Search Engine

A friend asked me if I know how to install a Search box on a website. When I had my website on AOL I installed the code to search the components of the website. I've forgotten how I did it. I think I used a free routine I got from Microsoft. I decided to do a Google search to see what I could find about free search engine options.

I discovered that Google has a Search gadget that can quickly and easily be installed on the Google blogs. I believe this feature can also be installed on websites

I tested the gadget on one of my four blogs and it worked "like a charm." I decided to install the search box at the top of the sidebar on all four of my Google blogs.

Enter your search terms in the search box and click to search. The results of your search will appear in the display window on the left side of the screen. Notice at the top of the window there is a line with three search options and an "X" in a little box:. The options are:

This Blog
Linked From Here
Links to Other Blogs and Points of Interest
"X" - (to close the search results window)

Try all three to see how they work. With each "hit" the URL for the blog where the cited item was found is displayed.

I hope the "Search" feature will help you move around in the blogs and make it easy to find anything you want to look at a second time.

Focused Search

I've been practicing with a way of entering search terms when I'm using Google search. I also tried it with Lycos. This method focuses the search on a particular website. It's very useful if you are doing genealogy.

You can use this search string to find all of the "Henthorn" occurrences on GenForum. To the left of the word "site:" enter "Henthorn" followed by a space and to the right of "site:" with no space enter the abbreviated (I leave off the "http://www".) URL of the website you want to search.

For Example:
Henthorn site:genforum.com

site:mysite.verizon.net (webpages on Verizon)

site:home.comcast.net (webpages on ComCast)

site:genealogy.com

site:genforum.com

site:tripod.com (webpages on tripod.com)

site:ancestry.com

site:facebook.com (to see how many folks with your surname are on FB)

Search Engines

There are more search engines than Google on the Internet. There's even a webpage that tracks search engines.

Today I posted twenty search engine bookmarks to Delicious. If you are interested in trying out other search engines go to Delicious and enter "Search" "Engine" or "SearchEngine." The link to my bookmarks on Delicious is the last line in the right-hand sidebar of Henthorn Genealogy News.

Search Engines

Google isn't the only search engine on the Internet. You might want to try some of the others. The results are quite different. Some search other search engines. Try using the same search words with several different search engines to see what I'm talking about.
