Our Huggins/Huggans Family

Website of Dee Huggins.

"Nearly all of the Huggins / Huggans families on this site were from West Virginia, Pennsylvania and/or Ohio."

Remember the Days of Long Ago

Remember the days of long ago; think about the generations past. Ask your father and he will inform you. Inquire of your elders, and they will tell you. (Deuteronomy 32:7 in The One-Year Mini For Men, 27 May)

Yesterday I discovered a couple of pages of information about some members of the Stauffer family of Pike county, Illinois. There's a link between the Stauffer family and my own Henthorn family. The most interesting thing was that Beverly Ann Stauffer married Richard David Conger, Jr. I have also done a lot of work on the Conger family. I checked my Conger file to see if I could figure out where Richard David Conger, Jr. fits into that family. I couldn't.

BIOGRAPHY: Jacob Baker married Mary Steen June 23, 1798 and this record can be found in Jefferson Co. Both are buried at Calais.

Both were living in Seneca Township in 1850, and all the Baker family knew of the Indian battles and the death of Capt. John Baker at Baker's Fort. Jacob Baker related these stories to his daughter, Sara, who in turn told her grandchildren. Sara Baker Ingraham was born in 1810 and died in 1900 and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Jackson Co., W.Va. The information handed down in this manner included the story that Jacob Baker was often bothered by nightmares and would wake up screaming that the Indians were going to attack. When he died, a pound of gunpowder in a horn, was buried with him, as per his last request.

With the burning of many records all proof of this relationship between Jacob Baker and Sara was presumed lost, however, in Record Book 18, page 362, in the Court of Common Pleas, we found a record of Jacob Baker's will, which had been re-entered in the records of a civil suit. It shows that Jacob made his last will and testament on the 13th day of Nov. 1852, and died in 1861, that he owned the NE 1/2 of S.11, T.7, R.7, which he ordered divided into four equal lots by running lines north and south across this quarter section, and he left these equal lots to his sons, Henry, John, Jacob and Andrew.

He also bequeathed items to his daughters: ELEANOR MARTIN, SARAH INGRAHAM, MARGARET BAKER, ELIZABETH REYNOLDS, and to his grand-daughter, Mary Ann Stephens, daughter of his daughter, Elizabeth Reynolds. (Source: Family Research in Monroe County, Catharine Fedorchak, 8 Feb 1968)

Isaac Baker

PARENTS: Capt. John Baker and Elizabeth Ann Sullivan

BIRTH: Birth place listed as, Wheeling Creek on a family group sheet of Denver Yoho and Clarice Stanley.

MARRIAGE: From "Ohio Marriages Recorded in County Courts Through 1820: an Index" pg 41, Baker, Isaac m. Perkins, Ruth May 06, 1802 BELM DBA 069 (Furnished by Valerie Kramer)

QUESTION-CHILDREN: Did Isaac Baker and Ruth Brock really have two children, who reached adulthood, who had the same first name: John A. Baker and John Nelson Baker? If so, this is very unusual. Who can prove that both of these men were the sons of this couple? REH

RESIDENCES: Isaac Baker moved to Tazewell, IL, with his son, Isaac, after the death of Ruth (Brock) Baker. (Furnished by Anne Rast)

DEATH-CONFLICT: Was the date of death, 1886 in Taswell Co., OH or 1865 at Tazewell Co., IL (per DAR records)? Dick Henthorn and Valerie Kramer agree that they can't find a Taswell Co., OH. Can anyone cite a primary source that proves the death, 1865 in Boynton Twp., Tazewell Co., IL?

REFERENCE: From "Family Research in Monroe County, Ohio Vol I" pgs 398-399, "(6) Isaac Baker was born Feb. 1782 and died in 1865. N.S. DAR paper No. 319705 is for descent from Capt. John Baker through this son. That paper gives Isaac's birth as 1782 and death as 1865. It also states his wife was Ruth Brooke.

Hardesty's Historical Hand Atlas of Monroe Co., published in 1882, gives her name as Brock. I believe Brock is more likely, as Brocks also lived in Monroe Co. However, some of the Belmont Co. histories give her name as Ruth Perkins.

Page 9 of Hardesty's Historical Hand Atlas, Monroe Co. states, "John Nelson Baker, born this county (Monroe) March 8, 1823, son of Isaac Baker who died in 1865 and Ruth Brock, who died in 1844."

The lady who submitted the DAR paper was descended from Isaac and Ruth Baker through another son, George Washington Baker (1802-1880) and Nancy Floyd (1803-1859) who were married in 1821. This paper also refers to an earlier one for proof of service for Capt. John Baker, No. 317289, however I do not have a copy of that paper.

Paper #319705 also indicates that Elizabeth Sullivan and Capt. Baker were married at Philadelphia, Pa. in 1765.

Mr. Earl Carson of Boyne City, Michigan, also interested in this family, has stated that he believes Capt. John was married once prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Sullivan. Therefore if he and this DAR paper are correct and that marriage was in 1765, then Henry Baker (#1 in this column) born 1762/63 could not have been the son of Elizabeth Sullivan." (Furnished by Valerie Kramer)

RESEARCHER: Earl Carson of Boyne City, Michigan It is clear from the newspaper columns of Mrs. Catherine Fedorchak that Earl Carson was working on the genealogy of the Baker family.

Richard Henthorn asked Valerie Kramer if she knew where Mr. Carson fit into the Baker family tree and if he ever published the results of his research. Her reply follows.

"No, Earl Carson never published and it's a sad story.

I don't know exactly where he fits in myself. He lived in Michigan so is presumably a descendent of either John Carson and Sarah Conarissen Baker (dau. of John Farnsworth Baker, son of Martin D. Baker, son of Captain John Baker) or Samuel Carson and Laura Etta Baker (another daughter of John Farnsworth Baker). I don't know if John and Samuel Carson were related but it wouldn't surprise me. I guess this is an area I should pursue in more detail.

In any event, Earl Carson corresponded on a number of occasions with Mrs. Fedorchak as shown by his letters reproduced in the Fedorchak publications produced by the Monroe County Genealogy Society. Clearly he was working on Baker genealogy.

When I went to Michigan I visited with Myrtle Carson (nee Baker, dau of James Baker and Luella Kightlinger, son of Jacob N. Baker and Louisa May Butt, son of David Baker and Mary Jane Reynolds, son of Martin D. Baker, son of Captain John Baker), and with Benjamin Albert Thompson (son of Ulysses S. Grant Thompson, son of Margaret Ann Baker, dau of John Farnsworth Baker), and Laura Lynn Carson (Myrtle Baker-Carson's daughter-in-law through her son, Carl Carson.)

They told me, sitting around Myrtle's kitchen table, that Earl had spent 40 years amassing books, documents, notes, photos, and other Baker information. He had an entire room devoted to it. Upon his death his widow had it all boxed up and stored in a barn and wouldn't let anyone near it. She said she'd put up with it for 40 years and didn't want to hear about it any more. Reportedly she's rebuffed everyone who's tried to resurrect any of it. I did get a copy of a stack of notes that Myrtle had. Much of it is hard or impossible to read due to the poor quality of the original copy and much of it is just notes without context - lists of names or names and dates but no indication of what they are, etc. Perhaps with more study they would make more sense but I'm not sure it's worth the effort since they aren't primary evidence anyway. I got some information from them and am happy to have them but it may be the only legacy of Earl's 40 years of effort. If that isn't sad, I don't know what is!" (Furnished by Valerie Kramer)

FATHER: According to Gail V. (Cecil) Yoho his father was Nicholas Baker. Other researchers list, George Perilous Baker. Can anyone prove it?

MILITARY: According to Denver Yoho he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

DEATH: He was killed by Indians in 1787.

John Baker

Various histories of the Upper Ohio Valley have accounts of Captain John Baker. These accounts agree in substance, but differ in some minor details. He was killed by Indians in 1787, and his son, John Baker, Jr., was killed by Indians at the same location in 1794.

"History of Marshall County, West Virginia" by Scott Powell, gives this account: "Captain John Baker was born in Prussia and came to America about 1760. He arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and five years latter married Elizabeth Sullivan of that city, and from there the young couple moved to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia where they lived two years and from there they removed to the waters of Dunkard Creek, now in Greene County, Pennsyvlannia, in the year 1767 and remained there seven years. At the time they lived on that creek there were a number of Indians residing on it and they and the whites were very friendly. At the breaking out of Dunmore's War he removed his family to Redstone Old Fort, now Brownsville. The American Revolution breaking out soon after the close of Dunmore's War, Indian hostilities soon followed the breaking out of the war. He remained at the fort a number of years, and was in the service of that Colony of Virginia much of the time during that war, but there is little record of him.

He went from Redstone to Catfish Camp in 1781, where he remained a short time and then removed to Round Bottom and in 1784 Captain Baker built a blockhouse near the upper end of Cresap's Bottom. This place was generally known by the name of Baker's Station. (Near what is now Moundsville, West Virginia.)

While two of the Wetzel men were at Baker's Station in 1787, they and Captain Baker noticed some Indians on the opposite shore of the Ohio River walking about leisurely. Baker getting an opportunity shot at one of them and killed him. The others ran away as if badly frightened, leaving the dead Indian where he fell. They did it evidently to deceive the whites, as it was proved later by their actions. Baker and the two Wetzels crossed over the river and were viewing the dead Indian when several shots were fired and Baker fell mortally wounded. The Wetzels treed and commenced to fight and some other men crossed the river and reinforced them and drove the Indians off and recovered the body of Baker. He had crawled a short distance from where he fell and was alive when recovered but died soon after arriving at the station. He was buried on a flat near a stream called Grave Yard Run at the upper end of Cresap's Bottom." (Furnished by Hugh L. Yoho)

Historical Highway Marker

The roadside marker for Captain John Baker reads: BAKER'S STATION; Site of blockhouse built by; Captain John Baker in 1784.; Rendezvous of scouts along Indian war path from Muskingum; Valley into Virginia. Near by are; buried Captain Baker, John; Wetzel, and others killed by; Indians in 1787. [Note: Semi-colons separate each line of text from the plaque. I believe this sign is located in Marshall Co., WV about one mile below the mouth of Captina Creek which flows into the Ohio River, near the boundary between Belmont and Monroe counties, Ohio. REH]

Baker family

John Baker came to this country in 1740 from Prussia. He landed in Philadelphia, and in 1760 married a lady by the name of Elizabeth Sullivan. He later moved westward to a spot below Wheeling, W.Va. on the Ohio River, where he founded Baker's Fort. This is now in Marshall Co. W.Va., about one mile below the mouth of Captina Creek, which flows into the Ohio river near the boundary between Belmont and Monroe counties. During the Revolution, he served in Va. militia units at Redstone Old Fort (now in Pa.) under Col. Silas Hedges. This service has been accepted by the DAR.

After the close of the Revolution, the Indians continued to attack the frontier settlements in a last ditch effort to keep the white men from encroaching on their hunting grounds and in 1787, Capt. John Baker was defending his fort in company with the Wetzels, when he met his death.

The Indians appeared on the opposite bank of the Ohio River, evidently seeking an opportunity to kill the whites who had taken refuge in the fort. Baker fired and killed an Indian, and the other Indians, pretending they were frightened, scattered and ran in different directions, leaving their dead brother on the ground. Baker, seeing that his shot had proved fatal, and being somewhat daring, suggested to the Wetzels that they cross the river and examine the dead Indian. When they reached the other side, the Indians resumed the attack, resulting in the death of John Baker. The Wetzels recovered the body, and carried it back across the river for burial at the fort.

Capt. John Baker and his wife, Elizabeth Sullivan were the parents of the following children: John, Jr. killed by Indians in 1794; Henry Baker, who was captured by the Indians in 1781 and later married Elizabeth Parr in 1785, and then Nancy Swaney in Belmont Co., Apr. 24, 1825; Joseph Baker who married Mary Finley Oct. 18, 1797; Martin Baker born in 1773; Jacob Baker born in 1775 and died in Monroe Co., in 1861; Isaac Baker, born 1782, died 1886 in Taswell Co., Ohio, Margaret who married Peter Yoho; Mary who married Christian Gatts, and Bessey.

John Jr. was killed at the Battle of Captina in May, 1794, and an account of this is given in Hardesty's History on page 205. Capt. Abram Enochs was also killed in this engagement.

The deed records show that Martin Baker's wife was Sarah, and Hardesty's History states that he died in Monroe Co. in 1857. Isaac Baker married Ruth Brock, and he died in 1865 and she in 1844. Their son, John Nelson Baker was born in Monroe Co. Mar. 8, 1823 -- see Hardesty's History -- biographical accounts, page 9.

RESEARCHER: Mr. Earl Carson; 1718 Broadway; Flint, MI 48506, about 1968.

BIOGRAPHY: Captain John Baker
John Baker came to America arriving at Philadelphia aboard the ship "Neptune" from Germany in 1751 or 1754. (James Jefferson Miller stated that Capt. John Baker's father was George Perilous Baker and that John's brother Jacob came to America with him.) (1)

According to the family Bible of Benjamin Baker, John Baker's siblings were Henry (1731-1808 VA) married Maria Elizabeth Fink, Jacob, George married Elizabeth Strenger, Peter, Hannah and Betty. (2)

About 1760, John Baker married, in Philadelphia, Elizabeth Sullivan. Following their marriage the couple located in the Shendandoah Valley of Virginia for about two years and by 1767 found their way to what is now Greene County, Pennsylvania, at the confluence of the Dunkard Creek and the Monongahala River where they lived until about 1774. At the time that they lived on that creek, there were a number of Indians residing on it and they and the whites were very friendly.

When Dunsmore's War broke out, they moved to Redstone Old Fort, now Brownsville, PA. The family stayed there a number of years, and John was in the service of the Colony of Virginia much of the time during the Revolutionary War but there is little record of him.

About 1780 he migrated, with his family, to Catfish Camp where they remained before going to Round Bottom in western Virginia where he built Baker's Station in 1784 near the upper end of Cresap's Bottom in present day Marshall County, WV. This is located near what is now Moundsville, West Virginia. It served as a rendezvous for scouts along the Indian War Path from the Muskingham Valley to Virginia.

While two sons of John Wetzel (perhaps Lewis, the more daring) were at Baker's Station in 1787, they and Captain Baker noticed some Indians on the opposite shore of the Ohio River walking about leisurely. Baker got an opportunity to shoot one of them and killed him. The others ran away as if badly frightened, leaving the dead Indian where he fell. They apparently did it to deceive the whites as it was proven later by their actions.

Baker and the Wetzels crossed over the river and were viewing the dead Indian when several shots were fired and Baker fell mortally wounded. The Wetzels commenced to fight and some other men crossed the river and reinforced them driving off the Indians allowing the recovery of Baker's body. He had crawled a short distance from where he fell and was alive when recovered but died soon after arriving at the station. He was buried on a flat near a stream called Grave Yard Run at the upper end of Cresap's Botton. (3) In the account of the death of John Baker in "The History of the Panhandle" (4) the following is stated: "He had crawled partially under a log, lying insensible, with both eyes gored out.....attending his funeral were Henry Baker, the old Indian warrior, and family; George Baker, Leonard Reager and two brothers, Aaron Hughes and Capt. Roberts." Martin Wetzel died in the fall of 1812 and before his death, he requested that his remains be laid along the side of John Baker's which request was granted.

An historical marker was erected at the site of Baker's Station in WV and shows John Baker's death as 1787. The marker reads, "Site of blockhouse built by Captain John Baker in 1784. Rendezvous of scouts along Indian war path from Muskingum Valley into Virginia. Near by are buried Captain Baker, John Wetzel, and others killed by Indians in 1787."

Early in the 1800s Elizabeth, his widow, is said to have gone with five of her sons (according to Al Young) across the Ohio River to Washington Township in Belmont County, Ohio. About 1813, she and three of the sons located in Center Township, where from 1813 to 1833, Martin acquired land in sections 27, 28, 33, and 34; Isaac in sections 33 and 34. Henry lived close by in Range 6, Township 6, Section 1 and Range 5, Township 5, Section 20 in 1811 and 1813 respectively.

Center Township was wilderness when it was platted in 1812. John Windland, who operated a saw mill, and Jacob Windland, who owned the grist mill, decided to get a keg of French brandy and invited all the men within a five mile radius to meet on a Saturday and clear the land.

Elizabeth's burial place, Steed Hill Cemetery, is located at the site of the old Baker farm, located about five miles south of Woodsfield on Route 26 and 800 (now owned by Charles Bott, Marietta, Ohio). Martin Baker and his second wife are buried next to her. In the 1820 census, one male and two females, all under 16, were in her household. She was not naturalized.

Notes (Individual)
General:
Martin D. Baker

PARENTS: Capt. John Baker and Elizabeth Ann Sullivan

BIRTH-CONFLICT: Fedorchak has Martin Baker born in 1773. Calculated birth date is 10 Oct 1780.

BIRTH-DEATH: Clarice Stanley and Denver Yoho list, b. 1781 at Fish Camp, Washington, PA; d. 17 Apr 1857. m. to Sarah Winland and 2nd to Sarah Farnsworth.

RESIDENCES: Washington Twp., Belmont Co., OH about 1804; Center Twp., Monroe Co., OH.

MARRIAGE: Married twice, first to Sarah Winland and second to Sarah J. Farnsworth. There was issue of both marriages. Catherine Fedorchak claimed in her Steed Cemetery Survey that there is a record of the second marriage in Belmont Co., OH. She didn't list a date.

BIRTH-CHILDREN: Martin Baker married Sarah Farnsworth and that record can be found in Belmont Co., [OH] - they married Feb. 16, 1812. A descendant of the family told me that some of the older girls were children of a previous marriage, but he did not know the name of their mother, and to date, I have not uncovered that fact either. However, the tombstone for Margaret Baker Winland - shows that she was born circa Sept. 17, 1809, so Martin's first wife must have died after that date. He said that from the 2nd marriage, Martin had 7 boys and 1 girl; Isaac b. 1814; Vincent b. 1816; Martin b. 1818; Henry b. 1822; Mary (Barrackman) b. 1825; Jackson b. 1828; John Farnsworth b. 1832 and David b. 1835. Both John F. and David were in the Civil War. The John F. Baker family went to Michigan about 1872. [Fedorchak column, 19 Sep 1994] (Source: "Family Research in Monroe County, Ohio," by Catharine Foreaker Fedorchak, Vol. X, p. 240)

LAND: 3 Sep 1813 In Monroe County Martin Baker purchased the North West quarter of Section Twenty-seven in Township four, Range Five on September 3, 1813. On September 16, 1815 Martin purchased an adjacent 109 acres in Section 33, Township 4, Range 5.

CHILDREN-COMMENT: It appears that Martin D. Baker had a child named, Mary Baker, with each of his two wives.

Census: 1850, in Monroe Co., OH, Wayne Twp., 68/68, 24 sep 1850

CEMETERY: Martin Baker is buried in Steed Cemtery, died April 27, 1857, aged 76 years, 6 months, 17 days. His wife Sara is beside him. [Note: Calculated birth date, 10 Oct 1780. REH] (Source: Catherine Fedorchak Steed Cemetery survey, unknown volume, page 99 - furnished by Ray Alfred Stewart)

LEGAL_MATTER: Suit over the Estate - Court of Common Pleas - Record Book 13, page 182 - 1858

Suit brought by James Martin and Catharina, his wife; James Winland and Margaret, his wife; Vincent Baker, plaintiffs vs: Benjamin Baker of the State of Iowa; Joseph Baker of Monroe Co; Elias Ward and Ann, his wife; residence unknown; Wm. Dearth and Mary, his wife of Monroe Co; Martin Baker, Jackson Baker, Isaac Baker, Henry Baker, and John Baker, all of Monroe Co.; Samuel Barrackman and Mary, his wife of the State of Wisconsin; David Baker of Monroe Co. and Sarah Baker, widow, of Monroe Co., all heirs at law of Martin Baker, deceased, who died the 27th of April, 1857.

The plaintiffs charge in this suit that the last will and testament of Martin Baker should be declared invalid, as the said Martin was of unsound mind due to old age and infirmity at the time he made it.

The last will of said Martin Baker was entered for probate in the court of Monroe Co. (Fedorcak note, It would no longer be available in those records, due to the courthouse fires.) and read as follows:

I, Martin Baker, of Center Township declare this to be my last will and testament, and that
1. my lawful debts be paid;
2. my wife, Sarah, and son, David Baker to have the home place where I now live during her lifetime, then David to have it after her death, which comprises about 133 acres in the home place, including the land across the creek from the house.
3. Henry Baker to have 33, acres where he now lives
4. John Baker to have about 70 acres where he now lives on the east side of the home farm.
5. Isaac Baker to have the land where he now lives containing about 54 acres. Said Isaac is to pay my five daughters, viz Catharine Martin, Mary Dearth, Margaret Winland, Anna Ward, and Mary Barrackman $25 each within one year after my decease.
6. Jackson Baker is to have the place where he now lives containing about 70 acres at the north end of the 28th section.
7. I want Joseph Baker to have 30 acres.
8. I will and bequeath to Martin Baker, Jr. about 40 acres south of the tract donated to my son John, and he is to pay my son Benjamin Baker $100 within one year from my decease. He is to pay the doctor's bills.
9. I will to my wife all my personal property and money on hand after defraying funeral expenses.

[Note: It is interesting that son, Vincent, is not mentioned in the will. A son, Benjamin, is mentioned but researchers have not listed him as a son. QUESTION: Could Vincent and Benjamin have been the same person? Also a son, William is not mentioned in the will. REH]

EMIGRATION: Some of the Martin Baker children moved to Tyler Co., WV in 1871.
QUESTION: Who knows who they were?

RESEARCHER: Mr. Earl Carson, 718 Broadway, Flint, MI 48506, a descendant of this family told Catherine Fedorchak that some of the older girls were children of a previous marriage, but he did not know the name of their mother, at at the time she was writing she had not uncovered that fact either. However the tombstone of Margaret Baker Winland shows that she was born circa Sept. 17, 1809, so Martin's first wife must have died after that date. Mr. Carson said that from the 2nd marriage, Martin had: 7 boys and 1 girl: Isaac - b. 1814; Vincent - b. 1816; Martin - b. 1818; Henry - b. 1822; Mary (Barrackman) - b. 1825; Jackson - b. 1828; John Farnsworth - b. 1832; and David - b. 1835. Both John F. and David were in the Civil War. The John F. Baker family went to Michigan about 1872. (Source: Catherine Fedorchak, unknown volume, page 97 - furnished by Ray Alfred Stewart)

George Lemley was a pioneer settler of Greene County, Pennsylvania, locating on "Lemley's Plain," along Whiteley Creek in 1784 and at his "Shiver-de-Frise" plantation along Dunkard Creek, just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, in 1794. He married Catharine Yoho, and many of their descendants moved south to become prominent citizens of Monongalia County. (Source: "The Monongalia Story" by Earl L. BIOGRAPHY: George Lemley
The most complete record of the Lemley Family has been sent to us by Mr. Fred Lemley, an attorney at Fairmont, W.Va. There are some questions still unanswered as to the origin of the pioneer George Lemley. One tradition states he served as a soldier at Fort Pitt, leaving the Army prior to the close of the Revolution, to settle in the vicinity of Fort Jackson. There he is said to have traded a great coat for a tract of land. Family tradition also says he was born in Germany about 1741, though it is possible he belonged to the family of that name that were early settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and may have been at Fort Pitt with the troops from that section. He or his family may have settled for a time in Salsford Township, Philadelphia County. It is definite that he served a tour of duty with Captain James Archer's Company of Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia in 1782, and a few years later got warrants for two tracts of land in what is now Whiteley Township, Greene County, and settled on a branch of Whiteley Creek, near the Franklin Township line. It appears that he was twice married, the second wife being Catherine Yoho. He died in Greene County on June 1, 1813, and his estate was probated June 29, 1813.
