Lemley Genealogy

Lemley Genealogy

I ran a test report to see how much information I have compiled about the Lemley family.

With an every name index and a place name index I can currently create a Descendant Report of 1309 pages.

Lemley and Headlee

The Lemley and Headlee families lived in the area of Mount Morris, Greene Co., PA.  There were a number of marriage between the two families

Eva Catherine Yoho, daughter of Johannas Yoho and Susanna Catherine Lau, married George Lemley, the son of David Lemley and an unknown mother.

Because of my interest in the Yoho family I also worked on the Lemley family for many years.

In the last couple of days there has been some discussion of the Lemley family on the Greene county Group on Facebook.

I'm working on a project to add information from FindAGrave to what I have about the Lemley and Headlee families.  At this point I have enough information to produce a 695-page descendant report for George Lemley and his descendants.

Rudolph Lemley and Jemima Pyles

Some information about Rudolph Lemley and Jemima Pyles was shared on the Greene county, PA page on Facebook.  There was a scan of a newspaper article about Jemima and a one-page scan of a page of typed genealogy. I've been working on this family for a couple of days.  I had the wife's surname as, Piles.  There is some good information about members of this family on FindAGrave.  They lived around Mount Morris, Greene county, Pennsylvania and Pentress, Monongalia county, West Virginia.

FindAGrave

Today I decided to create a FindAGrave account.

I noticed some errors. For example: one record showed the birth and death month of an infant as, 17 Aug of some year.  When I looked at the photograph of the tombstone the day and month was clearly, 7 Aug.  In another case, the middle name of the father was, Evert and the middle name of a son was Everet. I want to be able to quickly communicate with the person who posted when I notice a problem.

I'm working on extracting some information about the West Virginia families of: Hostutler and Wildman.  There are links to Richmond, Yoho and Lemley.

George Lemley & John Otho West

Today I added a descendant chart for George Lemley & John Otho West to the Lemley section of the Collateral Families page on the HenthornFamily Wiki. To the same area I also added a link to an Ahnentafel chart for Rufus Lemuel West. There is a connection to the Yoho family.

Several years ago this information was shared by Samuel Lee West of Benson, AZ. Thanks to Mr. West for his willingness to share.

George and Eva Catherine (Yoho) Lemley

This morning I uploaded, Lemley.htm to MyBox on the Box.net. This is a six generation descendant chart for the family of George and Eva Catherine (Yoho) Lemley in the HTML format, suitable for viewing with your web browser. For many years this webpage was available on my AOL website. After making a few changes I'm happy to be able to make it available again to those who have access to the appropriate folders on MyBox.

The file resides in the Yoho folder which is one of the folders in the Marshal-Wetzel-WV folder on MyBox.

West, Samuel and Rebecca Henderson

This morning I uploaded a 51-page PDF genealogy about the family of Samuel West and Rebecca Henderson to the Marshall-Wetzel-WV folder on My Box. Samuel and Rebecca were related (cousins) prior to marriage.

The report includes some information about George Lemley and Catharine Yoho as well as about John Otho West and Sarah Lemley.

Some information in this file was shared by Samuel Lee West. I regret that I am no longer in touch with Mr. West.

Access to information in My Box is by invitation.

He married Catharine Yoho, and many of their descendants moved south to become prominent citizens of Monongalia County. (Source: "The Monongalia Story" by Earl L. BIOGRAPHY: George Lemley
The most complete record of the Lemley Family has been sent to us by Mr. Fred Lemley, an attorney at Fairmont, W.Va. There are some questions still unanswered as to the origin of the pioneer George Lemley. One tradition states he served as a soldier at Fort Pitt, leaving the Army prior to the close of the Revolution, to settle in the vicinity of Fort Jackson. There he is said to have traded a great coat for a tract of land. Family tradition also says he was born in Germany about 1741, though it is possible he belonged to the family of that name that were early settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and may have been at Fort Pitt with the troops from that section. He or his family may have settled for a time in Salsford Township, Philadelphia County. It is definite that he served a tour of duty with Captain James Archer's Company of Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia in 1782, and a few years later got warrants for two tracts of land in what is now Whiteley Township, Greene County, and settled on a branch of Whiteley Creek, near the Franklin Township line. It appears that he was twice married, the second wife being Catherine Yoho. He died in Greene County on June 1, 1813, and his estate was probated June 29, 1813.
BIOGRAPHY:
George Okey was born in Monroe county, Ohio, April 5, 1816. He is the son of Woodman Okey and Catherine Lemley. They both died in Monroe county.

Mr. Okey's wife was Rachel A. Mann, whom he married in Bethel township, April 6, 1876. Mrs. Okey was born in Belmont county, September 14, 1837. Her father's name was David Mann, and her mother's Sarah Johnson. They both died in Belmont county, Ohio.

Mr. Okey was engaged in the war of the rebellion; served in the 4th California Volunteer Infantry. His son was also in the service, in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Mr. Okey was sheriff in Marshall county, California for twenty-five years.

Mr. Okey's son, Emanuel, was taken prisoner and kept in Andersonville until he was nearly starved to death before he was exchanged. He was blown up on one of the transports, and thrown into the water; he tried to swim ashore, but was so blinded by the explosion that he could not reach there and was captured.

George Okey, the subject of this sketch, was in the Indian part of the rebellion, and was most of the time in Arizona; went to California in 1850, prospecting. He found some of the best mining country in the State.

He has a farm in Monroe county of about eighty acres.

The first wife was Elizabeth Rucker, daughter of John Rucker and Sarah Jenning. Their children were: Catherine, born in 1841; Woodman, in 1845; Charlie, in 1846; Emanuel, October 12, 1837, died 1865.

Mr. George Okey, the subject of this sketch, in politics is a Republican and a true patriot to this country -- while he mourns the loss of his son was yet willing to lose all to save the government. He has traveled quite extensively, and still likes Ohio, the place of his birth. Has always been a hard-working man, and has become somewhat afflicted. Has seen all of the trials and vicissitudes of pioneer life in Monroe county for about fifty-five years.

Occupation, farmer and stock raiser.
