Abraham ICE purchased for the sum of 464 dollars the tracts of land formerly belonging to William ICE Sr. that was decreed by the Clarksburg Superior Court of Chancery to the aforesaid heirs.  This purchase contained 80 and one-half acres and 14 poles that had been surveyed by William Haymond.  

Note: A "pole" is a measure of distance used in surveying equal to a rod or sixteen and one-half feet.

Abraham ICE, Sr., age 60, farmer, birthplace: Pennsylvania.  Mary, age 57, birthplace: Maryland, cannot read or write.  

Children were born in Virginia.  

Abraham, age 21.  Moses, age 18 .  Andrew, age 15.  Sarah M., age 26.

Leg Amputated After Logging Accident

In the outset of this brief history, I stated "America to the 10th Generation".   "Indian Billy" had 15 children; one of these was Abraham, who married Mary Polly Lewman.   

Abraham had the misfortune to have a tree fall on his leg while cutting timber on "Hoult Hill", now Hillcrest, and not being able to get free, it was necessary to cut his leg off. He was a very large man and it is said that he stood the cutting with the crude timber saw, cutting the bone, and it was done without anesthetic. He wore a wooden peg leg until his death and became known as "Lame Abe". Lame Abe had 13 children; one of which was James, who married Levina Snodgrass. 

James a farmer was shot during the Civil War for being a southern sympathizer, but that is another story. James and Levina had five children and one of them was John Linsey who married Rebecca McDougal.  

John, a railroader, was killed near Grafton when he was impaled through the middle by a Jennie Coupling between two railroad cars. John and Rebecca had two sons,  James Lee, married Minerva Jane Pyles, James Lee and Minerva had three children. William Ice married Rebecca Williams.
