Indenture - John Henthorn to James Henthorn - 1745

This Indenture made this 5[th] day of May in the year of our Lord God one Thousand and Seven Hundred and forty fiev Between John Henthorn of Baltimore County and Province of Maryland Farmer, of the one part & James Henthorn of Baltimore County in Province of Farmer, of the Other Part

Witnefseth that the Said John Henthorne for and in Consideration of the Sum of Twenty Pounds of Pennsylvania to him in hand Paid by the said James Henthorn the ?

Whereof he Doth Hereby Acknowledge and the said James Henthorn thereof & of Every Part and Parcell thereof doth acquit release and for ? discharge have Bargained and Sold & by these Presents doth Bargain Sell unto the said James Henthorn Part of that Tract of ? of Land ? or known by the name of Providence lying in Baltimore County ... ...??? as follows

Viz Beginning at a ? White Oake Standing on a Hill Side Near the Waggon Road leading from Susguahana to Potomak and Running thence North West forty Perches North East. Two ? and Eight Perches South East, one Hundred Twenty Perches and thence by a Straight line To the Beginning Conetaning and laid out for one Hundred acres more of lesf

To have and To hold the ? Tract or P? of Land with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging or appurtaint to him the said James Henthorn his heirs & afsigns for Ever & to his & thiers only Propper use & ? of and to & for no other use ? or Purpose Whatsover and the said John Henthorn for hisself & his heirs doth Covonant and Agree with the said Jame Henthorn his heirs and Afsigns taht he said John Henthorn at the time of the ? sealing & Delivery of these Presents is ? in his demise as of ? of the ? Tract or parcell of Land with all the appurtenances & hath good Right Absolute & lawfull Authority to Sell & Convey the same and ? Indenture - John Henthorne to Mathias Smiser - 1745

John Henthorne to Mathias Smiser.} This Indenture made the 3d day of May one thousand and Seven Hundred forty & five between John Henthorn of Balt County & Province of Maryland Farmer of the one part and Mathias Smiser of the other part.

Witnefseth the the said John Henthorn for and in Consideration of the sum of one Hundred and Sixty Pounds Currant money of Penselvany to him in hand paid by the said Mathias Smiser the receipt Whereof he doth hereby acknowledge & the said Mathias Smiser for Ever discharge both bargained & sold & by thesee Presents doth Bargain & sell unto the said Mathias Smiser part of that Tract of ? of Land Call or known by the name of Providence lying Balt county ? ? & bound as followoth Viz. beginning at a black oake standing on the East side of a ? - near the waggon road leading from Susquahana to Potomack running thence north East Two Hunrd Fifty Two perches South East Two Hund red Twenty ? north Sixty ? perches degrees East Two Hundred fort Six/souhes and then by a Straight line to the Beginning Tree Containing & laid out for Two Hundred & Seventy Two Acres more of lefs To have & to hold the ? Conveyance

Frances (Low) Henthorn

RELATIONSHIP: Frances Low was named for her grandmother, Frances Johnson, who was married to Daniel Johnson. She was called Fanny by her grandson, Rev. James Quinn, in his recollections.

Problem: The last name has been reported as: Low and Lowe.

RELATIONSHIP: Frances Low was the niece of Hannah Johnson who married Thomas Cresap, Sr. This is the link between the Henthorn family and the Cresap family. Thomas Cresap was a leader of the folks from Maryland who became involved in a border dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania. Thomas Cresap was imprisoned in Philadelphia for his part in the affair. It is reported by some that his wife and children lived with some of the Henthorns at Cordurus, PA while he was in prison. The various exploits of Thomas Cresap and his sons are quite well documented.

DEATH: She died soon after the birth of her daughter, Sarah in 1744.

LAND-DEATH: Some say she died about 1745. This is because on the conveyance, selling "Providence," dated 3 May 1745, the wife testifying was named: Margarett. Nothing is known of this woman, but it is assumed that John, being a widower with 4 children, would have remarried. "Providence" was located on Codorus River (Creek) in Baltimore Co., MD in what is now the area of York, PA.
