Researching Your Family—A Suggestion on Where to Start

Researching Your Family—A Suggestion on Where to Start:

More about using the FamilySearch Wiki.  Did you know you can contribute to the Wiki?

Have you considered creating your own wiki for genealogy?  I did and I created one on WikiSpaces.com so we can learn about how to do it together.  This means that you are invited to contribute.  If you don't know what to do, just ask and I will try to help. Where's the wiki?  It's just a click away.  Your feedback would be helpful.

Stay N Alive: Ancestry.com Buys Top Facebook App We're Related

Stay N Alive: Ancestry.com Buys Top Facebook App We're Related:

I have no idea what the significance of this acquisition might be.  I hadn't thought much about it, but come to think of it, most of the "family" apps disappeared from my Facebook wall months ago.  I've often wondered why businessmen pay huge sums of money to buy companies that no longer appear to be viable.  Perhaps that's why they are rich and I'm not.

HenthornFamily Wiki

My current genealogy project is to learn about how we can use Wikis for genealogy.  For a couple of weeks I have been building the HenthornFamily wiki on WikiSpaces.  Please feel free to visit, to comment, to provide feedback and to participate by sharing your information and collaborating by posting to the Wiki.

HenthornFamily Wiki

This week I've added links to Ahnentafels and to County and Society websites.

If you are aware of genealogy websites for any of the variations of the Henthorn surname please post the links to the Wiki or send them to me in an Email and I will do it.

Pet Peeves

I've been involved in genealogy for many years.

During that time I've developed some pet peeves that never seem to be far from the back of my mind.

  1. When you contact someone to ask for their help be certain you identify yourself  by stating your full name and writing a little about the information you have and the information you seek. In my opinion, if you are not willing to provide your name and contact information you probably shouldn't expect to get much help or even a reply.
  2. The first time you ask for information it is never a good idea to use the phrase, "Send me everything you've got."
  3. Be sure you know how to spell genealogy before you attempt to use that word in anything you write.

It's always a good idea, when requesting information, that you offer to share what you have.
