased to announce that I have successfully moved my three AOL journals to Google. As of October 21st I will no longer post new information to any of the AOL journals. Certain housekeeping tasks remain to be accomplished before the three new Google blogs will be configured to my satisfaction. Please be patient as I go through that process.

I'm thankful that Google was willing to support AOL users by providing support for our journals.

My four Google blogs are as follows:

The End

AOL recently announced that they will discontinue support of private websites, AOL Hometown, and journals as of 31 Oct 2008. This is probably another sign of the ultimate demise of AOL as an Internet powerhouse.

This announcement will impact me personally. For many years I have maintained the Henthorn Genealogy Website in free space provided by AOL. I've also been posting to my Arrow Prayers journal and several others. I estimate that there have been over 27,000 visits to the genealogy homepage since I added a visit counter.

I'll probably create an Arrow Prayers blog on Google. I don't plan to move any of the prayers from the AOL journal archive to the new blog.

I don't know what I will do about the genealogy information. I suggest that if there is anything you want you either print out the information or make a copy of the file on your own computer prior to October 31st.

I currently have a personal blog on Google. If you are interested in keeping track of what I am doing please read the blog postings from time to time. After October 31st this will be the best place to find out what I decided to do.

Mr. Dickie's Blog: http://mrdickiesblog.blogspot.com/

Thanks to everyone who shared information and encouragement during the years that AOL provided this service. I hope you found something of interest from time to time.

AOL Drops Website and Journal Support

The other day AOL sent an Email to all users announcing that as of 31 October 2008 the company will drop support of free websites and free journals. For a long time there had been rumors that AOL would take drastic steps in order to survive. In this writer's opinion this announcement indicates that the company is now in "survival mode."

For many years I have maintained a genealogy website in the free AOL website space. At the end of the month the website will no longer be available.

Needless to say I am very disappointed about this turn of events.

If there's anything on the website that you have put off printing or copying you should take steps to copy or print the information to your computer before the end of the month.

Creating this website took months, if not years. To illustrate the scoop of the problem, there are 129 postings to the Henthorn Website News alone.

At this time I am not certain whether I want to do the work required to move the information to the server of some other website provider. There's a strong possiblity that I will just accept what has happened as a sign that it is time for me to cease sharing genealogy information on the Internet via a personal website. There are other approaches that I'm going to think about.

To everyone who shared information or gave encouragement over the years I extend my thanks.

No News

I haven't posted any news since the middle of August.

I've also been neglectful about responding to Emails that some of you sent. At the present time I am not working on genealogy. It seems that my interest runs hot and then cold. I hope you find something of interest on the website.

At this time I will not be posting anything new to the website or this news blog. The earliest I might resume posting will be mid-October.

Good luck in your genealogy quest.

Thomas Cresap - Maryland Pioneer

Thomas Cresap Family Monument - Cumberland, Maryland
(Click on either image to see a larger and more legible version.)
Thomas Cresap
(b. 1694 ?; d. 1790)

A name that still strikes sparks in our imagininations is that of Thomas Cresap. With his air of daring, his boastfulness, his audacious swagger coupled with sheer courage, his colorful attitude and speeh, and a gift for finding his way despite any and all obstacles, he often reminds us of another English-born adventurer connected with Maryland: Captain John Smith.

Certainly, the family fort, househould, and trading post called "Oldtown," which he established and operated for many years, was one of the best-known place names in colonial America. Every traveler of any consequence knew about Cresap and Oldtown (known to many Indians as Opessa's Town). Located on the northern bank of the Potomac River, about 15 miles east of Cumberland, [Maryland], it was, for some ten years or more, looked upon as a sort of "Ultima Thule, or farthest west," in Maryland.

Cresap, a frequently-embattled rough-hewn frontiersman, and speculator, in a certain sense, was also an innkeeper --- but food and lodgings were free of charge to all who came. This was a custom of the time, especially in such a region where the usual inns and taverns were non-existent. On any one day, he might have as his guests one or two Moravian missionaries, on their way from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Virginia - and their Bethabara or Wachovia settlements in North Carolina (bent on converting Indians to Christianity); a government emissary on some important mission; perhaps even George Washington or Christopher Gist; three or four Indians, passing through; and one or two hunters, or trappers. Very likely, he enjoyed the "tall stories," and profited by the items of genuine frontier news, but was equally glad to find tourist traffic light on other days, considering his expense for food.

It is evident that Cresap had something further to gain from all this. He did considerable business with friendly Indians, trading European-style hardware and food items (flour, salt, gunpowder, weapons, bacon, hams, and so on) for furs. Increasingly, too, he bought and sold land, not omitting to solicit business from his Moravian churchly visitors. Here, we encounter an odd quirk of his nature. Though not religious, he looked upon their religious activities as a stabilizing influence. In addition, he respected them for their godly behavior and high principles.

As for Indian visitors, he welcomed friendly ones who might be customers; and he "put up" with others, showing whatever grace he could summon. (Often, there were war parties of the Six Nations, on their way to or from battles with their customary southern enemies, the Cherokees. These rather unwelcome guests --- who never bought real estate and seldom traded furs -- apparently reasoned that the colonists had driven away or killed their deer or other game, and that Cresap, therefore, should supply food to take its place. They regarded him as the only visible representative of a faraway "Great White Father" who had already broken one promise or another. Here, though not especially gifted as a diplomat, Cresap usually managed to "strike a deal.")

"Big Spoon," we are told, was the name usually given to him by Indians, descriptive of his apparently open-handed generosity in supplying them with food. As for Cresap, himself, the descriptions we have vary considerably, depending upon who said or wrote them. (See "Thomas Cresap, Maryland Frontiersman," by Kenneth P. Bailey.) William Trent, the Pennsylvania trader and Virginia military personage, was a prominent and fairly frequent quest at Oldtown. Andrew Montour, another respected individual (three-quarters Indian, and long noted as an interpreter and diplomat in Indian affairs) was Cresap's close friend. So was that courageous diplomat and Indian scout, George Croghan. It was from Cresap that George Washington learned much frontier lore, the two remaining friends until Cresap's death in 1790. (He was born in Yorkshire, England, probably about 1694, though he, himself, never was sure of the date).

On the other hand, a member of Braddock's expedition, described him thus.

"May 8th: Ferried over the River into Maryland ... there lives Colonel Cressop, A Rattle Snake Colonel, and a D---d Rascal ..."

No doubt, the title of "Rattle Snake Colonel" was intended to be derogatory, indicating that the military title was self-adopted rather than official.

By some, no doubt, Cresap was accused of "interfering in Indian affairs." He was not one to "go by the book." Yet, time and again, we read statements praising his hospitality, such as this one by two Moravians, visitors at Oldtown in 1749:

"... On October 31st, we passed no house for thirty-five miles, but indescribably high mountains. We started early ... and after passing safely through two creeks we came to Colonel Crissops at night, pretty well tired out. He received us very courteously ... Several other people were with him, a gentleman from Maryland and a servant from Virginia, to whom he gave all kind of good information about Bethlehem, and also about the conversion of the Indians... He also showed us on a map where the Six Nations live ..."

Extraordinary, indeed, was Cresap's ability to serve in the Maryland General Assembly, at Annapolis during part of one week, while being on hand the remainder of the week, as a sort of human "frontier listening post," at Oldtown.

It was in 1739 that a Pennsylvania captain, John Charlton, took out, from the Maryland government, a patent for 200 acres of land at a spot known as "Indian Seat." Cresap bought this on May 24, 1740 (for 100 pounds current money). With later land additions, it became known as Oldtown. From then on, he frequently acquired more land, selling whenever there was promise of a good profit.

From all this, we may certainly conclude that Thomas Cresap was just the right sort to have stationed along such Indian trails as Nemacolin's Path; one from whom news would be frequently forthcoming; and one who would seldom leave either friends or enemies in doubt.

Backup

For the time being I have more or less run out of topics to post in Henthorn Website News. Last week I got interested in Facebook and spent many hours learning about how that service works.

Today I thought I'd write something about backing up your genealogy files. What I'm going to say applies to what I should be doing myself. One thing I learned about personal computers over the years, they will fail. When they do it is never at a convenient time and it is never easy to fix the problem.

What would you do if your computer failed and you had to purchase a new one? Would your genealogy files be backed up? Would your old genealogy program work on your new computer operating system?

There are several ways you can backup your genealogy files. You can make an exact copy of the genealogy files with the Copy command. Or you can use the backup system of your genealogy program. And, finally, you can create a GEDCOM file. All three methods have advantages and disadvantages.

Making an exact copy of your genealogy file assumes that you will have a working copy of your genealogy program available after you recover from your computer failure. Making a backup copy with your genealogy program assumes that you will be able to install a copy of your old genealogy program on your new computer, if you have to buy one.

A GEDCOM file is a "text" file that can be read by all good genealogy programs. Having a backup file in this format makes it possible to load your backed up file into any genealogy program you chose, including perhaps a new version of your old genealogy program or some other genealogy program you might decide to purchase.

By the way, you might want to consider sharing a backup copy of your genealogy file(s) with someone else. I heard a story one time about a couple who had their genealogy on a laptop in their RV. The RV caught on fire with the laptop still inside the vehicle. Any backups were also in the RV. A disaster!

I urge you to give thought now, when things are going well, to how you would deal with a computer malfunction that impacts your genealogy. It will be time well spent.

Fielding Family of Utah

There is evidence that a branch of the Fielding Family from Lancashire, England emigrated to Utah and settled in the Salt Lake City area. This family links to the Henthorn family of England.

If you are a member of this family and interested in their history and genealogy I'd like very much to hear from you. I'd like to add more information about the Fielding family to my Henthorn's of England genealogy file.

If anyone has found information about this family online I'd appreciate getting the URL.

Thoughts About Sharing Genealogy

Photo: Mr. Dickie - Marantha

If you are thinking about sharing your genealogy on the Internet I think it is important to give thought, early on, to how you will display the information. Nowadays genealogy programs often can generate several different styles of webpages. Other add-on programs can read GEDCOM files to generate webpages. Some programs can create files in the popular PDF format.

In my opinion all of the options are not equally friendly to website visitors. Some create impressive displays of information that are nearly impossible to follow. Beware of chosing that option.

At this point my favorite way of sharing information on the web is to create a Register report, with an every name index in the PDF format. This method doesn't actually let the visitor view the information on the website. Rather, the file is downloaded to the visitor's computer and displayed or printed there. A Register report is easy to follow and the every name index helps the reader to quickly find a person of interest.

Brierly (Brierley) Family

Here's a HotLink to Brierly (Brierley) Family website. There's a connection to my Henthorn family from England. The Brierly family emigrated from the area of Lancashire, England to Worcester county, Massachusetts in the mid-1840s.

I just learned about this website in the last few days. Prior to finding the website I didn't know that members of this family came to the United States.

Broken Links

Photo: Mr. Dickie (Longwood Gardens, PA)

On the homepage of my website, near the bottom, there's a button labeled "Links". This button takes visitors to a page with buttons to webpages created and maintained by others. Yesterday I did one of my periodic, and very infrequent, checks to see if these links are working. To my dismay, after only a few minutes, I found seven that weren't working. Then I got bored with the process and didn't check all of the links. Instead I went off to do something else.

Using Google I was able to find new URLs for two of the seven that didn't work.

The whole process is tedious and time consuming. Because this often happens when links to the webpages of others are shared one has to be welling to put in the time to do the necessary periodic maintenance.

I've never had any luck getting any help with the task. By this I mean that I don't ever remember any visitor to my website sending me an Email to let me know they found a bad link. I'd appreciate any help I can get with website maintenance issues and also with website proof reading.

Also, if you find a particularly useful website pertaining to one of the surnames that are featured on my webpages I'll consider adding a link to that information if you send the URL in an Email.

The purpose of this message is to let visitors know that I am aware of the problem with the Links page and that I intend to work on the project to insure that all of the links work. I make no promise as to when I'll have the work completed.

Thank you for your patience.

Cornelius Atkinson - Frontier Ranger

In June of 1950 a four page article (pages 123-127) titled, Cornelius Atkinson - Frontier Ranger was published in The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine (Vol. XIII, 5) by Atkinson descendant, William C. Hudson. The article consisted of two pages of textual information and three pages of genealogy descendant chart. There were five numbered citations in the article. Unfortunately the citations themselves were lost. In January 1996 researcher Professor Raymond Bell shared this article with me. Recently, in July 2008, I reviewed the article and decided I'd like to share it on the Internet.

To make a document that I could share I rekeyed all five pages. I entered the information into my genealogy program, RootsMagic. The textual information, which was on the first two-plus pages of the original article, was included in the notes of the appropriate individuals. I also wrote several paragraphs in the note fields when I wanted to comment on something in the orginial piece. I did resist the temptation to add additional information. My goal wasn't to create an updated Atkinson genealogy. Rather, I wanted to share the information from the original article in a format which uses more pages and which lends itself to publication on my website.

I selected a numbering system (D'Aboville (indented)) similar to the one used by Mr. Hudson in his article.

I hope readers will be pleased with the result. Anyone working on the Atkinson family of Monroe County, Ohio owes William C. Hudson a debt of gratitude.

As of Sep 2009 you will have to ask me about this document. It isn't available on the Internet.

Today's HotLink topic is GEDCOMs. GEDCOMs are genealogy files that allow us to exchange genealogy information between genealogy programs. Some programs can read a GEDCOM file and create webpages. One program, Ancestral Author, can convert a GEDCOM file to a very nice PDF file with the names linked.

If you want to learn more about GEDCOM perhaps you'll find something helpful at one of these websites.

PDF Files for Genealogy

In the last few years PDF formatted files have been assuming a more significant role in online genealogy publishing.

The RootsMagic genealogy program can output PDF files. The Ancestral Quest program can produce very nice "linked" PDF reports from GEDCOM files. Other reports from genealogy programs can be converted to PDF using free or shareware programs.

The use of PDF insures that the recipient of the file can read and print the report with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on their own computer.

There's a PDF page link on the homepage of my genealogy website. From the PDF page you can access several reports that I have made available to anyone who visits.

New PDF Document

Today I posted a new PDF document to the genealogy website. The title of the document is, A Collection of Documents About Members of The Conger Family. The infomation in this 53-page document was compiled by Richard E. Henthorn and Robert Guilinger over a period of years when they worked on Conger Family genealogy together.

There is no particular order to how the documents are arranged in the collection. There's a Contents list on page two. The last page in the document is an advertisement for the program I used to generate the PDF file.

Several of the articles are of particular interest because they are about people who worked on Conger genealogy over the years.

If you are interested in the history and genealogy of the Conger family I hope you will find something of interest in this document.

To find the document go to the website homepage. Scroll down until you find the button for PDF files. Click that button. This will take you to the PDF document page. Look for the button with the title of the document near the bottom of the page. Click to download the document to your computer in PDF format.

Adam Hinthorn and Mary Audria Ogden

I posted a four generation descendant chart for Adam Hinthorn and Mary Audria Ogden to my Google Henthorn Website Group. This couple lived in McLean County, Illionis.

You'll find the chart in the "Pages" section of the group. The number of characters in each posting to AOL blogs is limited to 25,000. Therefore, rather than spend time trying to determine if something will fit here I'll just post it to the other place when I think I might exceed the limit.

If you have anything you'd like to share with others send it in an Email or attached to an Email and I will consider posting it to the Group.

Have fun with your genealogy and consider sharing with others and donating a copy of your work to one or more genealogy libraries.

Google Searches

Here's a Google Search Tip. There might be some useful genealogy PDF files available about a surname that you are working on. To find out enter the following in the Google search box (where "surname" is replaced with the surname of interest.) Enter the word "genealogy" to focus the search on our topic of interest.

filetype:pdf surname genealogy

You can search for other file types too. For example, replace "pdf" with "rtf" to search for Rich Text Files. Get the idea?

Posting to Henthorn Website Group

Be sure to visit the new Google Henthorn Website Group. I've been posting some information there from my computer files.

While visiting please consider registering as a "member." Take time to create a member profile so other visitors will know who you are and something about your genealogy interests.

Once you become familar with how the "group" works jump right in. Make postings to the Discussions, Pages and Files areas. If you've always wanted to have a genealogy website where you could share some of your information but didn't quite know how to go about it the group just might be what you need to get started. You don't have to know anything about HTML to share your photos, files and documents.

If you have any questions about how to go about getting more involved don't hesitate to ask. I'll do my best to help out.

Laptop Computer Issues

I'm using a Dell Latitude laptop and a phone line for my connection to the Internet and to AOL. Last night I experienced two problems with the computer that I don't understand. Both locked up the computer. Even though I was getting the power from the wall outlet I wasn't able to shutdown the computer when I disconnected from the power. I had enough bad experiences with personal computers to know that this is no doubt just a signal of bigger problems to come.

If you don't see me online in the AOL genealogy chatroom and there are infrequent postings to my various Blogs please rest assured, if this happens soon, that I am not ill. I'll just be back in the same situation I've been in before, no working computers in the house. When this happened before I used the computers at the public library for many months. I'm hopeful that won't be necessary.

Henthorn Website Group

HOn the evening of 16 June 2008 I created the Henthorn Website Group on Google.com. The purpose of this Group is to provide a place where visitors to my Henthorn genealogy website can communicate with each other.

If you've been visiting my AOL genealogy website in the last few months you've probably noticed that I'm trying to make the website more interesting by trying news ways to quickly post information. The idea is to avoid creating webpages that require lots of my time to generate.

I'm aware that some genealogy website offer "guestbooks" where visitors can post their comments. After looking at many guestbooks I began to wonder if there might be another way to get visitors involved actively when they visit the website.

I have a hunch that using a free Group may serve the purpose. Of course, we won't know until we try it. And, it won't work unless visitors are interested enough to join the group and then post messages from time to time.

To get started I'm announcing the formation of the Group with this message in Henthorn Website News. I'll include the hotlink to the Group below. Later, once I'm sure I have things set up properly I'll add a link on the website homepage.

Your comments are solicited. You can Email me directly, you can post to the Group and you can Email from the Group site.
