My Google Blogs

My Google Blogs

For a long time I have maintained six blogs on Google. Two are used for genealogy, two for personal thoughts, and one for links to other webpages of interest and one for private note keeping.  The frequency of posting to the blogs is random.

Once you gain access to one of the blogs you can use the sidebar on the right to find links to the other public blogs.

If you are one of my Facebook friends you can access my About page where there are hot links to some of the blogs.

If you find what I post to be of interest you might want to learn how to set a swich to be notified when I create a post. It has been so long since I thought about this, I no longer recall how to do it.

Shutdown Of Henthorn Website - Google Group

Today, 20 March 2013, I sent a group Email to members of the Henthorn Website - Google Group announcing my intention to shutdown the group at the end of March.

Overtime Google modified how the group worked. In my opinion, at this time it is no longer serving our needs.

Until I shutdown the group I'll leave the link to the group in the sidebar of this page. Links to the group from my other three Google blogs were removed today.

FreePages Project

FreePages Project

This morning I posted a link to the Civil War Diary of William Lock Henthorn on the HenthornFamily Wiki.  I create a new page, Stories, on the Wiki where links to stories will be posted.  Look for Stories in the left hand column.  The Civil War Diary file resides in my FreePages space on RootsWeb.  When you view the webpage you'll discover that there is a navigation button at the bottom of the page which you can click to return to the Stories page on the wiki.

To assist in navigation from by Google blogs a link to the HenthornFamily Wiki was added to the sidebar "Links" area of the four blogs.

As time and my interest permit I plan to upload other files, created prior to the Fall of 2008, to the Internet thus making them available once again to anyone who's interested.

As always your feedback is welcome.

You can send me Email at: Dick.Henthorn@gmail.com

RootsMagic Version 5

Yesterday I ordered, downloaded and installed version five of the Roots Magic genealogy program on the new Toshiba laptop. Before yesterday there was no genealogy program on the new computer. In the days ahead I will be setting up the folders for the new program and moving the genealogy files from version three of Roots Magic on the old desktop computer. I'm looking forward to being able to once again share the work I did in the past. It's also going to be fun to try out some of the features of the program that I wasn't able to use in the past. If health and interest hold up in 2012 I should be able to accomplish some interesting genealogy projects. I'll keep you posted on my genealogy blogs.

Search Engine

Search Engine

A friend asked me if I know how to install a Search box on a website. When I had my website on AOL I installed the code to search the components of the website. I've forgotten how I did it. I think I used a free routine I got from Microsoft. I decided to do a Google search to see what I could find about free search engine options.

I discovered that Google has a Search gadget that can quickly and easily be installed on the Google blogs. I believe this feature can also be installed on websites

I tested the gadget on one of my four blogs and it worked "like a charm." I decided to install the search box at the top of the sidebar on all four of my Google blogs.

Enter your search terms in the search box and click to search. The results of your search will appear in the display window on the left side of the screen. Notice at the top of the window there is a line with three search options and an "X" in a little box:. The options are:

  • This Blog
  • Linked From Here
  • Links to Other Blogs and Points of Interest
  • "X" - (to close the search results window)

Try all three to see how they work. With each "hit" the URL for the blog where the cited item was found is displayed.

I hope the "Search" feature will help you move around in the blogs and make it easy to find anything you want to look at a second time.

Genealogy Happenings - 2009

Genealogy Happenings
2009

Introduction
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Several times in past years I've written a year-end Genealogy Happenings and sent it to my genealogy correspondents. This year I decided to write one and post it to my genealogy "news" blog.

Thanks to those friends and relatives interested in genealogy who kept in touch during the year.

Here's a report about my genealogy projects in 2009 and a few comments about what I might do in 2010.

Computer Disaster

During the year I had another computer disaster. This time my Dell laptop computer failed. As usual I wasn't prepared. Luckily I did have some of the information I didn't want to lose saved on a thumb drive.

I went back to using my old Gateway desktop computer. I connected to our new Verizon FIOS high speed Internet connection. The Gateway computer allowed me to continue to communicate via Email and to began some genealogy recovery projects.

Currently I don't have a printer connected to the working computer. I'm not certain that the printer will work if I do hook it up. Finding out is on my "to do" list, but not near the top.

RootsMagic

For many years I used the LDS genealogy program Personal Ancestral File (PAF) version 2.3.1. I still have a working copy of this program on my desktop computer. When the laptop failed I'd begun the process of converting my genealogy files to RootsMagic. RootsMagic evolved from the program Family Origins that I'd used for several years to load any GEDCOM files shared by other researchers. Since the computer incident I've loaded a copy of RootsMagic on the desktop computer. RootsMagic has the capability to produce very nice PDF files and pages for a website. If you'd like to try out a free version of this program you can download RootsMagic Essentials.

RootsMagic:

Personal Ancestral File 5.2

I also have a copy of the free LDS Windows genealogy program, Personal Ancestral File (PAF) version 5.2 installed on the desktop computer. I've only used this program enough to get an idea of how it works and what it can do.

Personal Ancestral File:

GEDCOM

In my opinion everyone should make GEDCOM copies of their genealogy files as part of their backup plan. GEDCOMs can be shared between researchers. And, they allow us to easily import our data into other genealogy programs. I have worked with the GEDCOM format long enough to understand it fairly well. Since my latest computer disaster I have been making edits to some of my GEDCOM files in order to improve the quality of data. After the edits are complete I can load the data into my genealogy program or share the GEDCOM with others or use it to produce genealogy reports with the Ancestral Author program.

Ancestral Author

I owned a copy of the Ancestral Author program and lost it when the laptop stopped working. I was able to download another copy of the program and install it on the desktop computer. This program reads GEDCOM files to produce genealogy reports in the PDF format which is perfect for sharing with others. In the last couple of months I learned more about how to use the program. In 2010 I plan to share these documents with some of the folks I know who are doing genealogy.

GenViewer Lite

I have a copy of the GenViewer Lite program installed on my computer. This is a free version of a program that can also read GEDCOM files. The program is very handy when you want to review the contents of a GEDCOM file without loading the data into your genealogy program. I'm thinking about buying the program because some of the capabilities are turned off in the free version.

Google Blogs

I have two genealogy blogs on Google. One is for "News" and other information. The other is for "Obituaries." I post to them whenever I have something ready. There are sidebar links from these two blogs to other things I post on the Internet.

Henthorn Genealogy Obits:
http://henthorn-website-obits.blogspot.com

Google Group

I maintain a "private" Google genealogy group. You must register with Google and then request that I grant access. There hasn't been much interest in the "group" so my posting there has been infrequent.

Henthorn Google Group:
http://groups.google.com/group/henthornwebsite

Google Site

In early December I announced the creation of a Google genealogy "site." This is also a "private" area. You must register with Google and then request that I grant access. There has been almost no interest shown in this so far. There are about fifty genealogy reports in PDF format available to anyone who gains access. In December I had a PDF Week on my "news" blog where I posted information about the available files. If I know you, and your area of genealogy interest, it's possible to request a particular file directly if you don't want to gain access to the "site." I can attach the file you want to an Email message.

Henthorn Google Site:

Delicious

I have posted the URLs to many of my favorite websites on the social bookmarking website, Delicious. People interested in genealogy or visiting Washington, DC might find visiting this area useful.

Delicious:

Society Membership

I continue to maintain a membership in the Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society; P.O. Box 641,Woodsfield, OH. 43793. I enjoy reading their very nice newsletter, The Navigator.

Their website URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohmccogs/

Plans for 2010

Currently I am no longer actively seeking to add information to my genealogy files. My interest for some time has been in sharing and publishing what I have collected and keyed over the years.

In 2010, as interest and health permit, I hope to share more of my genealogy information on the Internet and via Email attachments.

I'm going to investigate whether I can send PDF files to FedEx (Kinko's) for printing. This might be a good way to make paper copies for donation to some of the genealogy libraries.

I'll continue to share new information on my genealogy areas on the Internet. Little by little I have returned some of the information that used to be available on my AOL website to the Internet. I hope to continue this project.

Being able to produce and share genealogy reports in the PDF format is something genealogists have needed for years. In the new year I plan to make use of this capability to create and share more of the information that I gathered and keyed into my genealogy program over the years when I was working on genealogy. If we have been out of touch for a while I hope you will "touch base" so you can benefit in the sharing if I produce a report for a family in which you are interested.

Email Addresses

I now have two Email addresses. You can still reach me on AOL, but I prefer that you use my new Gmail address. I look at Gmail every day and skip signing on to AOL sometimes.

Preferred Gmail Address: dick.henthorn@gmail.com

What Is GeneaBloggers?

GeneaBloggers

People interested in genealogy are now creating and posting to their own genealogy blogs. If you wondered what blogging is all about and if you've ever considered whether blogging is something you might enjoy as part of the genealogy hobby I recommend you pay a visit to this site.

After you've set up your genealogy blog you can register it at GeneaBloggers and others will be able to quickly find your blog via the sites search box. You can find my genealogy "News" blog and the new "Congers Worldwide" blog with the search.

The link below will take you to the "About" page rather than the "Home" page. Use the buttons on the gray toolbar to move around the site.

If you want to start blogging I suggest looking at WordPress or Google Blogger. I'm using Google. Job Conger chose WordPress for "Congers WorldWide."

Have fun with your genealogy.

Do You Know A Conger? Honey & Quinine

Link to a July 4th, 2007 blog posting by Job Conger who, for a time, was the editor of the "Conger Confab" newsletter. Job writes about his relationship with noted Conger researcher and publisher, Maxine (Crowell) Leonard, and how he came to be the editor of the newsletter. There are some nice comments to Job's posting that may be of interest to Conger researchers.

Change, Upload, Discovery

Shari, one of my friends in genealogy, suggested that I consider making some changes in the sidebar organization on my Google blogs. I decided to move the Links box to the top of the screen and my Profile box to the bottom. I also set the colors for the Followers box to make the text more readable. Thanks Shari for caring enough to make some suggestions.

Deceased researcher, Maxine (Crowell) Leonard published the two-volume "The Conger Family of America." She was also the editor/publisher of "The Conger Confab." When I worked at The Library of Congress I discovered that she had donated the two-volume set and copies of the "Confabs" to the library. Later I found a list of libraries that have a copy of Volume One along with the names of the donors. Yesterday I returned this page of information to the Internet. It had been part of my website on AOL.

Thomas Lambert, another friend in genealogy, prepared a 61-page document about the Atkinson - Lippincott families of Monroe county, Ohio which he posted to the Internet. It's been there for some time. I just noticed it yesterday and posted a link to this blog. He gives credit for co-authorship to: himself, Robert Guilinger, Richard Henthorn and Gary Chesney. We all corresponded and exchanged information several years ago. Anyone interested in these Monroe county families owes a debt of gratitude to Thomas for his work.

Who Reads This Blog?

I wonder if there is a way to install a visitor counter on Google blogs? That could be very handy. Without a counter or some feedback there is no way to tell if anyone is reading what's posted on a blog.

If you visited, feel free to add a comment to let me know whether you found anything of interest. I'd appreciate the feedback.

I'm trying to encourage myself to get busy posting to the two Google genealogy blogs I created and the Google genealogy group I created.

Last Two Days

There is transcendent power in a strong intergenerational family. An effectively interdependent family of children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins can be a powerful force in helping people have a sense of who they are and where they came from and what they stand for. (Stephen R. Covey, Daily Reflections for Highly Effective People, October 29)

LAST TWO DAYS

Please be aware that on October 31st AOL will discontinue support for the genealogy website I have maintained on their service for many years. If there is something on the website that you'd like you should either print it or save a copy of the webpage file either today or tomorrow.

This blog, Henthorn Genelaogy News, is provided by Google. I'll continue to post here from time to time as I decide what I want to do next with my interest in genealogy.

Thanks again to everyone who shared information and support over the years.

Mr. Dickie's New Google Blogs

For a few months I have been keeping a personal journal (Mr. Dickie's Blog) on Google. I've been pleased with how the service works.
I announced earlier that AOL will discontinue Journal support on October 31, 2008. Google agreed to move AOL journals to their service. They created an easy procedure to facilitate the transfer.

I'm pleased to announce that I have successfully moved my three AOL journals to Google. As of October 21st I will no longer post new information to any of the AOL journals. Certain housekeeping tasks remain to be accomplished before the three new Google blogs will be configured to my satisfaction. Please be patient as I go through that process.

I'm thankful that Google was willing to support AOL users by providing support for our journals.

My four Google blogs are as follows:

Personal Blog:
http://mrdickiesblog.blogspot.com/

Arrow Prayers:
http://arrowprayers.blogspot.com/ (976 entries)

Henthorn Genealogy News:
http://henthorn-website-news.blogspot.com (130 entries)

The End

AOL recently announced that they will discontinue support of private websites, AOL Hometown, and journals as of 31 Oct 2008. This is probably another sign of the ultimate demise of AOL as an Internet powerhouse.

This announcement will impact me personally. For many years I have maintained the Henthorn Genealogy Website in free space provided by AOL. I've also been posting to my Arrow Prayers journal and several others. I estimate that there have been over 27,000 visits to the genealogy homepage since I added a visit counter.

I'll probably create an Arrow Prayers blog on Google. I don't plan to move any of the prayers from the AOL journal archive to the new blog.

I don't know what I will do about the genealogy information. I suggest that if there is anything you want you either print out the information or make a copy of the file on your own computer prior to October 31st.

I currently have a personal blog on Google. If you are interested in keeping track of what I am doing please read the blog postings from time to time. After October 31st this will be the best place to find out what I decided to do.

Mr. Dickie's Blog: http://mrdickiesblog.blogspot.com/

Thanks to everyone who shared information and encouragement during the years that AOL provided this service. I hope you found something of interest from time to time.

Taking A Break

I'm taking a break from posting to this blog for a few days. Look for something new after May 22, 2008.

In the meantime I hope you can find something I already posted that will interest you.

BTW if you have something interesting you'd like to share with others send me an Email to tell me about it. If it's something I like about one of the families I have worked on I can post it to the blog.

Henthorn Website News

Welcome to Henthorn Website News!!!!!

The purpose of this journal is to provide a place where I can post news, articles and comments about Henthorn Genealogy.

For a long time I have been wanting to find a way that would allow me to quickly and easily post "news" and other information about my genealogy activities. I think that using this journal (blog) is the answer.

Anyone interested in the latest news will be able to quickly come here to find out what I had on my mind recently.

Communication can be two-way because readers are allowed to post comments.

Let's try it out together to determine how it works and if it will be something useful. You can also send me Email if you want to comment that way.
