Using Find A Grave Cemetery IDs

Find A Grave assigns each cemetery an ID number. Currently there isn't a way to search on a known cemetery ID.

When I asked about this on the Find A Grave Facebook page I was provided with a tip that will be very useful.  You can go directly to a cemetery by adding the ID number to the URL for cemeteries.

For example, I've been working with the cemetery assigned the ID number 212241. Here's a link to the cemetery using that ID number.

Senecaville, Guernsey Co., OH, Salem Baptist Church Cemetery

Here's what the URL looks like:
https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/212241

So, if you know the ID number of some other cemetery, just replace "212241" with your ID of interest and you can go directly to that cemetery.

Which reminds me of another tip, that I came up with on my own. In the RootsMagic place name list you can record information about a place. When I obtain cemetery details from someone else or from Find A Grave I like to record that information in the Place List "text" field. I'm going to try to form the habit of recording the cemetery ID number as part of that information. This will help me when I want to quickly go to a particular cemetery on Find A Grave.

Here's what I recorded in the Place List text field for the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Note: 

This cemetery is called, Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Senecaville, Guernsey Co., OH on FindAGrave. Catharine (Foreaker) Fedorchak) in her Foreaker genealogy mentions it at least a dozen times as, Salem Baptist Cemetery and on page, 4b, lists the location as Richland Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.

Researcher, Richard E. Henthorn also believes it is located in Richland Twp., Guernsey Co., OH and as of Jan 2017 was called Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Updating Burial Month & Year

I like to include the burial month and year with cemetery place name information.  I imported records, shared by others, that didn't include this information.  That is to say, the place and name of the cemetery was provided without date information.

I'm working on a project with my Yoho file to extrapolate the month and year from the death information and add it to the burial information.

I'm able to find the problem records using the RootsMagic "Find" command.

I search for:
Burial date is blank and
Burial place is "not" blank.

It's a tedious process that will take quite a few days to complete.  The result will be better looking reports and improve reports of burial information.

Do Websites Have The Right to Display Tombstone Photographs?

Do websites have a right to photograph graves? | This is Grimsby:

If you do genealogy or write family history there's always a chance you are going to step on someone's toes and get your nose flatten.  The ease with which we can share information on the Internet has increased the possibility of offending others.  This webpage briefly discusses the issue of taking tombstone photographs and displaying them on the Internet.

Another issue that could be included in the discussion is what cemetery records will be available after hoodlums vandalize many of the cemeteries in the country.

This afternoon I uploaded YOHOCEM.HTM to MyBox. This is a report I created about twelve years ago of Yoho Burials - with Cemetery Names Identified. There are over 420 burials listed. The report could be useful if you plan a cemetery visit or if you don't know where someone was buried.

Place Name Order

Place Name Order

Here's how I entered cemetery names in my genealogy records.

City/Town Name, County Name followed by "Co.," State Abbreviation, Cemetery Name


You might ask the question, "Why did you enter the cemetery name last, rather than first?" The reason I do this is because in a sorted place name list I want to see the names of all of the cemeteries in a particular geographic location together in the list.

For example in my Conger file, in the case of Cameron, Ohio, I used four place names. Here's how they look in a sorted place name listing.

Cameron, Monroe Co., OH, Atkinson Cemetery
Cameron, Monroe Co., OH, New Cameron Cemetery
Cameron, Monroe Co., OH, Old Cameron Cemetery

Did I make my point? If I'd entered the cemetery names first the four place names would have appeared in the place name list in four different locations, in the "A," "C," "N," and "O" parts of the listing.

Counties Count

Often when genealogy information is shared I run into a problem with place names. The person who first recorded the name of a place where a life event occurred didn't write down the county name. The result is that we really don't know where the person was living at the time of the event. This is because in some states the same place names were used more than once. It's bad enough when two places in the same state have the same name. Imagine the confusion when there are more than two.

Another problem with place names comes up when a county and a town in that county have the same name. How am I supposed to know whether the person who shared the information was referring to a town within a county or to the county?

When I first started doing genealogy I didn't take this problem into account. I've come to regret that. In recent years I've been working to correct the problem. I decided I'd use the abbreviation, "Co.," after the county name. For example: Bellevue, Sarpy Co., NE or just Sarpy Co., NE when I don't know the town name.

This week I have been editing the place names in my RootsMagic Conger family file. Yesterday I complete a first pass through the place name file associated with this family.

The place name edit project reminded me of another place name issue. Often when cemetery names were recorded, and shared, the person who wrote down the cemetery name failed to include the town and county name. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to determine where the cemetery is located. Another cemetery name issue is failure to accurately record the cemetery name. This probably happens because many cemeteries don't have name signs.

Notes for Peter YOHO (My RIN-463)

PARENTS: Johannas Yoho and Susanna Catherine Lau

BIRTH: The Ancestral File lists the birth as, 1745, probably Winchester, PA.

MILITARY: Revolutionary War Service
According to Denver Yoho he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He resided in Washington Co., PA, now Greene Co., PA, during the war. He served in First Battalion, Washington Co., PA Militia. In 1782, he was recruited in Whiteley and Greene Townships in what is now Greene Co., PA, under Captain John Guthrey (Gethery). This service was used by DAR member Elizabeth (Carson) Kramer in her application. (PA Archives, Series VI, Vol. 2, pp 18-19 and 271).

MILITARY: The Indian Wars - By Denver Yoho - April 1995
We have records of at least four, and possibly five, Yoho ancestors who served as soldiers during the Indian Wars and the American Revolution, including George Yoho, Peter Yoho, John Yoho, Henry Yoho and Jacob Yoho. These five men are believed to be five of the sons of Johannas Yoho (born 1712 and died circa 1795) and Susanne Catherine (Lau) Yoho (born circa 1714). Following is information and records evidencing my conclusions relating to the service of these men in the Indian Wars.

Peter Yoho, who was born in 1745 and died in 1823, also served in the Revolutionary War. Peter died prior to the legislation that was passed rewarding Revolutionary War soldiers for their service. Thus, military records for Peter Yoho are scarce. In the Pennsylvania Archives Series VI, Vol. 2, pages 18, 19, 271, the following in listed: "Year 1782 First Battalion, Washington County. Recruited in Whiteley and Greene Townships (now Greene County) a few miles from Dunkard. John Guthrey, Captain. Among the privates were listed Peter Yoho and Henry Yoho. These men also served tours with Captain John Guthrey and Captain Samuel Swindler, Captain John Minor, Captain Cecil Davis and Captain John Shipman. Service on the western frontier was not continuous. Soldiers would be discharged at the end of an emergency and called back when an emergency would occur." Also, listed in the DAR Patriot Index 1966 printing, page 768, is the following: "Peter Yoho born 1745, died 1817-28, MXPvt. PA."

The DAR PATRIOT INDEX lists two men by the name of Yoho who had Revolutionary Service: Henry Yoho, born 1752, died 1845, wife, Catherine, Private, Spy, Virginia and Peter Yoho, b. circa 1745, died in 1817 also a private from PA.

Henry Yoho applied for a pension from Monongalia Co., VA when he was 82 years old, put Peter never applied for one. However, both Henry and Peter show up on the First Battalion, Wasington Co., [PA] Militia recruited in Whiteley, Greene and Dunkard Townships in what is now Greene Co., PA in 1782. Ref. PA Archives, Series VI, Vol. 2, pp. 18-19, pp. 271.

I sent for the pension file of Henry Yoho and found it interesting reading. File No. S-7996. Henry was placed on the roll of the Wheeling Agency at the rate of Forty Dollars per Annum under the law of 7 Jun 1832. His application reveals that he was born in Virginia about 18 miles from Winchester. He did not recollect the year, but he stated he was 85 years old. His father's family moved to Western Virginia when he was 11 years old and he resided there ever since. He first served in the Revolution in a company commanded by Lieut. Samuel Singles who was stationed on Whiteley Creek, now in Monongalia Co., [WV] at the house of a settler named Duncan. The Company was composed of 18 men, some drafted, although he had volunteered. They marched to Garrett's fort on Whiteley Creek and remained there ...

According to the "History of the Panhandle West Virginia," "Old Peter Yoho settled on Fish Creek, near Graysville, Marshall Co., VA/WV in 1792."

LAND:
Ohio Co., VA Deed Book 7, page 208, June 5, 1804, Peter Yoho bought 170 acres of land, at Gully Bottom, Fish Creek, near (Graysville, WV) from Abijah McClain for $502.00. This land adjoined the land of his brother, Henry Yoho, who bought 192 acres on Fish Creek from Abijah McClain, June 5, 1804, Deed Book 7, page 205, for the sum of $525.00.

LAND: Peter Yoho Obtains Land from Abijah McClain - 5 Jun 1804 This indenture made this 5th day of June Anno Domini 1804 between Abijah McClain and Pamela, his wife, of Green County and State of Pennsylvania of the one part and Peter Yoho of Ohio County in the State of Virginia of the other part

Witnesseth that the said Abijah and Pamela for and in consideration for five hundred and ten dollars to them in hand paid by the said Peter Yoho before the ensealing and delivery hereof the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge (and ?? the said Peter) have granted bargained sold ? released and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain sell ? release and confirm to the said Peter Yoho part of a tract of land situate in Ohio County in the State of Virginia on the waters of Fish Creek called Gully Bottom

DEATH:
Peter Yoho died in 1823 in Ohio Co., VA in the area of what is now known as Graysville, Marhall, WV. The date, 21 Oct 1823, is the date the estate was settled. It is thought that he and his wife are probably buried in the Peter Yoho Cemetery, established by his son Henry, near Graysville, Marshall Co., WV.


PROBATE:
Estate Settlement, Ohio Co., VA/WV, 21 Oct 1823, Book 3, pp 273-278. The 170 acres of land was bought by his son, Henry Yoho, Jr., from the other heirs (brothers and sisters) on March 24, 1828, Ohio Co. Deed Book 14, pp 202-206 (9 shares), and the 10th share on Sept. 26, 1834, Ohio Co., Deed Book 19, pp 379-380. There were 11 children, and the 11th share went to Henry Yoho, Jr. as his inheritance right.

CEMETERY: Where are the Yoho Cemeteries?
In a number of genealogy documents about the Yoho family of West Virginia it has been difficult to determine in which Yoho family cemetery people are buried. This problem occurs because there are a number of Yoho cemeteries and any of them can be referred to as the "Yoho Cemetery." In the files of Richard E. Henthorn and T. Vernon Anderson each West Virginia cemetery has been given a unique name which includes the first name of the male Yoho on whose land the cemetery was established. Adam Henthorn Synopsis

Adam Henthorn, a son of James Henthorn II, the original Monroe Co., OH settler, probably came to Monroe Co., OH in 1798 with his parents and two brothers, James and William D. Some claim that he does not appear on the 1820 census under his own name.

Census: 1820 shows families headed by: Adam Henthorne, over 45 years of age; John Henthorne, over 45 years of age; James Henthorne, over 45, but he also had four children under 10; and Margaret Henthorne over 45. Margaret had children who were born between 1804-1810.

He apparently did not purchase any land, but evidently shared with his brothers the land his father had settled in 1798.

Record 3, page 130, Monroe Co., OH. James Henthorn vs. Adam Henthorn by Wm. C. Walton. said Adam Henthorn is not a resident of the county as he verily believes. Isaac Baldwin is indebted to Adam in sum of $1085. Adam owes James for work, labor, goods, moneys, etc. They tried to collect Adam's debt from Baldwin to pay James, and lessend the sum Baldwin owed Adam.

His tombstone, on a brick vault that he had built, in the Harter Cemetery shows he was born in 1780. Another extraction done at the same cemetery indicates that he d. 4 Apr 1867, age 87 years.

Adam Henthorn's Will, Copy

This last Will and Testament of Adam Henthorn of the town of Baresville, Monroe
County and State of Ohio.

In the name of god I Adam Henthorn considering the uncertainty of this mortal
life and now being of sound mind and memory. I, Adam Henthorn do make and
publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows:

Item 1st to wit; All my just depts doctor bills, funeral expenses to be paid
out of any money that may be under my control, at the time of my death or as
soon as it may be convenient by my legal agent or my wife Susanna should she be
then living or the person that my wife may appoint to attend to her businefs
with the same power that she has.

Item 2nd I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Susanna Henthorn, all my
estate, real, personal or mixed, with that of any money that may be at my
control, at the time of my death, also all notes, books and book accounts, she
be for the use and support of her my said wife Susanna, during her natural
life, with full power to collect debts pay out money, as she may think proper
for her support or she may appoint an agent to do her businefs for her.

Item 3rd It is my will all my estate to remain in the hands of my sife, should
she live longer than myself, without any appraisement of property, or
administration on my estate.

Item 4th I give and bequeath the one third of all my estate real, personal and
mixed with that of any money that may be at my control at my death with full
power to dispose of it as she may think proper after both of our deaths our
personal property she may sell at any time after my death our real estate to be
sold, within one year after both of our deaths, at private sale, if the estate
is sold on payments, the money so collected may be paid out to the heirs as it
is collected, both of my heirs, and that of my wife's that are named in our
last Wills.

Item 5th I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ellener Morgan two hundred
dollars out of my two thirds

Item 6th The balance of my two thirds of the whole estate that we may die
possessed of, is to be divided as follows, I give and bequeath, Nephew John J.
Henthorn, Martha his daughter, Charles and Washington his two youngest sons, to
them to have the one third of my two thirds, it to be equally divided between
them four here mentioned. I give and bequeath unto my Nephew Nimrod Henthorn
the one third of my two thirds of the estate that we may be possessed of, also
I give and bequeath unto Cassie Ann Wife of Adam Henthorn the same amount that
is given to Nimrod for the use and support of her family's comfort and support,
the same, any of our friends that may desire to be put in the vault with us if
there are room may do so.

In testimony thereof I do revoke all former Wills by me made. In testimony
whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of February in the
year of our Lord 1867.

I do appoint Samuel Hofer and M. Mason to settle up our estate after we are
both dead, with full power to sell and make good deeds for any of our real
estate that we may be possessed of at both our deaths, with full power to
collect any of the debts thas [sic] has or may accrue, with the same power that
I would of had if still living, all the interliving was before signing.

This day came into Court Samuel Hofer and produced an instrument of writing
purporting to be a copy of the last Will and Testament of Adam Henthorn, late
of Monroe County, Ohio, deceased, and the Court being satisfied that said Will
had been duly admitted to probate in the Probate Court of said County, and that
the original Will with the record thereof, had been destroyed by fire in the
burning of the office of this Court with its contents on the 13th day of June
1867. It is therefore ordered by the Court that the copy of said Will be filed
and admitted to record in this Court and recorded therein, and notice of such
record be published in the Spirit of Democracy for three months, as required by
law.

PROBATE: Will of Daniel Kyger

I Daniel Kyger of the County of Vermilion and State of Illinois now haveing perfect mind and memory considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and the certainty of death do now make and declare this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following to wit:

1st that all my just debts be paid

2- I give unto my daughter Nancy Suel C- Briggs one dollar

3- I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Kyger thirty-five acres of land of the North end of the East half of the South East quarter of Section 22- and also twenty acres of the North end of the East half of the South West quarter of Section 22 - in Range Eleven W - township No. Eighteen North

4th I give unto my son John Kyger one dollar

5th I give unto my daughter Sidney Walton one dollar

6- I give unto my son James Kyger fifty dollars

7- I give unto my son Henry Kyger one hundred dollars

8- I give unto my daughter Brooky Morgan sixty dollars

9- I give unto my daughter Eliza Sheets one dollar

10th- I give unto my daughter Maryan Kirkpatrick one dollar

11- I give unto my daughter Marmaduke seventy dollars

12- I give unto my son Dan Kyger one hundred and fifty dollars

13th I give and bequeath unto son Adam Kyger forty acres of land of the South end of the East half of the South East quarter of Section 22 - also forty acres of the south end of the West half of the South East quarter of Section twenty-two also sixty acres of the South end of the East half of the South West quarter of Section twenty-two all in Range Eleven West township No. 18 N

14th I give unto my daughter Manurve Kyger one hundred and fifty dollars

Now whereas I have given unto my daughter Hannah Kyger and my son Adam Kyger certain tracts of land my will and wish is for them to pay unto my Executor the sum of five hundred and eighty five dollars that is Hannah to pay one hundred and ninety-five dollars and Adam three hundred and ninety dollars which will enable my executor to pay all the sums I give unto my other named children my will and wish is for Hannah and Adam to pay this money yearly each in proportion to their sum that is one hundred dollars a year until paid, my wish is for all my personal property to be at the disposal of my wife Anna Kyger

I also appoint my son John Kyger my Executor to this my will now revoking all former wills by me made Signed and Sealed and Executed in the presence of Jacob Brazelton and William Stowers on this 7th day of March in the year of our Lord AD - 1837

Adam Henthorn

BIRTH: 1880 West Virginia census record for Daniel Henthorn, son of Adam, lists the birthplace of his mother and father as, PA PA.

QUESTION: Was the place of birth, MD, as listed by some, or PA as listed in the 1880 census record of son, Daniel?

LAND: Adam Henthorn bought land from Daniel Kyger. Daniel was the husband of Ann Henthorn, daughter of James, the second. Adam died without receiving a deed for the property. The Deed Book was burned extensively when the court house in Woodsfield, OH burned in 1868. The following extract was copied from the burned volume by, Leila Francy of Toronto, OH.

"28 Mar 1818 Acknowledged 23rd day of .... 1832.
Daniel Kyger of Monroe Co., OH to Adam Henthorn, then of said Co. and State, but since deceased - - which the said Adam Henthorn agreed by a certain article of .... which said sum when paid was to be for said purchase and the said Daniel Kyger covenanted him, Adam Henthorn now deceased on said payment to make said Henthorn a good and sufficient deed for the promises which afterward to witt; said Adam Henthorn did ... on the 18th day depart this life without obtaining or receiving the deed so stipulated ... lawful issue and heirs; Elizabeth Henthorn, Margaret Henthorn who is intermarried with one Joseph Ollum, Joseph Henthorn ...[M]ary Henthorn who is intermarried with one Daniel Clark, ...orn, Ann Henthorn, Daniel Henthorn, Jane Henthorn and Andrew Henthorn, children and heirs as aforesaid this indenture between. RESIDENCES-CEMETERY: Adam and Nancy Henthorn lived in Monroe Co., OH and are
both buried in Rutter Cemetery, which is located west of Cameron, Monroe Co.,
OH on Route 78.

June term, 1832 - June 25:

Upon application the court appoints Wm. C. Walton guardian of Anna Henthorne, aged 10 years on the 18 Feb 1832; Jane Henthorn, aged 8 years on the 14 July 1832; and Daniel Henthorne, aged 4 years on 18 Feb. 1832, Andrew Henthorn, age 16. Heirs of Adam Henthorn, decd. Bond of $600 given by Asail Booth, Daniel Kyger and Richard Cain, securities.

- June term, 1833:

Upon application the court accepts the bond of David Sycks as security of Wm. C. Walton, as the guardian of the heirs of Adam Henthorne, who was appointed and chosen guardian of the several minor heirs of Adam Henthorne by order of the court at the June terms, 1832, in place of Daniel Kyger who is mentioned in said order of the security of said guardian.

After his death there were several suits over the estate, which apparently went on for many years. The suits are described in the notes of the some of the parties to the suits.

Adam Henthorne Article

Adam Henthorne, who lived in Salem Township, was another 1812 soldier in the Company of John Howell and his name appears on the muster roll from September 3, 1813 until January 3 and March 16, 1814. He was a son of the Rev. Soldier James Henthorne, [Note: This is not correct. He was a grandson of James Henthorn and son of Adam. REH] and died in August 1830, aged 49 years, so was born about 1781. He is buried in Rutter Cemetery in Salem Township, along Sunfish Creek. His wife was Nancy and she died in September, 1847, aged 61 years, and is buried in this same cemetery.

The court records in 1848 give the heirs of Adam Henthorne as: Eli Baldwin and Anne, his wife; Jane Henthorne, a resident of Virginia; Joseph Henthorne, Elizabeth Henthorne, Andrew Henthorne, Margaret Ullom, Phebe Henthorne; Daniel Henthorne, and Mary Clark and Daniel her husband. Mary Clark and Annie Baldwin are both buried in the Rut[t]er Cemetery too -- Mary Clark, consort of Daniel, died May 14, 1851, aged 46 years, 6 months and Annie Baldwin, wife of Eli died March, 1861, 39 years, 11 months and 2 days.
