Before Mr. J.W. Carter a Justice of the Peace in and for the Township of Cincinnati County and State aforesaid comes James W. Henthorn resident of Washington Township, county of Ripley, state of Indiana who being duly sworn makes oath and says that on the 13th of July A.D. 1863 as av. Genl. Hobson in command of a force of United States soldiers being then in pursuit of the Rebel Gen. John Morgan and Rebels under the command of said Rebel Genl. John Morgan passed through the adjoining township Franklin some one or more of the men in the 2nd Tenn. Regt. - then under Genl. Hobson took from him one mare also at the same time some one or more of the men took from the affiant for the use of the U.S.C. Cavalry Regiment then under the command of Genl. Hobson the said parties at the time of taking said mares gave affiant receipts or papers purporting to be such which are herewith presented. The following is a description of the Mares afore offered to Witt -
one brown in color 16 hands high 7 years old no mark about her that affiant knows of Also one brown mare 15 hands high 12 years old no marks that affiant Knows of also one gray mare - about 15 hands high 6 years old.
Affiant further says that the Grey Mare was worth $100.00 and brown mare 12 years old was worth $100.00 and brown mare 7 years old was worth $120.00
Affiant says that as much as the said horses were taken from him and the value above stated is reasonable price he ought to receive said amount for said horses.
Affiant further makes oath and says he is now and has ever been a loyal Citizen of the United States of America and that he will ever bear true faith and allegiance to the said United States.

Carter a Justice of the Peace in and for the Township of Cincinnati County and state aforesaid personally came John Craven, a resident of Washington Township, Ripley County and State of Indiana who duly being sworn makes oath and says that he knows that the statements set fourth in the within affidavit sworn and subscribed to by James W. Henthorn are true and correct.
