Broken Links

This weekend I worked on a project to find and remove broken links on my genealogy Wiki and on this genealogy blog. In the process I sent out a couple of messages to friends to confirm they'd shut down their genealogy related websites.

The project reminded me. If you are working on genealogy and you find something of interest that you plan to come back to you'd better not count on it. I suggest downloading a copy of the information of interest.

While on the subject of broken links. If you see something, say something.  That is to say, if you notice a broken link on something I posted, please help me out by telling me about it.  Thanks.

Blogspot Backup

Blogspot Backup

Today I created five folders on my computer in My Documents for the purpose of storing backup files for my five blogs on Blogger. It was necessary to create a folder for each blog because when Blogspot creates the backup files all have the same name using the date of the backup.

Once the folders were in place the steps required to do the backup for each blog were relatively simple.

I can't remember when I last backed up the blogs or where I put the backups. This time I wrote a page of information about the process in my Steno notebook.

One way to approach this project is to use Personal Historian 2 from RootsMagic.  They offer a free version with some options turned off and a full-blown version for $29.95.  If anyone has used this program to document your family history I would be interested in feedback, which could be posted here.

When a person, working on genealogy, has the good fortune to find a diary or journal written by a family member they are very lucky. Have you considered leaving a record behind for your own family? Using your computer to keep a journal or blog is worth trying. Blogs or journals can be either public or private. Give thought to whether you will want to print your posts at some point. Some of the suggestions in the article might not be easy to print.

The article didn't mention using Google Blogger which I use for four public blogs and one private blog.

Are you working on genealogy?  Have you considered creating a blog and posting information about your projects?  There are many easy ways to do this.  I recommend trying either Google's - Blogger or WordPress.

Print Friendly

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a way to print the pages on my four Google blogs without including the Sidebar information?  Now there is a way, using the free Print Friendly application.

I've installed a Print Friendly button at the bottom of each page that appears on my blogs.  Clicking on the button will display the information without the Sidebar.  From the Print Friendly page you can select whether you want to Print the page or get a PDF of the page.  You can chose to Email the page to yourself or someone else.  You can remove the images.

Here's a link to a short video that will further acquaint you with this very handy tool.  Please note that the video mentions installing Print Friendly, ignore that part.  I've already done the installation.  All you need to do to use the application is click on the "Print Friendly" button at the bottom of each blog posting you want to print.

New Obituary Postings

New Obituary Postings

Some time has passed since I last did much posting to my blog, Henthorn Genealogy Obits. Today I posted eleven items which could be salvaged from a Zip Disk with very little work on my part. I think I first shared these obituaries on my AOL website in the year 2000. They haven't been available on the Internet since the end of 2008.

There are thirty-six additional pieces available on the same Zip Disk. As time and interest permit I'll post the rest of them to the obituary blog.

Salvaging My Genealogy Work

When AOL dropped free website support at the end of 2008 it was a disaster as far as sharing my genealogy information was concerned. Since then I have tried several other ways to share. I created two Google blogs: Henthorn Genealogy News and Henthorn Genealogy Obits. More recently I opened an account on Box.net where I share information in MyBox with collaborators to whom I grant access. The blogs are public and MyBox is by invitation only.

I came up with a way to salvage, and share, some of my genealogy data that's in HTML format. With minor modifications I can get it ready to upload to MyBox where my collaborators can download and view the page with their own browser. I've tested the idea and found it works nicely with Firefox. It's like having a website that can only be viewed by folks who have been granted access.

To test the idea I uploaded Seven Generations of Thomas and Elizabeth (Baskins) McCoy to the MonroeCountyOhio folder on MyBox. Collaborators with access to this folder can test out how it works. When you have the McCoy.htm file name displayed on the screen don't click to preview the file. You can't see the entire webpage from the "preview."

Rather,

• Find the "down" arrow to the right of the file name.
• Click on that arrow.
• Next click on the "Download" line.
• A dialog box pops up on the screen

Chose

• "Save" the file on your computer, or
  
• "View" the file with your browser.
