RootsMagic Search Everywhere

RootsMagic Search Everywhere

Today I noticed a search option with RootsMagic that I hadn't seen before.

This option finds records by searching the text of the Note field.

I ran two tests looking for data tags that I entered in all caps:
  • Search for all records with the word, RESEARCHER
  • Search for all records with the word, OBITUARY
Here are three screen captures I made during the process.

First, enter the word you seek, in this case, RESEARCHER. In my Note fields this word is in uppercase (all caps) so I checked the Match case box. You have the option of searching for more than one word. In my test I was only interested in one word.

Next, after you click on "OK" the Search Everything box appears with a thermometer in green displaying the search progress.

Finally, the search results are displayed, in alphabetical order, based on the names of the person whose Note contains the word or words of interest. Here, before making the screen capture, I scrolled to the entry for deceased Yoho family researcher, Denver Clayton Yoho.

For each person in the report a snippet of the the text of their Note with the search word(s) highlighted in red is displayed.

Also, there are two hot spots, in blue, that can be clicked to go directly to a person's record

  • Note:

The HTM file can be printed or saved.

HISTORY: Buried- Barrackville, WV- Ice Cemetery
Leg Amputated After Logging Accident
In the outset of this brief history, I stated "America to the 10th Generation".   "Indian Billy" had 15 children; one of these was Abraham, who married Mary Polly Lewman.

Abraham had the misfortune to have a tree fall on his leg while cutting timber on "Hoult Hill", now Hillcrest, and not being able to get free, it was necessary to cut his leg off. He was a very large man and it is said that he stood the cutting with the crude timber saw, cutting the bone, and it was done without anesthetic. He wore a wooden peg leg until his death and became known as "Lame Abe". Lame Abe had 13 children; one of which was James, who married Levina Snodgrass.

James a farmer was shot during the Civil War for being a southern sympathizer, but that is another story. James and Levina had five children and one of them was John Linsey who married Rebecca McDougal.

John, a railroader, was killed near Grafton when he was impaled through the middle by a Jennie Coupling between two railroad cars. John and Rebecca had two sons,  James Lee, married Minerva Jane Pyles, James Lee and Minerva had three children. William Ice married Rebecca Williams.

Virginia Helen Conaway

Virginia Helen Conaway, 9 May 1843 - 31 Jan 1922, was a West Virginia spinster. She wrote a short piece titled, "Ice's Ferry." Apparently, no one has seen a copy.

My friend, Susan Henthorn, librarian at Berea College in Berea, KY located a finding aide that indicates the document, and several others, are located at the West Virginia University Library in Morgantown.

Virginia Helen Conaway

PARENTS: Thomas Franklin Conaway and Elmira Hall

RESEARCHER: Wrote the story, "ICE'S FERRY"
[Note: As of Feb 2018, many have written about this document, which is sometimes called "a book." I don't think anyone has a copy or that anyone knows how many pages there were. Written by Richard E. Henthorn on 17 Feb 2018.]

Title: Ice's Ferry. History and Genealogy. Typed Documents
Call number: A&M No.: 379
Creator, Corp name: Ice's Ferry
Inclusive dates: 1920, undated
Extent: 1/4 in. (1 folder)
Abstract: Five typescripts pertaining to Ice's Ferry and the Ice family. The first typescript is "Ice's Ferry," (8 pp., undated) an account of the Ice family and of Ice's Ferry in Monongalia County, with comments on frontier and pioneer life in western Virginia, apparently written by Virginia H. Conaway of Marion County. The second item is a variant copy of the "Ice's Ferry," typescript (10 pp., undated). The third typescript is a copy of "Historical Notes on Ice's Ferry," written by John L. Johnston (6 pp., 1920). Covering the time span of 1758-1920, the narrative describes early settlements, roads, forts, Indians, industries, land offices, and families prominent in the development of areas near Ice's Ferry. Mention is made of the proposed construction of a dam and recreation area on the Cheat River. The fourth item is a facsimile typescript of "Some of the Earliest History of the Ice Family" (9 pp., undated), which covers roughly 1680 through the 1900s. The fifth typescript is a magazine article facsimile about Adam Ice (1 p., undated).

Benjamin and Mary Edgell

From time to time I like to run a test to determine how many pages of information there would be in a Narrative Descendant report if I decided I wanted to share with someone.

The RootsMagic narrative descendant report, as I compile it, includes an "every name index" and a "place name index."

This morning I ran a test for the family of Benjamin and Mary Edgell. There were 1,411 pages in the report.

I'm willing to discuss an exchange of information with members of the Edgell family, but there must be a willingness to share in order to obtain the information I have compiled.
