Conger Family PDF Files

This morning I am sharing twelve Conger files in PDF format with two friends who are interested in the history and genealogy of this family. Gmail makes it easy to quickly attached the files to a message and send them on their way. There's really not much point in doing genealogy if you don't publish in some way or the other.

Don't be afraid to ask me if I have something I can share. You just might Get Lucky.

BIOGRAPHY: George Lemley
The most complete record of the Lemley Family has been sent to us by Mr. Fred Lemley, an attorney at Fairmont, W.Va. There are some questions still unanswered as to the origin of the pioneer George Lemley. One tradition states he served as a soldier at Fort Pitt, leaving the Army prior to the close of the Revolution, to settle in the vicinity of Fort Jackson. There he is said to have traded a great coat for a tract of land. Family tradition also says he was born in Germany about 1741, though it is possible he belonged to the family of that name that were early settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and may have been at Fort Pitt with the troops from that section. He or his family may have settled for a time in Salsford Township, Philadelphia County. It is definite that he served a tour of duty with Captain James Archer's Company of Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia in 1782, and a few years later got warrants for two tracts of land in what is now Whiteley Township, Greene County, and settled on a branch of Whiteley Creek, near the Franklin Township line. It appears that he was twice married, the second wife being Catherine Yoho. He died in Greene County on June 1, 1813, and his estate was probated June 29, 1813. OBITUARY: Pioneer Northern Colorado Farmer Passes Away Unexpectedly Friday
Frank E. Wykert died at the home of his son, Robert Wykert, in Eaton, [CO], Friday evening, February 11, [1916], of acute Bright's disease and pneumonia. He had been ailing for several years, but the disease in its acute form lasted but a few days, in fact, he had only been confined to his bed since Thursday morning. Although well on in years he was full of energy, and had walked down town against the protests of his son and daughter almost to the last.

Mr. Wykert was born in West Virginia April 14, 1848. While still a child his family moved to Ohio and later to Iowa, settling near Wapello. There, in 1866 he married Miss Lorinda (sic) Hill. In 1881 the family came west and settled near Windsor, Colorado, where the last thirty-five years of his life were spent. Mrs. Wykert died in 1905. Three sons and two daughters survive the parents: Robert of Eaton; Theodore of Severance; Benjamin of Hereford, Colorado; Mrs. Ava Alkire of Fairplay, and Mrs. Harry Stiff of Stanton, Illinois.

When it was found that the father was seriously ill, Mrs. Stiff was summoned, but reached the home of her brother on the 9 o'clock train Friday evening, two hours after the father had passed on.

Mr. Wykert was a farmer, and there is only this to be said of his life: His children remember him as always under all circumstances a kind and affectionate father whose life interest was in his children, who loved his fellow-man and who had no enemy on earth. What more could be said or what richer heritage left behind? He died February 11, 1916. (Furnished by Joan Wykert Jukes)

AKA: Frantz Weickart. He was called, Frank.

BIRTH: 2 Jun 1737, River Rhine, Germany, per Vernon Anderson

MARRIAGE:
In a July 1989 letter Betty W. King; 1161 Nogales Street; Lafayette, CA 94549 wrote: I found a marriage record for "Frantz Wiekert of Reading and Elisabetha Shaefer" on 13 Oct 1783 in a book "Berks Co., Pennsylvania Marriages 1730-1800," p. 54 The marriage was performed by Rev. William Boos. In checking the Lutheran and Reformed church records for Berks Co., I noted that Rev. Johann Wilhelm Boos of Reading was the pastor of the "Reformed Church of the so-called Schwartzwald." ... At Rev. Boos' church I found the baptismal records of Frantz Weichart, son of Frantz Weichart, bp. 6 Dec 1785 (no mother's name), sponsors: Frantz Meyer and Anna Maria Graf. Also the record for Lydia Weickart, daughter of Frantz Weickart, bp. 16 Aug 1793, sponsors: the parents (again no mother's name). Also, the bp. record for Samuel Freymeier, son of Eliazabetha Freymeier, bp. 18 Dec 1788, sponsors: Frantz Weickart and wife Elizabetha.

Betty King continues: I tried to get a death date for Francis Wykert in West Virginia. The appraisement on his estate was dated 16 Jun 1825, Nicholas Wykert administrator, so he probably died shortly before that date. The estate amounted to $270.66. Sales of his personal effects were reported to Reason Biddle, Nicholas and Francis Wykert and Loyd Biddle. The estate was not settled until 22 Mar 1828 and the settlement reported expenses, among others of $3.44 for the funeral and $5.50 for the coffin.

According to the 1888 biographical sketch of his son, Theodore Wykert, he emigrated from Germany about 1761, settling in Pennyslvania, where he was married and reared a family of nine children, all of whom grew to mature years. They also married, and with one exception all died in West Virginia, this one being Nicholas, who removed to Kansas and died there some years ago.

BIOGRAPHY: Biographical Sketch
Francis Wykert, son of Frantz and Elizabetha Shaefer Weickert, was born on 6 Dec 1785 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized in the Reformed Church of the Schwarzwald by Rev. William Boos, in Berks County, PA. His family moved to Washington Co., PA and finally to Marshall Co. (W)VA.

Francis Wykert (aka Francis Wicherd) married Nancy Ann Yoho, daughter of Henry and Catherine Baker Yoho, 5 Jul 1810 in Belmont Co., OH (Book ?, page 41). Nancy Ann was born ca. 1790 in Marshall Co., (W)VA. Francis and Nancy Ann were the parents of eleven children. They owned land in Tyler County (W)VA from 1820 to 1831 (now Wetzel Co., WV).

The family moved to Burlington, Des Moines Co., IA in 1838, taking a boat at Wells Landing (Wellsburg, WV?) going down the river to Cincinnati and St. Louis and then up to Burlington.

They first settled in the wilderness where the only sounds were the howl of the wolf and whoop of the Indians. Francis Wykert purchased eighty acres in Burlington Twp. from the government. There he built an 18 x 20 log cabin. His thrift and industry bore fruits and two years later he was able to add to his real estate. This he sold at a profit.

In 1840 he purchased 200 acres in Louisa County, Iowa. This became one of the best farms in the country.

Nancy Wykert died in Louisa Co., IA in 1841. Francis Wykert died in Louisa Co., IA on 9 Dec 1845.

BIOGRAPHY:
Nathan W. Okey, stock-breeder, was born in Monroe County, Ohio, February 19, 1823, and is the son of Arthur and Sophia (Hollister) Okey.

The father was born in Delaware, October 5, 1786, and the mother was born in Connecticut, October 14, 1789. When young they came with their parents to Ohio, and were among the early settlers. Here they were married, and here passed their entire lives. He was an extensive farmer and stock-dealer, and often drove stock to Philadelphia, as there were at that time no railroads. He was a strong Whig in his political views; and he and wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died July 4, 1838, from the effects of having a tooth pulled. His wife died October 17, 1876.

In their family were eight children, six sons and two daughters, and the fourth child in order of birth was Nathan W. Okey. Like the average country boy he received a good practical education in the common schools, but later attended Woodsfield College.

Like a dutiful son he remained with his mother until he married, and then she made her home with him. March 25, 1846, he married Miss Maria J. Belt, a native of Monroe County, Ohio, born July 5, 1826, and the fruits of this union were nine children, eight now living: Sarah M., Hannah L., Milton G., Arthur S., John H., Archie M., Jennie M., Haddie L. and Laura.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Okey are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Having lived in Ohio until 1866, he came to this county and followed tilling the soil until 1887, when he removed to Morrisville. He owned 338 acres of land, which he sold on coming to town. He now pays some attention to the raising of stock. He has a fine Lexington and Pilot horse and a good jack. He is a Republican in politics.

(Mrs. Fedorchak's comment: When I first copied this I thought there might be two Jacobs, this one who died 5 April, 1823, and the one mentioned in a suite brought by Peter Palmer who died in Nov. of 1821. But on further evidence, and putting together bits and pieces, I found that I had interpreted the above record in error. It states, "After the death of said Jacob Winland, viz on the 5th day of April, 1823, the administrators promised to pay..." I took that date to be the death date of Jacob, but another interpretation, which later proved to be the correct one was that after the death of Jacob Winland, the administrators promised to pay, and that promise was given on 5 April, 1823, as there was only one Jacob and he died in Nov. of 1821 [10 Nov 1821, REH]. So sometimes you are led astray even in interpreting the records you do find.)

In checking further in the old records, I found that at the April term of Court, 1822, Elizabeth Winland, aged 17 on 20th of Sept. 1822; Sarah Winland, aged 15 years on the 26th day of Sept. 1822, minor daughters of Jacob Winland, also Moses Winland, aged 11 years on the 26h day of June 1822, Margaret Winland, aged 7 years 9th day of Oct. 1822 and Jacob Winland, aged 9 years on the 19th day of August, 1822 (b. 1813) chose guardians. So Jacob must have died before they came into court in April, 1822 to choose guardians.

A later record showed that by 1828 Elisabeth Winland had married Jonathan Stackhouse and Sara Winland had married Benjamin Baker. Also by Feb. 1826, the widow, Sara, had married a man named Davis. (Source: "Family Research in Monroe County, Ohio," by Catharine Foreaker Fedorchak, Vol. VIII, p. 57)

PROBATE: Court of Common Pleas, Monroe Co., OH, Journal No. 1, Special Term, 7 Jul 1829, page 210 Last will of Levin Okey brought to court. Witnesses were Jeremiah Hollister and John Hollister. Cornelius and Arthur Okey, executors. (Catharine Fedorchak note. This was Levin Okey, first judge of the court in Monroe Co., [OH] and a Revolutionary Soldier from Delaware and buried in Pioneer Cemetery, but his stone is no longer readable. The law setting up the county stipulated that the court would be held at his house.) LEGAL_MATTER: Deed Book C, Monroe Co., OH, 31 Oct 1829 Nancy Phillips. late Nancy Okey to Arthur Okey, both of Monroe Co. quit-claim for $70.00 62 acres NW 1/4 Section 30, Township 4, Range--one following, (Catharine Fedorchak comment. we have proof that Nancy Okey was the dau. of Levin Okey - by matching up the land descriptions. She had first married a Fairhurst [Jeremiah Fairhurst] - see Belmont Co. marriage records, and after he died, she married James Phillips, who also died a few years later.)

John Gray and Hannah, his wife, late Hannah Okey to Arthur Okey, all of Monroe Co. quit-claim all right in 62 acres, part of NW 1/4 S.30 T.4 R.-- all interest in effects of Levin Okey, deceased, late of said county 10-31-1829. (Catharine Fedorchak comment. See deed preceeding also - Nancy Phillips, Hannah Gray, and Arthur Okey were children of Levin Okey, deceased. Levin was first Judge of Monroe Co. Court, and a Rev. soldier.) [Note: It is interesting that the word "late" as used in relation to Nancy Phillips and Hannah Gray does not mean deceased as is most commonly seen. In this case, "late" means "nee" as is commonly used to show the maiden name of a married woman. Richard E. CEMETERY: I also found a small stone here [at Pioneer Cemetery, Woodsfield, Monroe Co., OH] with crude lettering on it which I believed was for Levin Okey, the first judge of the Monroe Co., court. He is probably buried here, but even in 1960, I was not able to make much out of it except the name, Levin Okey. New Obituaries

I posted six obituaries to my obituary blog today.

  • Blake, Joseph Boyles
  • Goddard, Nicholas Hitch
  • Okey, Cornelius
  • Rine, Foster Lincoln
  • Rine, James Miller
  • Thompson, David Wadsworth

I hadn't posted anything there in over a month. These obituaries came from my "Burton" RootsMagic file. I extracted the information using the Individual Summary report format which includes everything from the "note" field and more.

Remember the Days of Long Ago

Remember the days of long ago; think about the generations past. Ask your father and he will inform you. Inquire of your elders, and they will tell you. (Deuteronomy 32:7 in The One-Year Mini For Men, 27 May)

I have a hunch I posted this verse before. Oh well, I like it, so I'm posting it without checking. 10/Jun/2010 9:01

Self-justifying Historian

The ego is a self-justifying historian which seeks only that information that agrees with it, rewrites history when it needs to, and does not even see the evidence that threatens it. (Anthony G. Greenwald in The Promise of a New Day, 22 May) 6 Jun 2010

Stauffer Family of Pike County, Illinois

Last week I found an obituary for Maud Ellen (Stauffer) Carroll on the Internet. She died on 5 Apr 2009 at Mt. Sterling, (Brown Co.,) Illinois. I already had a record for her in my genealogy file but didn't have the information about her descendants that could be extracted from the obituary. I enjoyed including a copy of the obituary in her "note" field and adding the information about the members of her family.

This morning I created a nice 73-page PDF report that lists everything in my genealogy file about the Stauffer family, many of whom are from Pike Co., Illinois the location of my own Henthorn roots.

Earl William Carson and Dorothy May Huff

Last week I was contacted by researchers, Art and Miriam Belding about their interest in the Baker family of the Ohio River Valley. They are working on the Baker branches that moved to Charlevoix Co., Michigan. These were the branches of interest to researcher, Earl William Carson, who many years ago wrote to Mrs. Fedorchak about his genealogy quest. Mrs. Fedorchak published at least one article in The Spirit of Democracy, published in Woodsfield, Monroe Co., OH, about their correspondence. As far as I can recall she never listed Earl's middle name and where he fit into the Baker tree or the name of his wife, Dorothy May Huff. I don't think she mentioned that both Earl and Dorothy had Baker ancestors.

Now, thanks to Art and Miriam, I was able to include Earl and Dorothy into my genealogy files for the first time. I'm pleased to learn that Art and Miriam have copies of many pages of Earl Carson's notes. It's a great thing for Baker family research to learn that Earl's notes aren't lost and to know that Art and Miriam are working on extracting the data and putting it into their Personal Ancestral File (PAF).

This morning, for the first time, I was able to prepare an Ahnentafel Chart that shows the Baker lines of both Earl and Dorothy.

When a contact like this happens it's always so much fun because you never know when, or if, a mystery will be solved. For me one of the most frustrating aspects of doing genealogy has always been that often we can't tell where a researcher fits and often no one knows what happened to their notes or whether they ever published anything and left it where those who come after can find it.
