RESEARCHER: Denver C. Yoho writes:  Samuel Goddard of California submitted a large history of the Goddard and related families on 13 Nov 1899 when he was 69 years of age. His history has been a great help in researching these families. He probably made these records long after he left Virginia and errors have been found in them.

HISTORY:  THE SAMUEL GODARD LETTER
The following brief history is the memories and relationship of myself, Samuel Godard with the Yoho, Garner, Baker, Goddard, Fair, and many other families.

I was born January 13, 1830 on Fish Creek, three miles above its mouth, in Marshall County, Virginia, now West Virginia.

I wish to state that I was personally acquainted with Henry Yoho, herein mentioned, as I boarded at his home three months while going to school when I was about 10 years old.

The old gentleman would tell me Indian stories, till I was afraid to look out of the window.  One story in particular I wish to relate here.

When he was an especial associate of Louis Wetzel, Adam Poe, Simon Gerty [probably spelled, Girty], and other Indian fighters, and had their headquarters at Fort Wheeling, where the city of Wheeling now stands.

He and five other Indian scouts or hunters started from the fort one morning and rode down to Grave Creek, or Moundsville as it is now called, on a hunt for Indians.  They hunted all day and on their return in the evening about 3 or 4 miles above Moundsville, they were attacked by about a dozen Indians.

The man that was riding in front was shot down, and Henry Yoho was next riding a black mare which was shot through the neck and fell with its rider and falling on his foot, held him fast till the Indians got within ten steps of him, the other four men having fled.

All at once, his horse rallied and sprang to her feet and saved her rider.  As the mare rose, several tomahawks flew past Yoho's head, but he escaped unhurt. The old gentleman told many other Indian stories too numerous to mention.

Henry Yoho --- my great-grandfather on my mother's side, was born about 1765.  Raised one son and six daughters, namely---

Now whereas my name appears in this history and all of my other business Godard and all the others Goddard except my brother Joshua is this.

When we were young men, there were three Joshua Goddards that spelled their names all alike and so to make a distinction between them and us, we dropped one of the middle d's out and have so signed our names ever since. Nevertheless, my six sons have adopted the old style of spelling the name, but I shall continue to sign my name short one d the balance of my days.

Now as regards the nationality of the Goddard family---would say--from the best information I can gather from all sources, the name Goddard originated in France and the Goddard people emigrated to England and from there to America and settled, I think, in Eastern PA until the days of John Goddard, my great grandfather, who settled in Western, PA, Greene County, as before stated.

In conclusion, I wish to say with reference to the Yoho family, that I have never heard, in all my life - reading or otherwise, the name of Yoho applied to anyone, except in the person of Henry and Peter Yoho, as before mentioned or their descendants.  I think they were of PA German descent.

They settled in an early day on the Ohio River or Fish Creek near the mouth, in Marshall Co., VA, now WV. and most of their posterity have stayed in the same county ever since.

As a rule the Yoho family was industrious good people and rather inclined to be non-migratory.

From the facts that I have understood, there were seventy-two (72) Yoho voters [who] voted in one precinct, twelve miles square, on the same day, in said county.

Making Contact

Making Contact With McCook, Nebraska

Off and on, over many years of gathering genealogy information, I have attempted to establish contact with the branch of my Henthorn family living in McCook, Red Willow county, Nebraska.  I've never had much success.  These folks are descendants of my great uncle, John Douglas Henthorn of Aurora, Hamilton county, Nebraska.

Out of the blue, on Sunday November 25th, the thought came to me that I ought to see if there was a page for the town of McCook on Facebook.  I quickly discovered that 961 people had visited, and "Liked" the McCook page.  I scrolled through all of the people who'd liked the page and found one Henthorn couple, Roger and Linda.  Linda is the Facebook member.  I sent her a private message to introduce myself.  We exchange several messages and Email addresses as we quickly established our common heritage.

Today I added new information Linda shared to my RootsMagic file.  Then I created a three-page Descendant Chart in PDF format showing the information I have about Roger's father and his descendants.  I sent Linda that report as an Email attachment.

Roger and Dick are second cousins, once removed.  Their common ancestors are, John Henthorn and Betty Holt, who were the great-grandparents of Dick.  John and Betty lived near Fishhook, Pike county, Illinois.  Dick visited Pike county once.  Some of his cousins from that area are friends on Facebook.

Ladies and gentlemen; girls and boys,
Please listen now to me.
And I will tell you what I think
About Nebraska in my plea:
I've been here now past ten years,
And hardships I've passed through,
But give me Nebraska every time,
Nebraska, good and true.

How very foolish some men talk,
And sometimes women too.
Because grasshoppers came so thick.
They can't tell what to do.
Although grasshoppers came as thick
As ever they have been;
Just keep your courage up my boys,
Nebraska is bound to win.

Although the wind may howl and blow.
And clouds of dust may rise,
What matter that? We'll not give up.
Nebraska she's bound to take the prize:
It's true that fuel now is scarce,
And fruit does not abound,
But I think the time will come,
When both in abundance will be found.

Just plow and sow as you have done,
And turn Nebraska's sod.

Aged Pioneer Passes Away
C.K. Conger Prominent When Tekamah Was Young Dies at 96

Casper K. Conger, who was an early pioneer in Tekamah, died at his home near Valentine, Nebraska, September 14, 1923, aged 96 years, 4 months and 5 days.

Mr. Conger's ancestors were among the Pilgrim fathers, a record of which he had in his family Bible dating back to 1700. He was of Scotch-English parents, born in Hannibal, Oswego County, New York, May 9, 1827.

In his school days he began to prepare himself for the ministry, but had to abandon his chosen profession owing to the death of his mother and engaged in farming. His uncle, Rev. Enoch Conger and brother, Rev. Delmar Conger, became prominent as Presbyterian ministers. The Conger family moved to Plymouth, Ohio, where on May 2, 1850 he was united in marriage to Marietta Conklin of English-Irish decent, as her forefathers came over on the Mayflower. Mr. Conger in the early fifties moved to Salem, Indiana and later to South Bend, Ind., where he engaged in business, also in farming.

Four daughters and two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Conger: Mrs. Mary Sutherland, Tekamah, Nebr.; Mrs. Carolyn Hawks, Chloride, Ariz.; Mrs. Evelyn Ludwick, and Mrs. Florence Caister in Los Angeles, Calif.; Chas. M. Conger, Cody, Wyo. and Chester W. Conger, Riverside, Calif., all of whom are left to mourn the passing of a loving and devoted father.

Mr. Conger came to Nebraska with his family from South Bend, Ind. locating in Tekamah, May 6, 1869, and engaged in the hotel business in the old blockhouse, where for a time it was the stage station on the Omaha - Sioux City route, and he was the express agent and postmaster. Later he sold the hotel and bought a farm northwest of Tekamah where Mrs. Conger passed away September 17, 1879, which caused Mr. Conger to sell his farm and return to Tekamah. In the spring of 1883 he was married to Miss Maria Norris of Flint, Michigan and later in that year he moved to a farm near Valentine, Nebraska. Two daughters were born to this second union, Mrs. Jane Weich and Mrs. Margaret McCormick, both whom survive their father and were with him during his last illness their mother having passed away November 9, 1913.

The burial of Mr. Conger was made at Valentine much to the disappointment of his many old time friends in Tekamah, where his activity and wholesome influence for the uplift of humanity left monuments to his memory. He was the founder of the Presbyterian church in this city in 1869 and contributed a good share of the funds to erect the first church building in Tekamah.

Mr. Conger was also an active factor in organizing the Masonic lodge in Tekamah in November 1869 and was its first worshipful master. He was a Knights Templar Mason before he left South Bend, Ind., and became a charter member in organizing Mount Calvary commandry in Omaha, the first in Nebraska.

Mr. Conger was the first chairman of the town board of trustees in its re-organization after the Civil War, which had caused the little hamlet to become almost de-populated and had let its municipal charter lapse which was granted in 1855 by the territorial legislature.

He was also an active factor in organizing Tekamah's Cemetery in 1874 which has since become such a beauty spot. He had frequently expressed his desire to be laid to rest there beside his two wives and many friends.

The Masonic lodge in Tekamah had expected to confer special honor at the burial of its first master, but since interment occurred in Valentine, Monday, floral offerings were sent to that city for the funeral as silent tributes of respects for the worthy old pioneer.

John Henthorn

John Henthorn, son of Abraham and Mary Henthorn, was born on 20 Apr 1820, somewhere in Lancashire, England.

It is believed that he is the John Henthorn who was baptized at Royton, Lancaster, England on 24 Jun 1842.

John learned weaving by the hand loom in England and work at the weaving trade, probably around Manchester, in the area of Shaw, Crompton, and Oldham.

John Henthorn of Crompton, Lancaster, England, a weaver, son of Abraham Henthorn, a weaver, was married, 24 Jun 1842, to Betty Holt, of Crompton, a spinster, and daughter of Abraham Holt, a weaver, at the parish church in the Parish of Prestwich in the County of Lancaster, England. Witnesses were: James Greaves and James Sheldrick.

He was one of eight children, most of whom came to IL. With his brother Charles, he emigrated to America in 1844, stopped first in New York state, where for 2 years he superintended a factory where 62 looms were run.

They moved to Adams county, IL in 1850 and to Pike county in 1852. By 1880 he owned 360 acres of land, in good cultivation and well stocked. He was School Director several terms and was a Democrat. (Source: the "History of Pike County, IL 1880.")

BIOGRAPHY JOHN HENTHORN

John Henthorn, a pioneer of Pike County, a highly successful farmer of Fairmount Township, and a worthy citizen, this gentleman enjoys the esteem of his acquaintances. His estate which is located on section 17, comprises four hundred acres of land and is considered one of the most valuable pieces of property in this section of the country. The residence which was erected in 1878 is located on an eminence and commands an excellent view of the larger part of Fairmount Township. Altogether the homestead is one of which Mr. Henthorn may be justly proud for it represents the results of his own unaided toil.

England was the birthplace of our subject and in Lancastershire, April 20, 1820, he was born to Abraham and Mary Henthorn, also natives of England. The parental family included eight children most of who are located in Illinois. In company with his brother Charles our subject came to the United States in 1844 and has since continued to reside in this country. Prior to coming hither he received a common education in England and there learned the trade of weaver.

The marriage of our subject was solemnized in Lancastershire, England, May 27, 1842, when Miss Betty Holt, a daughter of Abraham and Anna (Holt) Holt became his wife. The parents of Mrs. Henthorn were English people and lived in the old country until quite advanced in years and then emigrated to the United States. They first located in the State of New York whence they removed to Adams County, Ill., and there died. They were weavers in their native land but engaged in farming after coming to America.

Mrs. Henthorn was a lady of refinement and culture, universally beloved for her many noble traits of heart and mind. She accompanied her husband to America where for many years she labored side by side with him and was of material assistance to him. She passed from the scenes of an active existence October 26, 1880, at the age of fifty-seven years. Her death was mourned throughout the whole community where they lived so long. She was a consistent Christian, a true wife and a wise and loving mother.

The children born to Mr. Henthorn and his estimable wife are named as follows: Mary C., who died September 7, 1845; Sarah, Mrs. E. F. Cooley, resides on a farm in Fairmount Township; Abraham who resides in Hadley Township married Miss Anna Cory; Franklin P. is a resident of Fairmount Township and married a lady who bore the maiden name of Miss Jane Weaver; John D. is a resident of Aurora, Neb., and his wife prior to her marriage was Miss Mattie J. Phillips; Janie, Mrs. John Lewis, is a resident of Miami County, Kan., Charles married Miss Minnie J. Powers and lives in Aurora, Neb., William H. who was united in marriage with Miss Mary A. Rust, lives in Fairmount Township.

The tract of land owned and operated by Mr. Henthorn is under excellent cultivation and he keeps on his place the latest improvements in farming machinery and follows the most approved methods in cultivation of the soil. The buildings are substantial and conveniently located and excellently adapted for their various purposes. From time to time our subject has added to his original purchase which was made in Fairmount Township in 1884, until the estate is now a very large one and is widely known as Fairview Farm. Prior to coming to Pike County Mr. Henthorn passed eighteen months in Adams County, this State, but has never regretted his removal here. He belongs to the Democratic party and manifests great interest in both National and local politics, having often been called upon to fill offices of trust and responsibility. He is a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church to which his wife also belonged.

The father of our subject was a weaver by trade and when later improvements caused the hand loom to go out of use he entered this factories of Lancaster and died at a very advanced age. The mother also passed her entire life and finally died in Lancaster. Both parents were members of the Church of England. (Source: "Portrait and Biographical Album" Pike Co., IL, pages 526-527)

Census: 1880, in Pike Co, IL, Fairmount Twp. In the 1880 census he was listed as a farmer. Besides his wife the following children were listed as living at home: John, Jun., 22, son, farmer; Charles, 19, farm laborer; William, 15, farm laborer; and Susan Scoutan, 35, servant.

DEATH: Date of Death, 21 Aug 1895, from gravestone in Woodland Cemetery, Pike Co., IL. Woodland Cemetery is located alongside of the road leading directly south from Fishhook, IL.

Note: John Henthorn was born on 20 Apr 1820 in Lancashire, England. He died on 21 Aug 1895 at Fishhook, Pike Co., IL. He was the great-grandfather of researcher, Dick Henthorn.
