Shutdown Of Henthorn Website - Google Group

Today, 1 April 2013, I closed the Henthorn Website - Google Group.

I download the Email addresses and modified the file by manually adding the Display Names everyone used to make myself a record of those who participated. All Group participants did not supply their names.

Google didn't provide a way to archive the contents of the Group. I saved the most interesting messages by Emailing them to one of my Email accounts. I haven't decided whether this information is something I might make available on the HenthornFamily Wiki.

Thanks to everyone who took part in this genealogy experiment.

Henthorn Website - Google Group

This link is to the Henthorn Website group on Google.

The Henthorn Website - Google Group is a place where people with common genealogy interests can post and share information.

I am interested in Hagstrom/Carlson, Henthorn(e) and Hinthorn(e) family history and genealogy. I also am interested in: Conger, Yoho, Watson, Jackson, Mozena.

There are many connections between the Henthorn, Yoho and Conger families in Monroe county, Ohio and in Wetzel and Marshall counties in West Virginia.

If you are interested in any of these surnames I encourage you to consider joining the Henthorn Website group. As of October 2009 there are only twelve members of the group and there has been very little posting.

Group members can post to the Discussions, and to the Files and Pages areas. In certain cases it may be necessary to coordinate with me in order to affect the post. So far I am the only person posting to Files or Pages. There has been some posting to the Discussions.

At this time membership in the group is by request or invitation only. This allows me to maintain control of who has access to the group.

If you are a current group member I hope you will consider posting more frequently. If you aren't a member I hope you will consider taking part.

Google Group Updates - Yoho Family

One of the benefits of finally getting high-speed Internet access is that uploading files and photographs is no longer a problem.

Today I posted around a dozen scanned images of newspaper articles about members of the Yoho family to my Google Group - Henthorn Website News. These images were shared, several years ago, by researcher, Terry Willis. Thanks Terry. They were stored on my desktop computer which has some issues. Recently I put them on a thumb drive which allowed me to access the files with the laptop computer I used to get on the Internet.

If anyone doing Yoho research looks at the images and finds them useful, I'd appreciate some feedback. I can't tell if the Google Group is being visited or not.

CongerDocs.pdf

Today I posted a file called, CongerDocs.pdf to the Files area of the Google group.

The title of the document, dated 30 Jun 2008, is, "A Collection of Documents About Members of the Conger Family," by Richard E. (Edson) Henthorn and Robert Guilinger. There are fifty-three pages in the document.

Ever since AOL dropped website support in October 2008 I have been giving thought to how to go about maintaining an Internet presence.

The idea of paying for webspace to recreate my genealogy website didn't appeal to me. In the past I found maintaining skill in the use of HTML and Cascading Style Sheets was a lot of work.

I decided to see what I could accomplish using free space and capabilities offered by Google and others.

I created four Google blogs:
1. Mr. Dickie's Blog - where I post quotations that I like and things that are on my mind. I usually post to this blog daily. It also feeds to my "Notes" on Facebook.

2. Arrow Prayers - where I post short prayers. I usually post to this blog once a day too.

3. Henthorn Website News - I use this blog to post genealogy news and other information about the families I'm interested in: Henthorn(e), Hinthorn(e), Conger and Yoho. I post to this one as the mood strikes me and as time permits.

4. Henthorn Website Obits - this blog is the place where I share obituaries as I extract them from my files or as they become available on the Internet. I post to this one when something becomes available.

I also created a Google group.
5. Henthorn Website - A group is a place where people with a common interest can become members and share information. Response to this idea has, so far, been underwhelming. There is a Discussion Board where members can post messages to various topics. There is an area where "files" can be shared and a place where "pages" can be shared. I have successfully posted the following file types to the group: JPEGs, HTML, TXT, and PDFs.

I joined a social bookmarking site.
6. Del.icio.us - My AOL website had a Links page I used to share URLs to other websites I felt might be of interest to others working on the same surnames. Recently I found a better way to accomplish this task, and more, which is very user friendly. I'm posting my links to the social bookmarking site Del.icio.us. If you haven't taken a look at this site I recommend doing so. You don't have to join to use it. To post your own links you must register.

I'm writing today to announce that all six components are now linked together from the four Google blogs. There is a "link" box in the right-hand sidebar of each blog with the names of the various pieces of what I call "my virtual website." From the "link" box you can go to any of the other components. To return to the Google blogs from either the "group" or "Del.icio.us use your browser "back" key.

I'm interested in feedback.

New PDF Document

Today I posted a new PDF document to the genealogy website. The title of the document is, A Collection of Documents About Members of The Conger Family. The infomation in this 53-page document was compiled by Richard E. Henthorn and Robert Guilinger over a period of years when they worked on Conger Family genealogy together.

There is no particular order to how the documents are arranged in the collection. There's a Contents list on page two. The last page in the document is an advertisement for the program I used to generate the PDF file.

Several of the articles are of particular interest because they are about people who worked on Conger genealogy over the years.

If you are interested in the history and genealogy of the Conger family I hope you will find something of interest in this document.

To find the document go to the website homepage. Scroll down until you find the button for PDF files. Click that button. This will take you to the PDF document page. Look for the button with the title of the document near the bottom of the page. Click to download the document to your computer in PDF format.

Posting to Henthorn Website Group

Be sure to visit the new Google Henthorn Website Group. I've been posting some information there from my computer files.

While visiting please consider registering as a "member." Take time to create a member profile so other visitors will know who you are and something about your genealogy interests.

Once you become familar with how the "group" works jump right in. Make postings to the Discussions, Pages and Files areas. If you've always wanted to have a genealogy website where you could share some of your information but didn't quite know how to go about it the group just might be what you need to get started. You don't have to know anything about HTML to share your photos, files and documents.

If you have any questions about how to go about getting more involved don't hesitate to ask. I'll do my best to help out.

Henthorn Website Group

HOn the evening of 16 June 2008 I created the Henthorn Website Group on Google.com. The purpose of this Group is to provide a place where visitors to my Henthorn genealogy website can communicate with each other.

If you've been visiting my AOL genealogy website in the last few months you've probably noticed that I'm trying to make the website more interesting by trying news ways to quickly post information. The idea is to avoid creating webpages that require lots of my time to generate.

I'm aware that some genealogy website offer "guestbooks" where visitors can post their comments. After looking at many guestbooks I began to wonder if there might be another way to get visitors involved actively when they visit the website.

I have a hunch that using a free Group may serve the purpose. Of course, we won't know until we try it. And, it won't work unless visitors are interested enough to join the group and then post messages from time to time.

To get started I'm announcing the formation of the Group with this message in Henthorn Website News. I'll include the hotlink to the Group below. Later, once I'm sure I have things set up properly I'll add a link on the website homepage.
