Pearl Alice Kemmerer Ice (1891 - 1914) - Find A Grave Memorial

Pearl Alice Kemmerer Ice (1891 - 1914) - Find A Grave Memorial

Working on adding information about this person to my Yoho genealogy file today.  She was the spouse of Absalom Warren "Bay" Ice.  I had him in my file as: Warren Absalom "Bay" Ice.  The tombstone shows; A.W. Ice.

Her information is on FindAGrave.  I noticed that I can post to Google Blogger with a click of a button while on FindAGrave.  I'm testing to see how this works.

FindAGrave FAQ

I'm trying to learn more about how to use FindAGrave,

I'm searching for a User's Guide or a good tutorial.

Here's a link to the FindAGrave FAQ.

FindAGrave

Today I decided to create a FindAGrave account.

I noticed some errors. For example: one record showed the birth and death month of an infant as, 17 Aug of some year.  When I looked at the photograph of the tombstone the day and month was clearly, 7 Aug.  In another case, the middle name of the father was, Evert and the middle name of a son was Everet. I want to be able to quickly communicate with the person who posted when I notice a problem.

I'm working on extracting some information about the West Virginia families of: Hostutler and Wildman.  There are links to Richmond, Yoho and Lemley.

Congers of Peninsula, Summit Co., OH

I worked on a FindAGrave project to extract information about members of the Conger family of Peninsula, Summit Co., OH who are buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery at that place.

I was surprised when information on one of the tombstone photos lead me to additional information about Dr. George Corlett Radcliffe and his wife, Alice C. Huston.  William C. Huston, also a doctor, was the father of Alice.  He was married to Fannie Stillman Conger.

Unknown Burial Dates

Often you can find and record the date and place of death.  It's not so easy to determine the date of burial.  The name and place of the cemetery is also often available and should be entered in the burial field. Missing, in many cases, is the date of burial. It's possible to extrapolate the month and year of burial from the death information.

This situation creates a problem with RootsMagic.  When I record only the month and year of burial the program doesn't handle the burial date in chronological order in the detailed reports.  That is to say, the burial information is inserted into the "text" of the report before the death information.

There is a solution to the problem.  It's somewhat tedious to deal with this issue. RootsMagic has a "Sort date" field.  To force the burial date to appear after the death date I need to enter a full date in the "Sort date" field. For example, if a person died on 15 Dec 1969 I would enter this date in the death date field.  In the burial date field I would enter, Dec 1969. In the "sort date" field for burial date I would enter, 30 Dec 1969, thus forcing the burial date to sort after the death date.

Did I write about this before?  If I did, I suppose it indicates that my memory isn't very good and that this little problem drives me nuts.

Conger Research Challenge

On page 39a of The Conger Family of America, Vol. 1, Maxine Leonard states:

CHARLES CURTIS CONGER 1851 married Abbie Grant, niece of Ulysses S. Grant.

There is no source citation. As of September 2014 I wasn't able to find any information on the Internet that would support this relationship.

Here's what I know:

  1. Charles Curtis Conger was born on 23 Jan 1851 in Oneida, Knox Co., IL.
  2. Abigail "Abby or Abbie" Adelia Grant was born on 21 Apr 1853.
  3. The couple had two children: Norma Grant Conger and Clara Hurd Conger.
  4. Ulysses S. Grant was a Civil War General and later President of the United States.
  5. U.S. Grant had two brothers: Samuel Simpson Grant and Orville Lynch Grant.  It appears that Samuel might not have married.  Orville married but I didn't see any children listed.

Here's my Conger Research Challenge.

  1. Link Abigail Adelia Grant to one of the brothers of U.S. Grant.
  2. Provide the name of Abigail's mother.
  3. Cite sources to prove the link.
Can you help me solve this challenge?

State Names

When I started doing genealogy I decided to use the two-character Postal Service codes for the state names.  Later, I read posts and articles that recommended writing out the state names in full. My latest genealogy program, RootsMagic seems to support this view.  I noticed this when I used the Name Gazetteer.

At this point I'm unwilling to change.  I've made one concession. When the only place name I have for an event is a state name I write out the state name in full.

AKA: or NAME-CONFLICT:

I'm working on a project to extract Nicknames from the Note fields in my Conger genealogy file. The goal is to add the Nicknames to the Nickname field that is defined by RootsMagic.  It's a slow process. When I was using Personal Ancestral File (PAF) I used the "data tag" AKA: in the Note field when I wanted to record a Nickname.  Using the search command of RootsMagic it's easy to find the Notes with the AKA: data tag.

I've discovered that I often used the AKA: data tag for information that was really pointing out a name conflict rather than an "also known as" name.

Much of the information in my Conger file came from the impressive two-volume work of Maxine -(Crowell) Leonard, The Conger Family of America.  I have probably written that, "Mrs. Leonard was consistently inconsistent in how she spelled people's names."  There is no guarantee that a name found in Volume Two is more accurate than the name found in Volume One.  I say this because sometimes she used two different spellings in Volume Two. Other researchers such as, Charles G.B. Conger, recorded spelling different from Mrs. Leonard.

As part of the project to extract the Nicknames I decided I would change the AKA: data tag in the Notes to use two other data tags, in combination, that I used in my PAF file, NAME-CONFLICT: when I'm recording that I noticed a "name" conflict between what various researchers reported, rather than a Nickname.

Researcher Fact

I added a new Fact, that I created, to the Conger genealogy file.  The name of the fact is Researcher and it is abbreviated in my file as, Reschr.

When my genealogy program was PAF I entered the data tag, RESEARCHER: in the Note of anyone who was either a researcher or had a relationship with someone who was a researcher.

I used the RootsMagic search to find all of the RESEARCHER: tags in the Conger file and added the new Fact to the appropriate records.

Now anytime I am viewing the edit screen for a person with this Fact the abbreviation displays. When I print a descendant report RootsMagic prints out this phrase, which I created, when I added the new Fact.

"The record of John Doe lists genealogy researcher information."

I can also search on this Fact to find all of the researchers or create a Researcher List of all the researchers in the file (The Researcher List for the Conger file is five pages with one person listed per line of the report).
