Lemley and Headlee

The Lemley and Headlee families lived in the area of Mount Morris, Greene Co., PA.  There were a number of marriage between the two families

Eva Catherine Yoho, daughter of Johannas Yoho and Susanna Catherine Lau, married George Lemley, the son of David Lemley and an unknown mother.

Because of my interest in the Yoho family I also worked on the Lemley family for many years.

In the last couple of days there has been some discussion of the Lemley family on the Greene county Group on Facebook.

I'm working on a project to add information from FindAGrave to what I have about the Lemley and Headlee families.  At this point I have enough information to produce a 695-page descendant report for George Lemley and his descendants.

George Lemley was a pioneer settler of Greene County, Pennsylvania, locating on "Lemley's Plain," along Whiteley Creek in 1784 and at his "Shiver-de-Frise" plantation along Dunkard Creek, just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, in 1794. He married Catharine Yoho, and many of their descendants moved south to become prominent citizens of Monongalia County. (Source: "The Monongalia Story" by Earl L. BIOGRAPHY: George Lemley
The most complete record of the Lemley Family has been sent to us by Mr. Fred Lemley, an attorney at Fairmont, W.Va. There are some questions still unanswered as to the origin of the pioneer George Lemley. One tradition states he served as a soldier at Fort Pitt, leaving the Army prior to the close of the Revolution, to settle in the vicinity of Fort Jackson. There he is said to have traded a great coat for a tract of land. Family tradition also says he was born in Germany about 1741, though it is possible he belonged to the family of that name that were early settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and may have been at Fort Pitt with the troops from that section. He or his family may have settled for a time in Salsford Township, Philadelphia County. It is definite that he served a tour of duty with Captain James Archer's Company of Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia in 1782, and a few years later got warrants for two tracts of land in what is now Whiteley Township, Greene County, and settled on a branch of Whiteley Creek, near the Franklin Township line. It appears that he was twice married, the second wife being Catherine Yoho. He died in Greene County on June 1, 1813, and his estate was probated June 29, 1813. John DEVAUL, a resident of Greene township, is engaged in farming, and is one of the old pioneers of Monroe county, having settled here in 1823. He was born near Waynesburg, Greene county, Pennsylvania, November 28, 1811. His parents were Conrad DEVAUL and Mary MC MANHAN, both now deceased. They came to this county in 1823.

Mr. DEVAUL'S wife is Elizabeth CONLEY, who was born in Greene township, Monroe county, May 22, 1825. They were married in Greene township, June 11, 1856. Mrs. DEVAUL'S parents, Isaac CONLEY and Elizabeth HICKMAN, came to Monroe county in 1823. The former died in 1853 and the later in 1865. Mr. DEVAUL'S elder brother, Conrad DEVAUL, served five years in the war of 1812.

Mr. John DEVAUL, the subject of this sketch, started out in life a poor boy, and by industry and economy has accumulated a liberal quantity of this world's goods. He is the possessor of 360 acres of valuable land, and never had a mortgage against any of it, and in all his business transactions never failed to come up to his contracts. He is a man of strictly temperate habits, never having taken a drink of spirituous liquors, or smoked or chewed tobacco. He is living at the mature old age of three score and ten.

He remained a widower seven years before he married a second time.

Mr. DEVAUL'S father came from Greene county, Pennsylvania, and settled in this township when it was a wilderness, there not being over twenty-five families in the township. He helped build the first school-house in the township. There were no roads here then, only bridle-paths through the woods. Mr. DEVAUL'S father entered eighty acres of land about half a mile west of the present site of Newcastle.

Mrs. DEVAUL'S parents, came from Greene county, Pennsylvania, and settled in this township when it was an unbroken forest. They entered land in the eastern part of the township, and went heartily into the work, built them a house and raised up their family of five sons and five daughters, who have since married off and sought homes elsewhere. Mrs. DEVAUL was born in this township, married on the same farm on which she was born, and has been a resident of the township for fifty-seven years, never having lived outside of it.

Mr. DEVAUL'S first wife was Elizabeth HENTHORNE, daughter of James and Elizabeth Rachel HENTHORNE. There were born of this marriage:

• Rebecca (Fisher), now a resident of Washington township, Monroe county;
• Conrad, a farmer in Green township;
• James, a resident of Green township, and a school-teacher by occupation;
• Perry, deceased at the age of three years;
• Simon J., a resident of Newcastle, and a physician by profession.

Mrs. DEVAUL died June 3, 1850.

Problem: Was Absolum Parsons the son of Vincent Parsons? Were they the
Parsons of Greene Co., PA? Can anyone fit Absolum into the family tree?

Problem: How many children did Vincent Parsons have?

MARRIAGE: York County, PA Historical Society, Parsons' Notes, File #5354. Vincent Parons of Warrington married before 08 Jul 1780 to Miriam Garretson. They were married by a hireling teacher. Warrington Monthly Meeting dated 7/8/1780. (Furnished by Claude R. Burton)


CHILDREN: Eloyce Trader lists three unnamed descendants, one with no date of birth, one with a date of birth of 1798, and the 3rd with a date of birth of 1800. Other researchers have suggested that there were sons, William and Peter, but listed no particulars about them.

AKA: Eloyce Trader reports: Vincent Parsons was on the tax list in York Co., PA in 1781, 1782, and 1783. His name is recorded as Pearson, Pierson, Person, and Parson.


BIOGRAPHY: It is not known just when Vincent Parsons moved to Washington, Co., (now Greene Co.,) PA. He was on tax lists in York county in 1781,82,83,84.

In 1800 he was located in Morris Twp., Greene County, (1800 census)

In 1810 he was still living in Morris Twp. It is possible that in 1820 he was living in the household of Jospeh Parsons in Morris Twp.

The Gorby books states, that Henry Parsons (presumably a son of Vincent) was born in 1785, probably in Greene county.

From census record analysis it was concluded that Vincent's wife probably died sometime between 1810 and 1820.

Vincent Parsons was involved in several land transactions in Greene Co., PA early in the nineteenth century. The latest record found involved Vincent Sr. and Al & Joseph Parson in a land transfer to John Mattix.

Vincent's surname was sometimes recorded as: Pearson, Parson, and in a few cases as Pierson and Person.

Vincent and Miriam Parsons were witnesses to a land transfer in York county in 1787 by Henry Parsons to David Jones. (Furnished by Claude R. Burton)
