Data Recovery Project

Data Recovery Project

My next data recovery project will be for the family of William David Henthorn and Susannah Parrott of Vermillion Co., IN. William David Henthorn was the son of James Henthorn II and Elizabeth Unknown.

Currently I do most of my genealogy using a file that I named "pafyoh." This file contains thousands of records.

My goal is to copy all Henthorn(e) data from an older file "PAFBIG" to the newer "pafyoh" file. As part of this project edits must first be done to the older file records.

Edits such as:
  • Correct place names from West Virginia to Virginia, if prior to 1863
  • Add each person's name to the top of their Note field
  • Add PARENTS: to the Note field of the children, if a child Note field exists
  • Enter Find A Grave Memorial numbers, if possible
  • Remove periods (.) that were used in the Note fields to leave blank lines been paragraphs when I used the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) for genealogy. [What a mess that made.]

Genealogy Index for Clark County, Indiana, United States of America

This is something that might be of interest to Henthorn researchers. One or more GEDCOM files for the Henthorn family are listed. I was able to display the file contents on my computer screen. The file listed the name of the person who created the file and gave credit to another researcher for the information.

You should be able to download the GEDCOM file(s) to your own computer for loading into your own genealogy program. If anyone does this I'd like to hear from you. We could post a report of your findings on this blog.

Yoho, Samuel and Elizabeth Preble

I uploaded a five generation descendant chart for Samuel Yoho and Elizabeth Preble to MyBox. This report, in HTML format, includes the family of Charles and Anna (Brown) Yoho of Vermilion Co., IL. This report was available prior to October 2008 on my AOL website. This upload is part of my project to salvage work I did in the past.

Did you know there are two ways to spell Vermilion? When you are talking about the county in Illinois use one "L" and when you are talking about the neighboring county in Indiana use two "LL."

Members of the Henthorn family also lived in Danville, Vermilion Co., IL.

Access to MyBox is by invitation.

Harrison, Thomas Henry

Thomas Henry Harrison, one of the old and honored pioneers of Highland Township, residing on section 31, about five miles west of Perrysville, [IN] was born in Ohio County, West Virginia January 1, 1810.

His father, John Harrison, removed from Baltimore, Maryland to West Virginia, and later settled with his family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he died when the subject of this sketch was a child. He was a nailer by trade, and was engaged in the manufacture of nails in Pittsburgh. After his death the family returned to West Virginia, remaining there until 1819, then moved to Monroe County, Ohio.

The mother was a second time married to William Harris, who died in the United States Army, and to this union two sons were born, named Charles and Samuel.

In 1824 the mother immigrated with her family to Vermillion County, Indiana where she died April 9, 1861, at the advanced age of eighty six years.

Thomas Henry Harrison, whose name heads this sketch, arrived in Perrysville for the first time December 20, 1834. January 29, 1835, he was united in marriage to Miss Marinda Henthorn, a daughter of William D. Henthorn, who came to Vermillion County at the same time as the Harrison family. He then settled on land now occupied by our subject where he lived until his death, his wife also dying at the homestead some time before. Of the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Henthorn only four daughters are living at the present time.

Eleven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Harrison, of whom seven are still living - Virginia, Richard, Susan, Marinda, Mary C., Charles and Margaret M.

Their eldest son, William M., was a member of Company K, One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Illinois Infantry, in the war of the Rebellion. He was wounded at the battle of Perryville, Kentucky, but died of pneumonia at Gallatin, Tennessee, January 13, 1863, in his twenty-sixth year.

The remaining children who are deceased are - John, who died August 18, 1846 aged six years; Thomas B., died in his thirty second year, July 4, 1863, at Jonesboro, Arkansas, and one who died in infancy, unnamed.

In April 1835, shortly after his marriage, Mr. Harrison went to Porter County, Indiana, returned to Perrysville, Vermillion County, in October of the same year. In August 1838 he settled on the place where he has since resided, with the exception of one year. As will be seen Mr. Harrison has been a resident of Highland Township about fifty-four years, and is now the only representative of his father's family living in Indiana.

He has always been an active and public spirited citizen, being interested in all enterprises which tend toward the advancement of this township or county. In politics he was in early life a Whig, but in later years a Republican.

Most Wanted - Parents of Elijah Henthorn(e)

Most Wanted
Parents of Elijah Henthorn(e)

A long standing research question is, "Who were the parents of Elijah Henthorn(e) of Otisco, Clark co., IN?". Some researchers think he was the son of Robert and Mary (Nicholson) Henthorn. Norma L. Henthorn and Raymond M. Bell think he was the son of John Henthorn and Nancy Jane Garrison and that his grandparents were William and Jane Henthorn.

Here's some of the information that has been shared over the years.

Name: Elijah HENTHORN(E)
AKA: Eligah
Birth:15 Apr 1803 Wheeling, Ohio Co., VA
Death: 3 Sep 1896, Clark Co., IN
Burial: 5 Sep 1896 Otisco, Clark Co., IN, Otisco Cemetery
Probably Father of:
  • Louisa Henthorn--1833;
  • Miranda Henthorn--1838;
  • Matalida Henthorn--1839;
  • James A. Henthorn--1839;
  • Margaret Henthorn--1842;
  • Isabel Henthorn--1844;
  • Jane Henthorn-1845;
  • Sarah Henthorn-1847;
In the 1990 work of Norma L. Henthorn and Raymond M. Bell, "The Henthorn Family, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, with notes on Cresap and Quinn Families," page 12, they list Eligah Henthorn as a son of John Henthorn and Nancy Jane Garrison. Robert Henthorn who married Mary Nicholson Henthorn is listed as the brother of John Henthorn who married Nancy Jane Garrison. The father of Robert and John is listed as, William Henthorn who married, Jane. William lived in Ohio co., VA and Clark co., IN where he died in August 1823. Here's the family of John Henthorn:
  • John Henthorn b. ca 1776 d. ca 1855 m. Nancy Jane Garrison.
  • Lived in Licking co. Oh. and Clark co. Ind.
  • Issue:
  • 1. Isaih [sic] b. ca 1800 d. ca 1845 m. Anna Ceurry.
  • 2. Eligah b. 15 Apr 1803 d. 3 Sept. 1896 m. 1st Nancy; m. 2nd Mary Alstatt.
  • 3. Isabel b. ca 1808 m. Turner Campbell.
  • 4. Margaret b. ca 1809 d. 28 June 1855 m. Reece M. Reid.
  • 5. John b. ca 1827 d. 1 Sept. 1890 m. Olive M. Brooks.
  • Other children unknown.
In another typed, unpublished document, prepared by Norma Henthorn in May of 1958 she again listed the family of Robert Henthorn and did not list a son, Eligah. This document did not list the family of John Henthorn of Licking Co., OH.

DEATH: OTISCO, [IN]
Otisco, July 22, [1896]. -- Elijah Henthorn is at the point of death and can not live but a few hours. He was born in Ohio, April 5, 1803,

BURIAL: OTISCO
Otisco, Sept. 7 [1896] -- Mr. Elijah Henthorn was buried on Saturday at the Otisco cemetery. Uncle Lige was in his 94th year and had been a resident of this place for many years. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss. The children that lived in Iowa and New York did not arrive for the funeral.
(Source: Evening News, 9 Sep 1896 - furnished by Florence Hunstein)

CEMETERY:
According to Alan Frederick Smith this Elijah Henthorne is buried in the Otisco Cemetery at Otisco, IN. Alan states, "There is another Elijah Henthorn stone in a cemetery 5 miles east and a little south of Otisco, IN."
QUESTION: Who is the Elijah Henthorn buried at the location south of town?

CEMETERY:
Florence Hunstein reports that there is a large marker in the Otisco cemetery for Elijah Henthorne. It is believed that Mary Alstott is also buried there but the inscriptions on the stones do not show it. A photograph of the tombstone reveals an inscription that can clearly be read.
It states: "Elijah Henthorne, Born Wheeling, West Virginia, April 15, 1803, Died September 3, 1896. Erected by his devoted daughter Florence."
[Note: There is an "e" on the end of the name, inscribed on the stone. REH]

Most Wanted - Parents of Elijah Henthorn(e)

Most Wanted
Parents of Elijah Henthorn(e)

Can anyone help solve a mystery still unsolved after years of research?

I am searching for the parents of my great grandfather, Elijah Henthorn(e) born 15 April 1803, VA now Wheeling, Ohio Co.,WVA. He moved with his family to Clark County IN in the early 1800s.

He married first, Mathilda Birch 08 Jan 1827, Dearborn Co. IN; In 1850 Clark Co. census, he is listed with 9 children, ages 19 to 3 yrs; no wife.

He married second, Mary Alstott 01 Jan 1852, Clark Co. IN, daughter of Robert Alstott and Sarah Long. Elijah and Mary moved to Iowa sometime after 1851 and before 1853 when their first child, John W. was born 1853. Three more children born in Iowa: Mary b. 1856; Florence Eugena b. 1857; Ella b.1860.

Sometime after 1860 - the family was recorded in the 1860 Iowa census - they moved back to Clark County where four more children were born: William, b. 1863; Rose Caroline b. 1865 (my grandmother); Buena Vista, b. 1867 and Charles E. b. 1870.

Conflicting records by other researchers claim Robert Henthorn b. 1775, son of William b. 1745 is Elijah's father. Other claims Robert's brother John Henthorn b. 1776. No source or documentation noted for either.

Problem: Was Robert Henthorn, Elijah's father? He lived in Clark County until removing to Iowa where he died in 1845. Elijah moved to Iowa a few years after Robert's death. Why? John Henthorn was in Clark County but removed to Ohio. None of Elijah's children was named Robert. His first born by Mary Alstott was named John W. There are a few clues but no proof. Any help will be very much appreciated. This has been a mystery much too long! Please let me hear from you.

Allen County Public Library - Fort Wayne, IN

It's been months since I posted anything to this blog. I think I am ready to post something from time to time. At the present time I am not actively working on genealogy. I do, however, have many documents and other information that I can share. Let's see where this takes me.

If you are interested in Henthorn genealogy and are fortunate to be able to visit the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN you can review five documents with information about the Henthorn family.

"Henthorn family: James Henthorn II, of Monroe County, Ohio" by Richard E. Henthorn and Mary Josephine (Henthorn) Bolerjack.
