Brierly (Brierley) Family

Here's a HotLink to Brierly (Brierley) Family website. There's a connection to my Henthorn family from England. The Brierly family emigrated from the area of Lancashire, England to Worcester county, Massachusetts in the mid-1840s.

I just learned about this website in the last few days. Prior to finding the website I didn't know that members of this family came to the United States.

Broken Links

Photo: Mr. Dickie (Longwood Gardens, PA)

On the homepage of my website, near the bottom, there's a button labeled "Links". This button takes visitors to a page with buttons to webpages created and maintained by others. Yesterday I did one of my periodic, and very infrequent, checks to see if these links are working. To my dismay, after only a few minutes, I found seven that weren't working. Then I got bored with the process and didn't check all of the links. Instead I went off to do something else.

Using Google I was able to find new URLs for two of the seven that didn't work.

The whole process is tedious and time consuming. Because this often happens when links to the webpages of others are shared one has to be welling to put in the time to do the necessary periodic maintenance.

I've never had any luck getting any help with the task. By this I mean that I don't ever remember any visitor to my website sending me an Email to let me know they found a bad link. I'd appreciate any help I can get with website maintenance issues and also with website proof reading.

Also, if you find a particularly useful website pertaining to one of the surnames that are featured on my webpages I'll consider adding a link to that information if you send the URL in an Email.

The purpose of this message is to let visitors know that I am aware of the problem with the Links page and that I intend to work on the project to insure that all of the links work. I make no promise as to when I'll have the work completed.

Thank you for your patience.

Cornelius Atkinson - Frontier Ranger

In June of 1950 a four page article (pages 123-127) titled, Cornelius Atkinson - Frontier Ranger was published in The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine (Vol. XIII, 5) by Atkinson descendant, William C. Hudson. The article consisted of two pages of textual information and three pages of genealogy descendant chart. There were five numbered citations in the article. Unfortunately the citations themselves were lost. In January 1996 researcher Professor Raymond Bell shared this article with me. Recently, in July 2008, I reviewed the article and decided I'd like to share it on the Internet.

To make a document that I could share I rekeyed all five pages. I entered the information into my genealogy program, RootsMagic. The textual information, which was on the first two-plus pages of the original article, was included in the notes of the appropriate individuals. I also wrote several paragraphs in the note fields when I wanted to comment on something in the orginial piece. I did resist the temptation to add additional information. My goal wasn't to create an updated Atkinson genealogy. Rather, I wanted to share the information from the original article in a format which uses more pages and which lends itself to publication on my website.

I selected a numbering system (D'Aboville (indented)) similar to the one used by Mr. Hudson in his article.

I hope readers will be pleased with the result. Anyone working on the Atkinson family of Monroe County, Ohio owes William C. Hudson a debt of gratitude.

As of Sep 2009 you will have to ask me about this document. It isn't available on the Internet.

GEDCOM

Photo: Mr. Dickie - Melva's Iris

Today's HotLink topic is GEDCOMs. GEDCOMs are genealogy files that allow us to exchange genealogy information between genealogy programs. Some programs can read a GEDCOM file and create webpages. One program, Ancestral Author, can convert a GEDCOM file to a very nice PDF file with the names linked.

If you want to learn more about GEDCOM perhaps you'll find something helpful at one of these websites.

PDF Files for Genealogy

In the last few years PDF formatted files have been assuming a more significant role in online genealogy publishing.

The RootsMagic genealogy program can output PDF files. The Ancestral Quest program can produce very nice "linked" PDF reports from GEDCOM files. Other reports from genealogy programs can be converted to PDF using free or shareware programs.

The use of PDF insures that the recipient of the file can read and print the report with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on their own computer.

There's a PDF page link on the homepage of my genealogy website. From the PDF page you can access several reports that I have made available to anyone who visits.

Search Engines

Google isn't the only search engine on the Internet. You might want to try some of the others. The results are quite different. Some search other search engines. Try using the same search words with several different search engines to see what I'm talking about.

Here's an article about search engines followed by HotLinks to some of them that I have tried.

If you find any good genealogy sites about any of our common interests send me an Email with a short description of what you found. I can post the information to the Website News.

State and County Websites of Interest

Photo: Internet

Today I'm posting links to County and State genealogy websites of interest. The source of these links is my AOL Favorites where I stored the URLs of websites I visited during the last couple of years. I tested all links to make sure they work as of today, 2 Jul 2008.

The first link is the the USGenWeb Project. This is a good place to start your search if you are looking for the various county websites.

There is no particular order to the list. I did group the links together by county.

If you have other links that you'd like to share send me an Email and I can post the link to this blog.

After visiting a website remember to use your browser "back" button to return to this page.
