No News, Is Bad News

There have been no updates concerning the RootsWeb out of service issue from Ancestry since 6 Mar 2018. That's about 70 days without any information about what they are doing.

I know this is a "free" service and therefore probably has a very low priority.  Perhaps they have come to the conclusion that they shouldn't have become involved in the first place.

The least they could do is post periodic updates to keep people who have an interest informed.

RootsWeb Is Down: Data Recovery Strategies for the Genealogist | Genealogy Gems:

As of 1 Jan 2018 there is no projected date for restoring the "free" RootsWeb service to the Internet.

Some of the information I compiled and share is hosted by RootsWeb.

The main website of The Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, where I sometimes provide website assistance, is hosted on RootsWeb.

This is an unfortunate and serious problem. Hopefully, the staff of Ancestry has the skill and finances to fix the problem and restore these valuable genealogy assets to the genealogy community.

Some of the information I share on the Internet is hosted on RootsWeb. Therefore, I expect access to that information will be denied until this issue is resolved. I suppose there is a possibility that this will not be a high priority at Ancestry because they don't make any money from this service they have been providing for a number of years.

• The world of the genealogy hobby continues to be in a state of flux. Genealogy chatrooms on AOL don't seem to offer much of interest to genealogists.
