Daniel Kyger and Ann Henthorn Family Group Sheet

Daniel Kyger and Ann Henthorn Family Group Sheet

I've been working on a data recovery project for the family of Daniel Kyger and Ann Henthorn of Danville, Vermilion Co., IL.  A descendant report for this couple with name and place name indexes is 156-pages.

I also created an updated, 11-page, Family Group Sheet for the couple that I uploaded to my Box account where it can be previewed or downloaded by anyone who has the URL. Family Group Sheets produced by RootsMagic7 include any information I stored in the Note fields plus a Name Index and a Place Index.

Besides linking to the Henthorn family the Kyger family also links to Yoho and Morgan of the Ohio River Valley.

Tennant Genealogy

I did a test run to see how many pages of information I have about the Tennant family.

The information is stored in one of my RootsMagic files.

A narrative descendant report includes an every name index and a place name index.

In general, my policy is to exchange information only with people who have done substantial work on recording their own genealogy and who are willing to share.

The current page count for the Tennant family is - 1571 pages.

Benjamin and Mary Edgell

From time to time I like to run a test to determine how many pages of information there would be in a Narrative Descendant report if I decided I wanted to share with someone.

The RootsMagic narrative descendant report, as I compile it, includes an "every name index" and a "place name index."

This morning I ran a test for the family of Benjamin and Mary Edgell. There were 1,411 pages in the report.

I'm willing to discuss an exchange of information with members of the Edgell family, but there must be a willingness to share in order to obtain the information I have compiled.

Walter A. McDowell

Walter A. McDowell

I obtained the obituary of Walter A. McDowell who died on 14 Dec 2017 from a Facebook post. I worked on adding information about members of his family to my pafyoh file for several days.

I created an ancestor report for Walter, starting with a son.  The PDF report, with every name and place name indices, was 60-pages. Surnames include: Cain, Gorby, Johnson, Mason, McDowell, Pyles, Richmond, Ruckman.

From the same project I created a descendant report for the family of Perry Johnson and Elizabeth Long. The PDF report, with every name and place name indices, was 50-pages. Surnames include: Johnson, Lemasters, Mason, McDowell, Pyles, Richmond, Rine.

I uploaded the two reports to a folder on my Box account where access is limited. I am willing to share with others who agree to reciprocate.

Lemley and Headlee

The Lemley and Headlee families lived in the area of Mount Morris, Greene Co., PA.  There were a number of marriage between the two families

Eva Catherine Yoho, daughter of Johannas Yoho and Susanna Catherine Lau, married George Lemley, the son of David Lemley and an unknown mother.

Because of my interest in the Yoho family I also worked on the Lemley family for many years.

In the last couple of days there has been some discussion of the Lemley family on the Greene county Group on Facebook.

I'm working on a project to add information from FindAGrave to what I have about the Lemley and Headlee families.  At this point I have enough information to produce a 695-page descendant report for George Lemley and his descendants.

Ice Family

I did some work on two branches of the Ice family and posted short PDF descendant reports to the Ice family page on Facebook (closed group).

  • Alpheus Reynolds Ice
  • Isaac W. Ice
Some of the folks following the Ice family had posted short messages to the page which prompted my response.  I remain hopeful that people will respond to what I share by filling in some of the information or making suggestions for corrections. There isn't much of that activity going on.

Sharing Information

I'm concerned about how I share the information I have compiled.  I'd rather not share with folks I don't know or with those I know who don't reciprocate when I share information.

I'm of the opinion that there are as many rules about how to do genealogy as there are people doing genealogy.  Sharing information always opens the door to criticism.
Some say:
  • "It's all wrong."
  • "Send me everything you've got."
  • "You didn't cite enough sources."
  • "You didn't cite your sources in the approved manner."
  • "You have too much information about the living in your files."
  • "I don't want you to have any information in your files about my family."
  • "The dates you recorded are wrong."
  • "The places you recorded are wrong."
  • "That's not the name of this person."
Today I'm testing another method of sharing.  The idea is to share a PDF report on a limited basis, say 48-hours.  I can do this using the application Files To Friends. Files uploaded remain available for download for two days.

I'm sharing the URL to a 51-page Descendant Report for the family of Thomas and Mary Clegg here and also on my Henthorn Genealogy group on Facebook.  The link expires on 29 Jan 2015 at 10:38 a.m.

Richard Earl Henthorn

Did you know there are two people named Richard E. Henthorn who work on Henthorn Genealogy?

One is yours truly, Richard Edson Henthorn of Maryland.  The other is Richard Earl Henthorn of Florida. We both use the genealogy program, RootsMagic.

Richard Earl shared a copy of his genealogy file with me and I loaded it into my genealogy program. He also graciously offered to share some of the information from his file on the Internet and I agreed to prepare the Descendant Report in PDF format and to host the report on the Internet.

We are sharing a seven-generation report of 109-pages which includes End Notes, Name Index and Place Index. The report was limited to seven generations to reduce the possibility of including information about the living.

The reported is hosted on the Google Sites web space of yours truly.

David Conger & Rachel Willson

Here's a link to a PDF Descendant report I created today from my Conger genealogy file on RootsMagic.

Marriage Notes

I discovered that some of the records I'm importing from a GEDCOM file have Marriage Notes. This field is new to me.  None of the records I created with Personal Ancestral File (PAF) have this field.

I discovered that the Marriage Notes print just below the marriage data in the RootsMagic descendant report. That's good. For readability in the descendant reports I like to see a blank line before and after the Marriage Notes.  To make this happened I needed to add two blank lines before and after each Marriage Note. I don't understand why two lines are necessary. It doesn't matter, once I figured out that I needed to insert the blank lines.

John Henthorn Family

Today I uploaded the John Henthorn family, using a GEDCOM file, to the RootsMagic5 genealogy program on my laptop computer.  Prior to today this file resided on my desktop computer in a RootsMagic3 file.

Henthorn researchers believe that the first two Henthorns to arrive in the British colonies were brothers, James and John. The John Henthorn family is the smaller of the two.

My genealogy files were originally created with the LDS program, Personal Ancestral File (PAF) version 2.31, on a computer running the DOS operating system. Getting from that point to today entailed years of work and many computer disasters. It's a relief to once again have the data at my finger tips.

A Descendant report created from this file, with place and every name indices is 508 pages.
