Compare Classic Google Sites & New Sites

Compare Classic Google Sites & New Sites:

As of 20 Mar 2018 there are two versions of Google Sites, Classic and New.

If you are currently using the Classic Google Sites or if you are contemplating building a "free" website with this service you need to be aware of the ramifications.
  • What are the differences?
  • What will I need to learn if I migrate to the new style?
  • When will Google drop support of Classic Sites?
  • Is "free" really "free?"
This link takes you to a page where Google explains the situation. Click on the down arrows to read the details.

LDS Ancestral File Numbers

Here's a PDF that lists the LDS Ancestral File Numbers (AFN) in my pafyoh RootsMagic database.

An HTML link to the report, which is stored on my Google Drive account, displays the report. I adjusted the width to 425 to make the pop-out button visible on this page.

There is a "pop-out" arrow in the upper righthand corner. The bottom and right hand scroll bars also work without using the pop-out option. Use the plus-sign to enlarge the display to make the bottom scroll bar appear.

The purpose of this post was to assist me in the learning process. I think the result is pretty cool. There is always more to learn.

Virginia Helen Conaway Project Update

I continue to work on the project to re-type the 8-page, "Ice's Ferry" document written by Virginia Helen Conaway of West Virginia many years ago.

Susan Henthorn proofread my work and made some comments and suggestions. The next step is for me to review her efforts and incorporate the necessary changes into my draft.

I also started to put together my own piece about the project. My goal will be to help readers of the Conaway document understand what she wrote and identify who were the people mentioned.

It's a big project. I'm not predicting when it will be completed.

WikiSpaces Closing

WikiSpaces Closing

Yesterday, while at the Senior Center to attend the twice-monthly Bowie Seniors Computer Club meeting I was using one of the two public computers in the hallway for a half-hour session.

The first thing I noticed was that a lady had been using Gmail and left the computer without signing off. She left over 4,000 Email messages open to public view. I was able to quickly figure out how to sign her off.

Next, I noticed a message from WikiSpaces. They announced that they will be shutting down the business in 2018 in a phased manner.  This will have an impact on me. In January I paid them $100 for a yearly subscription for the web space where I share lots of my genealogy information. I didn't determine how long I have to save my work. I didn't see this coming.

If you are interested in downloading anything I share on WikiSpaces or if you want to record any of the Links to other content that I share, now is the time to take action.

At this point, I haven't had enough time to think about what I want to do next. Building a website isn't a trivial matter, it takes many hours. If you have any proven suggestions that have worked for you I'm interested in what you have to say.
