WikiSpaces Closing

WikiSpaces Closing

Yesterday, while at the Senior Center to attend the twice-monthly Bowie Seniors Computer Club meeting I was using one of the two public computers in the hallway for a half-hour session.

The first thing I noticed was that a lady had been using Gmail and left the computer without signing off. She left over 4,000 Email messages open to public view. I was able to quickly figure out how to sign her off.

Next, I noticed a message from WikiSpaces. They announced that they will be shutting down the business in 2018 in a phased manner.  This will have an impact on me. In January I paid them $100 for a yearly subscription for the web space where I share lots of my genealogy information. I didn't determine how long I have to save my work. I didn't see this coming.

If you are interested in downloading anything I share on WikiSpaces or if you want to record any of the Links to other content that I share, now is the time to take action.

At this point, I haven't had enough time to think about what I want to do next. Building a website isn't a trivial matter, it takes many hours. If you have any proven suggestions that have worked for you I'm interested in what you have to say.

HenthornFamily - Wiki on Wikispaces

HenthornFamily - Wiki:

On 2 Jan 2018 I renewed the annual subscription for my HenthornFamily Wiki on Wikispaces.

My Plus account is for 2Gb of storage with a 20Mb limit for any one file.

The cost per year is $10.00 a month or $100.00 a year. I think this is a little high (they doubled the price when they raised the price). However, I am willing to pay what they charge because I don't want to go to the trouble of moving the information to another host.

The Visitor Counter currently shows 2320 visits to the homepage. That's a little disappointing considering the cost of maintaining the Wiki.

I am willing to host information shared by others. I don't believe anyone has taken me up on this offer.

Please encourage your genealogy friends to visit.

WikiSpaces Account

Today I renewed my subscription to HenthornFamily on WikiSpaces for another year.

The cost of an annual subscription has doubled to $100.00 which made me question whether I wanted to continue to make information available via this means.  In the end I decided to spend the money rather than get involved in another website building project.

If you are interested in viewing what I make available I hope you will avail yourself of the opportunity in 2017.  Your use of the website will justify my expenditure.

If you are willing to share information with others contact me to discuss how this could be accomplished using my WikiSpace.  My Gmail address is: Dick.Henthorn@gmail.com

HenthornFamily Wiki

HenthornFamily Wiki

Today I am pleased to announce that the HenthornFamily Wiki is once again active and available to family and friends who are interested in my genealogy projects.

The WikiSpaces company discontinued "free" Wiki space.  Rather than lose all of the information I've been sharing I decided to pay for a one-year subscription at the "Plus" level.  I haven't thought much about what features this will entail.  Perhaps the most important aspect is that the subscription includes 2GB of space.

Did you know that the HenthornFamily Wiki is a collaborative Wiki? This means two things and perhaps more 1) Visitors can make comments and 2) they can post their own information. As far as I know no one has done this in the months that the Wiki has been available.  Therefore, I'm not certain how this works. I'm interested in working with anyone who has the time and interest to try out this idea.

Here's the link to the HenthornFamily Wiki:

P.S.
After I reactivated the Wiki I noticed there is a problem with PDF files that I stored on the Wiki. They don't display correctly.  I think you can download to your computer.  Before I contact the Help folks I'll need to refresh my memory about how files are uploaded and stored on the Wiki.  I wonder if the problem has anything to do with the fact that my account was inactive for a while since they stopped offering the "free" space.  I'm making no promises about how soon I'll deal with and resolve the problem.  I apologize for any inconvenience.

WikiSpaces Is No Longer Free

I noticed that my WikiSpaces needed verification.  I followed instructions and thought I reactivated my account.

Wikispaces is no longer offering free non-education wikis
Today we are announcing that Wikispaces is no longer offering a free option for non-education wikis.

I'm sharing lots of information on my WikiSpaces account.  It turns out they didn't really mean I needed to Verify.  They meant I needed to upgrade.

Oh Good Grief! Here's what happened.  They changed the Terms of Use and it will cost $50.00 a year to keep it running.  I'm not sure there is enough traffic to warrant the expense.

Once again "Free" isn't "free."

FreePages Project

FreePages Project

This morning I posted a link to the Civil War Diary of William Lock Henthorn on the HenthornFamily Wiki.  I create a new page, Stories, on the Wiki where links to stories will be posted.  Look for Stories in the left hand column.  The Civil War Diary file resides in my FreePages space on RootsWeb.  When you view the webpage you'll discover that there is a navigation button at the bottom of the page which you can click to return to the Stories page on the wiki.

To assist in navigation from by Google blogs a link to the HenthornFamily Wiki was added to the sidebar "Links" area of the four blogs.

As time and my interest permit I plan to upload other files, created prior to the Fall of 2008, to the Internet thus making them available once again to anyone who's interested.

As always your feedback is welcome.

Researching Your Family—A Suggestion on Where to Start

Researching Your Family—A Suggestion on Where to Start:

More about using the FamilySearch Wiki.  Did you know you can contribute to the Wiki?

Have you considered creating your own wiki for genealogy?  I did and I created one on WikiSpaces.com so we can learn about how to do it together.  This means that you are invited to contribute.  If you don't know what to do, just ask and I will try to help. Where's the wiki?  It's just a click away.  Your feedback would be helpful.

HenthornFamily Wiki

My current genealogy project is to learn about how we can use Wikis for genealogy.  For a couple of weeks I have been building the HenthornFamily wiki on WikiSpaces.  Please feel free to visit, to comment, to provide feedback and to participate by sharing your information and collaborating by posting to the Wiki.

HenthornFamily Wiki

This week I've added links to Ahnentafels and to County and Society websites.

If you are aware of genealogy websites for any of the variations of the Henthorn surname please post the links to the Wiki or send them to me in an Email and I will do it.

Wikis As A Genealogy Research Tool

Wikis As A Genealogy Research Tool

I think Wikis have lots of potential as genealogy tools.  I'm interested in investigating the topic.

The most attractive feature of a Wiki, it seems to me, is that if the Wiki is public or open to invited members anyone can create or add to a page.  It's a way to collaborate in The Cloud.  Thus, it provides an open-ended way to share genealogy information, to post queries, to meet and bond with other people working on the same families.

HenthornFamily Wiki On Wikispaces

I created the HenthornFamily Wiki on Wikispaces to get us started with the learning process.  This isn't "my" Wiki.  Rather, it is "our" Wiki.  It's a learning exercise.  It's an experiment.  It's a genealogy project.  We don't know how the experiment will turn out.  In reality it all depends on "you."  If visitors are willing to post and share information there's no telling how useful the Wiki might be.  Don't hesitate to get involved.  As long as you keep your postings civil (no flaming allowed) and don't post advertisements we all should get along fine.
