RootsMagic Version 5

I started the learning process with RootsMagic5. My first impression - it's going to be somewhat nerve wracking and a challenge. The format of the displays and the control buttons is quite different from version 3 which I have used for several years.

I created a GEDCOM from a small, 83 person file, moved it from one computer to the other via Email, loaded it into RootsMagic5. I got it to work. This file should give me what I need to practice and learn. I'm confused about why I can't see the files with the Windows Explorer.

The Help file didn't really explain what steps I should use to move the data from one computer to the other.  They seemed to assume that I would upgrade from the old version to the version on the same computer.  Transferring the files with Gmail should work unless they exceed file size limits.

Time to take a break.

RootsMagic Version 5

Yesterday I ordered, downloaded and installed version five of the Roots Magic genealogy program on the new Toshiba laptop. Before yesterday there was no genealogy program on the new computer. In the days ahead I will be setting up the folders for the new program and moving the genealogy files from version three of Roots Magic on the old desktop computer. I'm looking forward to being able to once again share the work I did in the past. It's also going to be fun to try out some of the features of the program that I wasn't able to use in the past. If health and interest hold up in 2012 I should be able to accomplish some interesting genealogy projects. I'll keep you posted on my genealogy blogs.

Best Free Genealogy or Family Tree Software

Here's a Gizmo's article about free genealogy programs.

I currently use a version of RootsMagic that a friend purchased for me. I'm planning to install the latest version on my laptop soon.

I have also used Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and still have a version of that program on my oldest computer.
