For several years I used a free service called, Delicious, to share links (URLs) to webpages that interested me. Another term for this process is, Bookmarking. Recently, much to my dismay, I discovered that Delicious had been shut down.

To resume bookmarking, that can be shared in the cloud, I have created a Google blog, called Mr. Dickie's Links.  I will not be restricting posts to the blog solely to genealogy.

If you visit the blog, use the sidebar on the left to help you find topics of interest. Scroll down to see links to the latest posts.  The topics are called "labels" by Google.  The number of characters available for labels with each post is two hundred.  The labels are what you see in the sidebar.  The labels I assign to a particular post appear at the bottom of the individual posts.  In the sidebar, if I have used a label more than once a count appears in parentheses after the label.  You can click on a label at the bottom of a post to display all posts in the blog where I have assigned that label or you can click on the label in the sidebar.

When I include a hot-link within a post it appears in blue on the screen. If you hover the mouse over a link, the color changes to orange.  Click on the click to view the page associated with the link.

BTW, I am open to suggestions for adding genealogy links to the blog.

Yesterday and today I worked on a project to create Delicious bookmarks to Yoho Descendant Charts, shared by researcher, T. Vernon Anderson, on the USGenWeb Marshall county, West Virginia website.

Yesterday I learned how to copy and paste text for the Delicious "Note" field when I want to create a posting from Firefox.

I learning about the Wayback Machine. I discovered that some of my webpages from the old AOL website can be found at this website. To find the pages I need to remember the URLs of the various places where I uploaded the pages. I plan to write more about this on my genealogy "News" blog and in reply to a posting on GenForum that asks what happened to the website.

Conger Links

As of March 27, 2009 there are twelve links to Conger genealogy information in my bookmarks on Delicious.

Once you've signed on to my bookmarks on Delicious you can quickly find them by entering the tags "Genealogy" and "Conger."

Search Engines

There are more search engines than Google on the Internet. There's even a webpage that tracks search engines.

Today I posted twenty search engine bookmarks to Delicious. If you are interested in trying out other search engines go to Delicious and enter "Search" "Engine" or "SearchEngine." The link to my bookmarks on Delicious is the last line in the right-hand sidebar of Henthorn Genealogy News.

If you know of other useful search engines let me know and I can added them to Delicious.

Delicious Genealogy

I was able to add bookmarks to pages on my Google genealogy group to Delicious. That's nice because the bookmarks allow me to write a description of the file I am referencing.

Tags make it possible to focus on a topic within my bookmarks. For example, If someone wants to see all of my bookmarks that have a tag for the "Yoho" family entering this URL is all it takes.

You can also search for more than one tag by entering a plus sign (+) between tags. For example: to find all of my bookmarks pointing to the articles about "PDF" written by Dick Eastman use this URL.

After trying this URL enter the following line without the word "Eastman" to see the difference. This one finds all of the pages about "PDF."

This ability to gather all of the links together in one set is very powerful. You could think of the bookmarks of "MrDickie" as a website with pointers to all of the webpages he's either found or posted himself. This website doesn't have a structure, like a tree or organizational chart. Rather the website is dynamic or virtual. The visitor searches for the topic of interest using a tag or tags and Delicious presents a display, similar to a Google search, which gathers all of the pages about the topic of interest together.

There's more to it than I'm writing about here. Once you are at Delicious you will see lists of tags, a place to key in tags, counts of the number of times the tags were used and much more.
