Frances (Low) Henthorn

RELATIONSHIP: Frances Low was named for her grandmother, Frances Johnson, who was married to Daniel Johnson. She was called Fanny by her grandson, Rev. James Quinn, in his recollections.

Problem: The last name has been reported as: Low and Lowe.

RELATIONSHIP: Frances Low was the niece of Hannah Johnson who married Thomas Cresap, Sr. This is the link between the Henthorn family and the Cresap family. Thomas Cresap was a leader of the folks from Maryland who became involved in a border dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania. Thomas Cresap was imprisoned in Philadelphia for his part in the affair. It is reported by some that his wife and children lived with some of the Henthorns at Cordurus, PA while he was in prison. The various exploits of Thomas Cresap and his sons are quite well documented.

DEATH: She died soon after the birth of her daughter, Sarah in 1744.

LAND-DEATH: Some say she died about 1745. This is because on the conveyance, selling "Providence," dated 3 May 1745, the wife testifying was named: Margarett. Nothing is known of this woman, but it is assumed that John, being a widower with 4 children, would have remarried. "Providence" was located on Codorus River (Creek) in Baltimore Co., MD in what is now the area of York, PA.

Adam Henthorn

BIRTH: 1880 West Virginia census record for Daniel Henthorn, son of Adam, lists the birthplace of his mother and father as, PA PA.

QUESTION: Was the place of birth, MD, as listed by some, or PA as listed in the 1880 census record of son, Daniel?

LAND: Adam Henthorn bought land from Daniel Kyger. Daniel was the husband of Ann Henthorn, daughter of James, the second. Adam died without receiving a deed for the property. The Deed Book was burned extensively when the court house in Woodsfield, OH burned in 1868. The following extract was copied from the burned volume by, Leila Francy of Toronto, OH.

After his death there were several suits over the estate, which apparently went on for many years. The suits are described in the notes of the some of the parties to the suits.

Adam Henthorne Article

Adam Henthorne, who lived in Salem Township, was another 1812 soldier in the Company of John Howell and his name appears on the muster roll from September 3, 1813 until January 3 and March 16, 1814. He was a son of the Rev. Soldier James Henthorne, [Note: This is not correct. He was a grandson of James Henthorn and son of Adam. REH] and died in August 1830, aged 49 years, so was born about 1781. He is buried in Rutter Cemetery in Salem Township, along Sunfish Creek. His wife was Nancy and she died in September, 1847, aged 61 years, and is buried in this same cemetery.

The court records in 1848 give the heirs of Adam Henthorne as: Eli Baldwin and Anne, his wife; Jane Henthorne, a resident of Virginia; Joseph Henthorne, Elizabeth Henthorne, Andrew Henthorne, Margaret Ullom, Phebe Henthorne; Daniel Henthorne, and Mary Clark and Daniel her husband. Mary Clark and Annie Baldwin are both buried in the Rut[t]er Cemetery too -- Mary Clark, consort of Daniel, died May 14, 1851, aged 46 years, 6 months and Annie Baldwin, wife of Eli died March, 1861, 39 years, 11 months and 2 days.

Jane (Henthorn) Yoho

LEGAL_MATTER: Jane Henthorn, age 8, William A., age 10, and Daniel, age 4 were put under the guardianship of William C. Walton at the June 1832 term of court at Monroe Co., OH.


RELATIONSHIP: Jane Henthorn had an illegitimate daughter, Margaret Adaline Henthorn, before she married Jeremiah Yoho. She was the 2nd wife of Jeremiah Yoho.

NOTICE OF PARTITION: Eli Baldwin and Anne, his wife vs. Joseph Henthorn, Elizabeth Henthorne, Andrew Henthorne, Margaret Ullom, Phebe Henthorne, Mary Clark and Daniel Clark, her husband, Jane Henthorne, and Daniel Henthorne. The defendant Jane Henthorne who is a resident of the State of Virginia will take notice that the petitioner Eli Baldwin and Ann, his wife, on the 13th day of January, 1848, filed in the Court of Common Pleas of Monroe Co., Ohio their petition in which they as heirs of Adam Henthorne deceased, ask for partition of real estate therein described as land of which the said Adam Henthorne died seized. Petition for hearing will be at the June term, 1848 of said court.

Jeremiah and Jane Yoho

Jane Yoho came into an inheritance about the time she married Jeremiah Yoho. With her money and their hard work and good management they became well off. They owned much hill land and rented large acreages of Ohio River bottom land and raised corn on it. The grandfather of Denver Yoho, Charles Yoho, said his father had as many as 40 one horse cultivators plowing corn in one field and when they finished the field they started again. This was in Mason county, WV. Later he rented a large field in Gallia county, OH. They also had coal mines and a large freighting business. For several years there was a Yoho, OH postoffice on their property.

Jane outlived Jerry and the real estate went to Adaline when Jane died. I doubt if there was much money to be inherited. Adaline married John Swindler. Denver Yoho's two oldest aunts and his father thought well of the Swindlers. His grandmother named two of her daughters, Vesta and Nellie, which were the names of two of the Swindler girls also. Denver wasn't sure if they were named for the Swindler girls or whether Vesta and Nellie were popular names at the time.

NO_ISSUE: Jeremiah and Jane Yoho had no children of their union.

The Ancestral File lists, Jeremiah Yoho (P2DR-GN), b. [1824].

Delbert Henthorn reports that Virginia Lois Rosenau Esh has found that Jane Henthorn, daughter of Adam and Nancy (Hood) Henthorn, married Jeremiah Yoho, in 1857. Jane was born 14 Jul 1824 and died Aug 1903. It appears she was the 2nd wife of Jeremiah Yoho.

RESIDENCES: Jeremiah Yoho lived in Marshall Co., WV; Apple Grove, Mason Co., WV; and Monroe and Gallia counties in Ohio.

BIOGRAPHY: The Underground Recruiter

Editor's Note: This article was submitted by Denver Yoho, Gallipolis, Ohio. It first appeared in the July 23, 1983 issue of the "West Virginia Hillbilly," where it was entitled, "West Virginia in the Civil War: Underground Recruiter."

My great-grandfather was Jeremiah Yoho (1828-1890). He was the son of George Yoho and Rachel Garner of Marshall County [West Virginia]. He lived during the Civil War at Apple Grove, Mason County [WV]. The house was on the Ohio River bank on land now owned by the Goodyear Company. I have lost the only written evidence of his living there, which was a letter he had written to his sister Polly's husband, Nicholas Gatts, who lived at Silver Hill, Wetzel Co., [WV]. This letter was written just prior to the start of the war. Jeremiah made his signature with an X.

My grandfather, Charles Yoho (1856-1946), was reared by his grandparents, the George Yohos, who lived on Fairview Ridge, Marshall County, at the time. One day, grandpa and a smaller boy saw some soldiers approaching at a distance. Frightened, they ran. The soldiers shot at them as they scurried into an empty house where they hid until the soldiers surrounded the house and demanded that they come out. The commanding officer, a Captain in the Union Army, upon seeing that they were children, addressed my grandfather. "Boy, I should thrash you good. We may have have killed you. Never run from soldiers for we don't make war on children."

Albert Anderson, who lived on Proctor Creek, Wetzel County in 1936, told me that my great-grandmother, Hannah Anderson Yoho, Jeremiah's first wife, was a sister of his father, Franklin Anderson. Albert also said that one of his Anderson uncles and another man of Wetzel County went to Jeremiah Yoho in Mason County and that Jeremiah was an underground recruiter for the Confederate Cavalry. Anderson said that Jeremiah furnished the men a horse and saddle each and told them they could find the Confederate troops on the Kanawha River near Charleston. The two had to slip around Union troops before they found the Confederate Cavalry. They enlisted in time to take part in the Battle of Scary Creek, July 17, 1861. Denver Yoho wrote, "I have never learned this great, great Uncle Anderson's name or which cavalry he joined."

Jeremiah had a large family operation with as many as forty men working for him. One of the many islands in the Ohio River at that time was just above Apple Grove, and the local people used it to hide their horses from the armies. This was a successful hiding place until one of Jeremiah's dissatisfied employees joined the Union Army and led a foray on the island. A team of mares and a span of mules belonging to Jerimiah Yoho were taken on this raid. (My aunt, Vesta Yoho Rollyson, age 96, reflected recently, "Wasn't that a dirty trick of Andy Jordon, stealing grandpa's horses?") Jeremiah heard of the loss soon after it happened and followed the raiders to the Kanawha River, by way of what now is Jerry's Run, [to] where the army had camped near Pliny. He was allowed to bring one mare home because she had a suckling colt there. He turned the mare loose and she hurried home to her colt. The distance from Pliny to Apple Grove is about 15 miles. The mare trotted most of the distance, arrived home before Jeremiah, went directly to the river and drank as the colt sucked. Both animals died, the mare from drinking too much water while she was hot, and the colt from sucking the mare's hot milk.

A second raid was made on the Yoho place, led again by a former employee. George Yoho, Jeremiah's father, was lying on the porch taking a nap when they arrived. The soldiers ran a bayonet up the old man's belly, cutting off buttons, but not doing other damage. They took what they wanted and left. A few years later, when the war was over, George was driving a wagon pulled by oxen on the streets of Gallipolis, Ohio. The mud in the street was so bad that a pedestrian had trouble keeping his boots on and had very little control of his movements as he crossed the street. The man who had used the bayonet walked directly in front of George's oxen and within reach of his bullwhip. My grandfather [Charle Yoho] said, "Grandpap George whipped the clothes off him and said, 'Now goddamn you there ain't no Civil War going on'". A grandson of the whipped man lived in the same neighborhood as my grandfather in Cabell County, [WV], and my grandfather would repeat this story to me every time we saw the man.

Yoho: Baseball, Columns, Postmen

On June 2, 1882 a post office was established at Yoho, Ohio with Jeremiah Yoho serving as the first postmaster. The village of Yoho was founded by Jeremiah Yoho on land that he farmed and used in his freighting business. According to a history compiled by Denver Yoho, a great grandson; Jeremiah Yoho was born about 1828 in Ohio County, Virginia. Before coming to Gallia County, Ohio just before 1870, he had also lived in Monroe County, Ohio and Mason County, Virginia (now West Virginia). In due time Yoho had purchased over 200 acres of land near the Guyan Township townhouse.

In the Denver Yoho history he writes: "Jerry Yoho was an entrepreneur, he operated a coal mine at Yoho and transferred the coal to consumers with his own wagons. He also did other freight business as well as farming his own land and renting large acreages of river bottom from the mouth of Swan Creek to the first hill towards Crown City in corn."

During the time that there was a community called Yoho we note an occasion byline in the various newspapers of the Yoho news. In the 1890's the village had a baseball team known as the Yoho Clippers. In 1882 the Yoho column included information about the need for farmers to diversify their crops. Stated the Yoho columinist in the fall of 1882: "Three years ago the idea of cultivating the sunflower plant, for its seed, would have been pronounced as unprofitable, and there are farmers that have as much as six acres devoted to this crop. Oil manufacturers have recently discovered that the sunflower seed contains a very fine oil, and the production doesn't supply the demand for them."

Jeremiah Yoho who lived until 1890 and is buried in the Guyan Township Cemetery weighed over 300 pounds. States Denver Yoho: "He (Jeremiah) road a dun pony weighing about 800 pounds over the farm while supervising his various enterprises. This large man on so small a horse was very conspicuous. He was a big eater and was especially fond of roasting ears. It is said that in a hotel in Gallipolis he ate 12 ears of corn with a meal and when he was paying for the meal he was advised that the cost was 15 cents. He replied that he thought the cost of the meal was 25 cents. The cashier said, "It is Mr. Yoho, but we only charge 15 cents for horse feed."

Ahnentafel Chart

Ahnentafel is a German word meaning ancestor chart. The person for whom the chart is prepared has the number one (1) in front of their name. To find the father of a person, double their number. To find the mother, double their number and add one.

Therefore, the parents of (1) would be (2) and (3). The parents of (3) would be (6) and (7).

Fathers are always even numbers and mothers odd numbers.

By the way, if people repeat in the chart it is not an error. This happens when there are so many links between the various families.

James Henthorn and the Letters of Rev. Daniel Hitt

James and Sarah Henthorn named one of their sons, Daniel Hitt Henthorn. His birth is mentioned in the 19 Mar 1802 letter from James to the Rev. Daniel Hitt. Daniel Hitt was a prominent Methodist minister, who served in area of MD, VA, PA, and possibly OH. James considered Rev. Hitt, his spiritual leader, as well as personal friend. As Rev. Hitt moved from one assignment to the next many of his former parishioners maintained contact with him through letters. James was one of those who wrote several letters. Other Henthorns and their relations and neighbors also wrote. Rev. Hitt kept these letters and when he died there were more than 335 of them in his files. The letters were found by the Hitt family. They have been transcribed from hand written letters to type written copies and indexed. The collection was donated to Ohio Wesleyan University, which is located at Delaware, Delaware Co., OH. At least 37 of the letters were written by the Henthorns and their relations. Of these, 17, were written by James Henthorn, including the last letter, No. 335.

In his letters James refers to his wife as, Sally.

The letters written by James to Rev. Hitt were dated: 12 Apr 1797 (from Fayette Co.); 3 Oct 1797; 13 Apr 1798; 7 Jan 1801; 13 Sep 1801; 25 Dec 1801 (near Union); 12 Feb 1802; 19 Mar 1802; 10 Jan 1803; 16 Mar 1803; 19 Jun 1803; 23 Sep 1804; 24 Mar 1805; 8 Jan 1806; 24 Feb 1806; 14 Sep 1806; 30 Nov 1806.

Methodist minister, Rev. James Quinn, another correspondent of Rev. Hitt, was the 1st cousin of James Henthorn.

Rev. Daniel Hitt, the son of Henry Hitt, was born in 1770 or 5 Apr 1768. He died unmarried in 1825, after becoming ill at the Greencastle, PA camp meeting. He died nearby in Washington Co., MD (others say in Fauquier Co.)at the home of his nephew, Samuel Hitt.

The lawyer, Tom Scott, wrote in his "Memoirs" about the Hitt family. He says of Daniel Hitt that, "he was tall and had good body proportions. He had light eyes, dark eyebrows, black curly hair, which he combed back and spread over his shoulders. His voice was soft, clear and capable of considerable extension. His articulation and emphasis were good. His dress was plain and neat, every part adjusted with scrupulous exactness. A pleasant smile played upon his countenance and his movements were naturally easy, graceful and dignified." Prof. Bell writes, "His regular appointments were: 1790 Lancaster, VA; 1791 Allegany, MD; Rockingham, VA; 1792 Ohio, PA; 1793 Pittsburgh, PA; 1794 Redstone, PA; 1795 Clarksburg, WV; 1796 Baltimore, MD; 1797 Fairfax, VA; Alexandria, VA; 1798-1801 Redstone, Elder; 1801-1805 Alexandria, Elder; 1805-1807 Baltimore, Elder." He may have also served for a time in Fredrick, MD.

RELATIONSHIP: Daniel Hitt Henthorn and John Matson Hitt Cloud were 1st cousins, 1 generation removed. Their common ancestor was John Henthorn, Jr., the grandfather of Daniel Hitt Henthorn. The paternal grandmother of John Matson Hitt Cloud was Rachel Matson.

BIOGRAPHY:
"The Cloud Family," by Thomas Maxwell Potts (1911-1912), p. 92 says of Israel Cloud: Early in life he went to the state of Ohio and settled in the neighborhood of Urbana and Somerset [Probably Urbana, Champaign Co., and Somerset, Perry Co., OH]. He was a carpenter and builder by occupation and also a local minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, having been ordained by Bishop James in 1847. He held various offices in the counties of Franklin and Perry, such as Justice of the Peace., etc.

He first married Elizabeth Henthorn in 1816 of whom he wrote, "She early sought her maker and was happy in her God." They had ten children, of whom four grew to maturity and two married. In 1893 all were deceased.

Some time after the death of his first wife he married (1846) Mary Lakin, a granddaughter of Rev. Thomas Lake one of the pioneers of Methodism. In 1893 she was still living, still active and in good health physically and mentally, then at the age of 80 years. She wrote of Isreal Cloud, "He was one of the best and most upright of men that ever lived." He was quiet in his ways, gentle almost to the appearance of timidity in his manner. His brother used to say, "He was afraid to eat cherries for fear the stones would choke him." He was firm in priciple and made religion the great business of life.

REFERENCE: The Cloud Family Association is a non-profit organization devoted to the collection and preservation of inforamtion about the various branches of the Cloud Family, past and present. The files of the Association are organized to provide a clearing house for Cloud information and a major goal is to encourage people to share their family information with the Association and with others interested in the family. The CLOUD FAMILY JOURNAL (ISSN 0883-0940), generally published quarterly, is designed to make this information, along with data from family sources and public documents, available to interested persons. The first gathering of The Cloud Family Association was held in 1978 in Austin, TX. They hold an annual meeting on the last weekend in July, somewhere in the South.
