Watson, David & Rebecca Bryan

I've been working on a project to extract the family of Sintha Watson and Isaac B. Wilson from one of my older genealogy files and add it to my Yoho genealogy where I store information about the family of David Watson and Rebecca Bryan. There were 584 people in the Isaac B. Wilson family.

The Watson family has links to: Henthorn, Yoho, and Wilson.  Watstons and Henthorns lived in Fayette Co., PA.  Later Watsons lived in Marion county, West Virginia and Noble, Guernsey and Tuscarawas counties in Ohio, and Sedgwick county, Kansas.

Daniel Hitt Henthorn (James, John, John) was born on 23 Aug 1802 in , Fayette, PA. He died on 23 Aug 1872 in Bucyrus, Crawford, OH. He was buried in Aug 1872 in Bucyrus, Crawford, OH, Oakwood Cemetery.

Problem: If his father, James, mentions the birth of his new son, Daniel Hitt Henthorn in a 19 Mar 1802 letter to the Rev. Daniel Hitt his birth date can't be 23 Aug 1802 as reported.

BIOGRAPHY:
Daniel and Rachel Henthorn had 8 children and 7 were living as of 1893.

Daniel H. Henthorn, was a native of Fayette County, Pennsylvannia, and was a cabinet-maker, a carpenter, a contractor, etc., by trade, devoting the most of his life to that business. His later days were spent as an architect. In 1813, when a boy, he came to the Buckeye State with his parents who were among the early pioneers of Licking County. There he was married to Miss Rachel R. Morrison, a native of Fayette County, Penn., who came with her parents to Ohio when small. They were early pioneers of Licking County.

After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Henthorn removed to Crawford County, Ohio, settled in Bucyrus, in 1833, and were among the early inhabitants of that place. Indians were numerous in the vicinity at that time. Of the eight children born to the above mentioned marriage seven are now living, one, Eugene E., having been killed at the battle of Fredericksburg in 1862. Mr. Henthorn died at Bucyrus in 1872, and his widow survived him several years, her death occurring in Indianapolis in 1884.

RELATIONSHIP: Daniel Hitt Henthorn and John Matson Hitt Cloud were 1st cousins, 1 generation removed. Their common ancestor was John Henthorn, Jr., the grandfather of Daniel Hitt Henthorn.

RESIDENCES: John Parr, father of William Parr, was a neighbor of the Fayette County, PA., Henthorns. Others say his father is, Richard. 

PROBATE: His will, written on 9 Mar 1774, named his wife, Sarah, daughter Margaret, father Richard Parr, and brother-in-law John Henthorn. Executors were Richard Parr and John Henthorn. On 30 Mar 1774 John Henthorn paid travel in settling estate. On Apr 2 the will was proved. On 13 Oct an inventory and sale is recorded (mostly to John Quinn). On 15 Oct the farm was sold to John Cannon, with witnesses John Quinn and James Henthorn. On 2 May 1787 the final settlement by Mary Henthorn, executrix of John Henthorn, who was executor of William Parr - to the wife and daughter: 204-13-1 pounds.

Her home in Pennsylvania was a mile from the 1812 campmeeting where thousands gathered to hear the preachers.

Nathaniel B. Mills reported in his Journal seeing the Henthorns leaving for Ohio on 13 Apr 1813. Mary and son James, and others, were in the party. They settled in Thorn Township, Perry County, OH.  (Source: Henthorn/Bell 1990).
  
It is suggested, by Prof. Bell, in a footnote to the 6 Apr 1797 letter from Mary (Robinette) Henthorn and John Henthorn III (her son) and Deliah (Meek) Henthorn (John's wife), to Rev. Daniel Hitt, that one of Mary's daughters was called, Polly. Problem: Was Polly a nickname? If so, which one of her daughters used this name?

Problem:  Was the date of birth, 12 Apr 1741 or 18 Apr 1741? Henthorn/Bell has the dates as: b. 18 Apr 1741, d. 29 Mar 1824 in Fayette Co., PA. Eileen Jennings also lists the dates as found in Henthorn/Bell.
  
 "The History of Uniontown," by Ellis, states on page 680, that David Jennings settled in the area in 1768 he later returned to his home in the eastern part of the state and persuaded others to join him. John and James Henthorn, brothers of  David Jenning's wife, Mary, came back with Mr. Jennings and the three entered applications at the land office for tracts they had chosen. John Henthorn's land was a tract of 363 acres called "Choice Tract" directly east of "Fear Fax" (David Jenning's tract).


Veech's, "Monongahela of Old," page 201, shows the tax assessment for Springhill Township, Bedford County, PA, for the year 1773. The list includes the name of David Jennings and John and James Henthorn (probably the children of John I).
  
In 1802 at the time of the Quarterly church meeting Noah Fidler preached at the home of David Jennings. His house was a regular preaching point on Redstone Circuit in 1803 (James Quinn) and in 1813 (Mills). Jennings was a trustee of the Uniontown church, built in 1786, and deeded in 1791.

DEATH: He probably died on the Thompson Farm, on McClellandtown Road, Fayette Co., PA.

 David Jennings II came into Fayette County, PA with a group of men led by Adam Brown about 1766. His wife's two brothers, John and James Henthorn, came at the same time and settled near by. John Henthorn applied for and received a  tract of land adjoining David's on the west which he called, "Choice Tract." James Henthorn settled on land adjoining his brother John on the east.
 
David Jennings applied for at least three tracts of land in southwestern Pennsylvania. There were located in Bedford County (1766), Fayette County (1769), and Washington County. When David applied for his land, these tracts were all three located in territory comprising Cumberland County, PA. As Cumberland County was subdivided into smaller areas, the location of the new boundaries placed the tracts in Bedford, Fayette, and Washington counties. The Washington county  tract later became part of Morgan Township, Greene Co., PA. (Source: The Jennings Family, page 20)

Problem:  Hardesty says that David Jennings was a state legislator in 1819, from Belmont Co., OH. It is not clear to which David Jennings he was referring. All David Jennings within the right age bracket are reported to have died in Pennsylvania.

Today I finished an edit project on my RootsMagic genealogy file of John Henthorn and Frances Low of Uniontown, Fayette county, Pennsylvania. This file includes 3,801 individuals and 1,468 marriages. Another family prominently featured in this file is the Jennings family.

The edits:

• including the name of each person in the second line of their notes
• adding sort dates, where needed, to insure that death information precedes burial information
• adding nicknames to the Nickname field whenever possible
• adding Copyright and contact information to the note of John Henthorn
  

I'm now able to produce a 446-page report, with an every name index, from this file. RootsMagic outputs reports in the PDF format.

Hugh Jackson, Jr.

BIOGRAPHY: Hugh Jackson, Jr. was one of five children born to Hugh and Mary Jackson, Sr. as listed in his father's Will filed at Annapolis, MD in Book TS I, p. 130.

He was born on June 19, 1744 and died on May 1, 1812 as determined from the inscription on his tombstone located in the Grace Episcopal Church cemetery, Searights, PA. It is not known where he was born, but it was probably Ireland in that his older brother, Robert, was born there. This parents did not come to the colonies until about 1750 according to notes found in the original folder of Albert G. Macdonald.

About 1760 the parents were living in the area around Frederick (Frederick Town), Maryland as the "Calendar of Maryland State Papers," also known as "The Black Book #1," reflects on page 141, that Hugh Jackson (Sr.) and his son, Robert Jackson (Sr.) were among the numerous petitioners to Governor Horatio Sharpe. Hugh Jr. was too young to be a signer. In the same book, on page 194, it shows that Hugh Jackson Senior and Junior and others were petitioners in 1766 to Governor Sharpe regarding the issuing of bills to pay creditors.

Hugh Jackson, Jr. married Elizabeth Hayes about 1770 as their first child, Mary, was born in 1771. Hugh and his bride lived in the Fayette County, PA area as "The Ten Mile Country and It's Pioneer Families," shows the tax assessment list for 1772 for Springhill Township, Bedford County, PA. It further states that Springhill Township included part of the present Fayette County area lying south of Redstone Creek to the mouth of Jacob's Creek. This tax list is also shown in the Pennsylvania Archives, Series III, Vol XXII and in Veech's "Monongahela of Old." The Pennsylvania Archives, Series III, Vol XXII, page 450 lists for the year 1783 the inhabitants of Manallen [sic] Township, Westmoreland County. This lists, Hugh Jackson (Jr.). On page 556 is listed Hugh Jackson under the Return for Fayette County, Menallen Township. (Fayette County was created from Westmoreland County in September 1783.)

When Hugh Jackson Jr. went to Menallen Township, he settled on Dunlap Creek. The Land Grant map for Menallen Township shows the original patents to land. This map reflects that a warrant dated November 7, 1785 was given to Hugh Jackson for 273 acres and allowances. A patent was granted on May 7, 1788 and the tract was known as "Dauphin," and is recorded in Patent Book 13, p. 128. I obtained a copy of the map at Uniontown, PA. It is also available at the Department of Internal Affairs, Harrisburg, PA.

Hugh and his wife, Elizabeth, continued to live in Menallen Township during their lifetime. They had a large family of at least 11 children. The administration of his estate is filed in the Orphan Court Records at Uniontown, PA, in Volume I. Since he did not leave a Will, a petition was entered by his son, Henry. The petition, filed on page 120 of Volume I, reflects the following heirs: wife, Elizabeth; Children: Mary, Robert, Margaret, David, Ann, Henry, Elizabeth, Sarah, Phebe and Rachel. There is also mentioned the five children of a daughter, Rebecca (Jackson) Poland, namely: Ann, John, Elizabeth, Samuel and David. (Rebecca had died before 1812.)

It is interesting to note that sons, Robert and David, married sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth Fuller and that two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah, married brothers, Daniel and Stacy Rogers.

Hugh Jackson Jr. and Elizabeth Jackson are both buried in the Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery on U.S. Route 40 about 3 miles south of Searights, PA. In 1969 Albert G. Macdonald went to this cemetery and found that the church building had been completely removed and its location was marked by a brick altar with a brass plate bearing the inscription:

"Grace Episcopal Church; Log Church on this site used before 1793; Brick Church erected 1840 used until 1939; This altar erected 1965 as a memorial to those whose faith built the church and cemetery"

This property was originally owned by Robert Jackson Sr., a brother of Hugh Jackson Jr. The property consisted of 3/4 acres of the original land grant. It was inherited by Robert Jackson Jr. In 1838, Robert Jackson Jr. and his wife, Margaret (Henthorn) Jackson deeded the property to the Trustees of the church. BIOGRAPHY:
Elizabeth Jackson, the wife of Hugh Jackson, Jr. was born in 1752 according to the original folder of Albert G. Macdonald. This was confirmed by the date and inscription on her tombstone.

According to Cousin Jessie Hamilton it was concluded by her sister, Helen Williams, that Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry and Ann (Strode) Hayes and that she was born in New Garden Township, Chester County, PA. Her reference was page 52 of "The Hayes Family," by Royal S. Hayes. Albert Macdonald located this book at the Library of Congress.

Mr. Macdonald also located "The Proceedings of the Bi-Centennial of Henry Hayes, 1906" and searched New Garden and other Quaker Meeting records. These records show that, Elizabeth was the second child born to Henry and Ann Hayes who were married September 17, 1748 at New Garden. It is logical that Elizabeth could have been born in 1752 but no date is given in any of the records. "The Hayes Family," page 52 reflects that Margaret Hayes, born about 1726, and a sister of Henry, married Jeremiah Starr in 1746 and married again in 1769 to John Jackson. Because we know that Hugh's wife was Elizabeth, I believe the reference is in error. Also I doubt that Elizabeth Hayes married Hugh. The above books reflect that Ann Hayes died in 1766 at Wilmington, Del., and Henry remarried in 1768 and lived in Darby, PA. Elizabeth probably continued to live with her father until she married and there seems to be no logical reason why either she should go to Fayette County or why Hugh would go to Chester County to meet and marry.

1995 Family Reunion

The Watson Family Reunion was held on Sunday 16 Jul 1995 at the Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia, OH.


RESEARCHER: Belinda Fowler Watson furnished some information on the David Watson family to Denver C. Yoho. She probably published a Watson book.


BIOGRAPHY:
David Watson and his family came from Fayette Co., PA and settled on Gladys Branch of Seneca Creek, both of which now help to form the Seneca Lake [in Ohio]. They are both buried in the David Watson Cemetery, on their farm which is now known as the Patrick Bates farm. This David Watson Cemetery is located up around the Seneca Lake, a few miles from Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH. There is also an old Jacob Yoho Cemetery which is almost surrounded by the waters of Seneca Lake. The Watson, Wilson, and Yoho families, when they first came to Ohio, all settled on Wills Creek Valley within one to three miles from one another. Found from this is Watsons married Wilsons, Wilsons married Watsons, and Watsons married Yohos.
