Search Engine

Search Engine

A friend asked me if I know how to install a Search box on a website. When I had my website on AOL I installed the code to search the components of the website. I've forgotten how I did it. I think I used a free routine I got from Microsoft. I decided to do a Google search to see what I could find about free search engine options.

I discovered that Google has a Search gadget that can quickly and easily be installed on the Google blogs. I believe this feature can also be installed on websites

I tested the gadget on one of my four blogs and it worked "like a charm." I decided to install the search box at the top of the sidebar on all four of my Google blogs.

Enter your search terms in the search box and click to search. The results of your search will appear in the display window on the left side of the screen. Notice at the top of the window there is a line with three search options and an "X" in a little box:. The options are:

  • This Blog
  • Linked From Here
  • Links to Other Blogs and Points of Interest
  • "X" - (to close the search results window)

Try all three to see how they work. With each "hit" the URL for the blog where the cited item was found is displayed.

I hope the "Search" feature will help you move around in the blogs and make it easy to find anything you want to look at a second time.

Switzerland of the Ohio

Hannibal, Ohio. June 1925.

Dear kinsfolk of Father Jacob Tisher, Pioneer Methodist from Switzerland, to this "Switzerland" of Ohio, U. S. A.

In April of 1819, under the leadership of Jacob Tisher, ten German-Swiss families floated with the Aar and the Rhine to Antwerpt, there took passage on the French vessel "Eugenius" for U. S. A. After a voyage of forty-eight days they landed at Amboy, N. J., where six families purchased teams and proceeded to Wheeling, W. Va. [sic, Virginia]. This band, Jacob Tisher, Jacob Tschappet, Daniel Fankhouser, Nicholas Fankhouser, Jacob Marti and their families and Jacob Nispeli, single, left Wheeling September 15th, 1819, their destination being the Great Kanawha. Landing their flatboat at Captina, they were persuaded to take up Government land in Monroe County. Thus started the "Switzerland" of Ohio.

Jacob Tisher builded his cabin on the hill at Hannibal, there he reared his family of thirteen children, administered help, encouragement and sympathy to all he met, organized societies, and preached the Gospel to the settlers in a circuit of 200 miles, which he traveled on boat. [sic, on foot].

This man and his wife of whom you are descendants, rests in the Emma Grove cemetery at Hannibal, O., the marker of their graves having crumbled to dust. It is the earnest desire of members of this family tree to place a substantial marker to their graves. Will you contribute? As a suggestion, $2.00 to $10.00 is mentioned. A prompt remittance will be appreciated.

Yours truly
Mrs. Robt. C. Tisher

[Note: On 24 January 1979, Jane Morrison of Sylmar, CA wrote to Mrs. Catharine Fedorchak about her interest in the genealogy and history of the Tisher family of Monroe County, Ohio. With her letter to Mrs. Fedorchak she inclosed the above letter from Mrs. Robert C. Tisher of Hannibal, OH. Jane Morrison states that the letter was received in 1925 by her mother who's maiden name was, Myrtle G. Tisher. Mytrle Tisher's paternal grandfather was, Christian Tisher (1819-1869). He was raised and married, Mary Ellen Rhodes, in Monroe county. Early family papers indicated that he was born in New York in 1819. He moved to Iowa and died in Omaha, NE.

Both letters are printed on pages 93-94 of "Family Research in Monroe County, Ohio," Volume III, by Catharine Foreaker Fedorchak. Note written by Richard E. Henthorn, 25 Feb 2010.]

Conger, Peter DeSigney

Peter DeSigney Conger

PROBLEM: Ancestral File of Jan 1996 lists a second wife for Peter DeSigney Conger. Her name is listed as, Nancy, born Abt. 1771, perhaps in Ont. Married in Ont. They had a daughter: Jane Stinson Conger, born 13 Feb 1793 at Fredericksburg, Lennox/Addington, Ont. Can this be proven? What evidence is there that Peter DeSigney Conger ever lived in Ontario, Canada?

In CFA I, p. 425 there is a second Peter DeSigney Conger listed, born 16 Jan 1770 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ. He was the the nephew of Peter DeSignery Conger, b. 1737. The parents of the younger, Peter, were David Conger and Rachel Willson. The younger Peter married, Elizabeth Seymour and they had a child, Jane Stinson Conger, b. Abt. 1792, who married Moses White on 20 Mar 1810.

BIOGRAPHY: Tradition is that Peter DeSigney Conger, like his brother David, was also a Tory and that he was killed near his home during a battle which raged near the place. It is said that he left his house one evening and never returned. His son, David, later removed to Indiana, where he died after raising a large family.

Records of the Presbyterian Church, New Providence, NJ state, "Polly Crane Conger, daughter of DeSigney, baptized Jan. 19, 1785 'on his wife's account'." The entry is also made that Polly Crane Conger, an infant child of DeSigney Conger died Jan. 19, 1785.

The records further state that DeSigney Conger died Dec. 7, 1785. There were probably other children.

BIOGRAPHY:
Richard K. Walton was born on the farm now known as the Maury Farm, on Sunfish creek, in Salem township, Monroe county, Ohio, (owned then by his father, Jeremiah Walton), on the 2d day of September, A.D. 1836; and at the age of seven years, his father left his residence on the farm and moved his family to the town of Clarington, on the Ohio river, where he engaged in the practice of medicine for six years, during which time Richard was sent to school regularly to such teachers as were then to be employed under the earlier school regime.

At the age of thirteen, Richard was removed by his father back to the farm on which he was born; and from that time he labored on the farm, under the direction of his father, who for many years afterwards continued in his practice, as a successful physician. Richard, however, was sent to school only during the winter terms, which were short, lasting each winter about four months. In this way he, by close application, became well versed in the common branches of English learning, and at the age of nineteen procured a certificate to teach in the common schools.

His first advent into the school room, armed with his first certificate, was in the fall of 1855; wages, thirty dollars a month; length of term, six months. With the proceeds of his first winter's labor in the school room, he, by the consent of his father, attended a school at Woodsfield, Ohio, taught by William Wheeler, the next summer and fall. The former years labor in the same schoolroom was repeated the following year, and he again attended two terms of school at Woodsfield, taught by Professor John Moore, who was an instructor of great ability and learning; after which, on the 15th day of June, A.D. 1858, he was married to Julia A. Conger, the youngest daughter of Elias and Margaret (Atkinson) Conger, of Monroe county, Ohio; taught school for one year following his marriage at Cameron, in Adams township, and afterwards in various districts of Adams and other townships of the county, when in 1861 he was appointed school examiner by Probate Judge Sinclair.

In the fall of 1862 he was chosen by the board of education of the Clarington special school district principal of the Clarington school; resigned the office of school examiner in the spring of 1863, and thereafter removed, at the close of one term of school at Clarington, to his father's farm in Adams township, where he spent the most of his time for two years following, reading law under the instruction of the Hon. William F. Hunter, of Monroe county, Ohio; after which he was again called by the board of education to labor as principal in the Clarington school, at which place he was employed as principal of the school, with the exception of one term, for ten years.

From the time of his marriage, and during all this period, six children were born in his family, four of which, two sons and two daughters, to wit: William V., Ione, Emma V., and James C., are now living.

After having been engaged in the profession of teaching, and meeting with success in this calling for more than twenty years, and being solicitous for a change from the schoolroom, he became a candidate for the office of probate judge, to which he was elected in the fall of 1878, and afterward, in the fall of 1881, was reelected to a second term of said office, of which he is now the incumbent.
